Disappointing and meaningless follow-up
27 January 2024
I loved the original movie, which can be regarded as a masterpiece. It was full of warmth and wit, and with engaging, talented actors. This follow-up, made 25 years later, unfortunately lacks everything that the original movie could offer. The actors seem tired and bored. If you loved the original movie, you will hate this one, it's really that bad. So, don't waste your time on this. It seems that it was made purely to milk some money. Once upon a time, Lukas Moodysson made exciting movies and Tillsammans (2000) was the best one in my opinion. But this one I think most people would prefer to forget.

Speak No Evil (2022)

Excellent contemporary horror subject
17 September 2022
This is a film about a modern family, affected by some confidence issues, easily being influenced and very keen on being friendly and patient with everyone even if clear warning bells start to sound early. They are trapped early without realizing it until it is too late. And, as in most other horror movies, judgment fails and the consequences are severe. It may go a bit too far, but is still is an important ingredient which this film builds upon.

I'm much impressed by the director, Christian Tafdrup, being in the same league as some other recent successful directors in the modern horror genre, such as Ari Aster and Rose Glass. The contradiction between ordinary people, used to living a civilized life in a contemporary society, and on the other hand the enigmatic, primitive and almost otherwordly psychopaths, often leaders of sects or other strange movements, is both fascinating and scary. This has been skillfully built up in this film.

Classic Swedish cult movie
1 April 2022
It is difficult not to set a 10/10 rating since this is probably, among Swedes, the most popular Swedish movie ever. Lines from this movie are nowadays referred to in the Swedish language and culture.

If you are not Swedish, you may find the movie a bit difficult to fully appreciate. My advice is to watch it more than once, and you will discover the brilliant timing in dialogues and the amazing chemistry between the actors. There are, however, some hilarious scenes that you may not comprehend without an understanding of Swedish culture and behaviour.

What makes this movie so special is the funny clash in culture and traditions between the cheerful Swedish tourists and the domestic Spanish population. The relation to alcohol was repeatedly made fun of, considering that Sweden was, and still is, restrictive when it comes to alcohol consumption.
