The Ward (2010)
7/10
directing from another era
16 June 2011
For the people who didn't enjoy this I can understand this somewhat, it does have some weak aspects but overall I enjoyed the film. It has a kind of classic, low budget sense about it. I liked the premise of this film, an amnesiac in a psychiatric institution is being terrorized by a ghost that is stalking and killing the other patients, it is definitely watchable from the start to end. But on a whole this film is well directed by Carpenter. Someone else mentioned the soundtrack which plays in the opening credits, it has a haunting child-like voice. it did have another song also Run Baby Run - The Newbeats. I have seen all of Carpenters films and this was pretty good, it has a more dignified sense about it than some of his others.

AKA ... Deadly Sweet

This film is very stylized, liked a lot of the editing effects, the split images in-particular, also how it cuts to war images of Vietnam and changes to black and white in parts. The sets, costumes/wardrobe are elaborate and detailed, the lighting is very good also. Interesting to see London in the 60's, notice how the trains are still powered by steam in the scene behind the graveyard. The casting is quite strong especially Jean-Louis Trintignant who plays the lead role, he is supported by the beautiful Ewa Aulin, the cast of nefarious mob type figures is also a standout. The storyline although a little weak leaves you guessing until the end. It is quite enjoyable overall, but seems a little experimental and doesn't really mesh, but I liked the fact it had a sad ending.

Dear Mr. Gacy (2010)
8/10
I recommend this film
6 February 2011
A film based on the book 'the last victim' co-authored by Jason Moss who had an obsession with and was the pen pal of the killer clown John Gacy.

It is a slow, well timed, minimalist, almost art house type film, think it is also directed quite well. It captures the emotional conflicts and feelings of both characters well I thought. Both leads are competent professional character actors. It is quite an interesting subject matter, the film delves into what it would be like for a teenager to correspond with a disturbed sociopath who is incarcerated and finally visit them. It is quite a tragic story that deserved to be told, Sadly Jason took his own life on June 6, 2006, the film states at the end. Anyway I recommend this film
