Automatic (2005)
hearkens back to indie film making of the 90's
there's no such thing as a low budget film anymore, so to see an actual independent film (without big names or fancy special effects) that doesn't look like it was shot on a camcorder in someone's basement is pretty refreshing. the acting is, at times, uncomfortably intimate (in a good way) and at times somewhat forced, but either way, you get the idea that you're watching actors who know what they're doing and who've actually thought their way through the process. most notably, travis schuldt, jay thames, and brandi howard. there was a sense of ease with them, that makes one feel as if they were totally unaware of the camera, which doesn't always happen when dealing with guerrilla style film making. watching this film made me long for the days of 'sex, lies, and videotape' and all the eric stoltz films of the 90's -- back when there was still such a thing as an art house film.
Xanadu (1980)
so misunderstood
this is truly one of my favorite movies (and i'm a moviephile)! i fell in love with it when i was 5 years old and have continued to love it ever since. what i don't understand is how 'the rocky horror picture show" is considered fun, culty, camp but 'xanadu' is just an embarrassing excuse for entertainment. the fact that it's bad, is what makes it so good! it's got dance, it's got song and i'ts got gene kelly for heaven sake! what's better than gene kelly? sometimes you just need some form of escape, something silly and fluffy to take your mind off of all the pressures that life presents, and this, is the perfect movie for doing just that. the dated aspect of the film only makes it even more entertaining. and if you're really into it, at the very end, during the credits, when the two actors are talking in silhouette, it's really fun (after a couple of glasses of wine) to try and read their lips to see what they're saying to each other, as there is a debate amongst some of my friends, as to what the actual outcome of the movie is.
