The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2023)
If you've read the book, you'll feel this is a change
I read the book a couple of years ago and was quite looking forward to seeing the film but knew they'd cut bits out.
I was glad that the hippy mob featured for far shorter than in the book and it kind of pares everything down to be far more linear.
However, some things got lost and some things were crammed in without getting their full dues. This resulted in less humour and more sentimentality.
Both of the lead actors were great and the cinematography was outstanding but I can't help feeling that the tone of the book was lost by some of the editing choices.
An emotional examination of guilt and life choices that is a bit of a tear jerker but could have retained the balance of its source material.
The Pink Panther (2006)
Dreadfully unfunny
Yes, I have seen all the old Peter Sellars films and enjoyed them BUT I also really like Steve Martin. There must be a reason why I didn't watch it for 15 years and that reason is that it is painfully unfunny.
There must be a reason why I did watch it 15 years after release. I didn't know that Beyonce was in it and she's the only reason to watch this excruciatingly dire movie.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Very thought provoking
I found this film better than Oldboy and better than Parasite. They're both great movies but this one is really thought-provoking.
It's not for the faint-hearted but the main theme is how far we can take revenge before it turns us into the same kind of monster we were seeking to catch.
A Hollywood remake is in the pipeline and I bet they'll miss that point completely.
The Flight Attendant (2020)
Refreshingly good
The main character is a woman. Her main supporter is a woman. The top cop is a woman. The main baddie is a woman.
In this excellent series, there's no 'feminist agenda' but, on reflection, this is the exception that proves the rule that too many TV series have predominantly male casts or women in positions where they are subordinate.
It is really enjoyable and a refreshing change.
