The Boys (2019)
Nearly perfect in every way
This show is brilliant. Acting incredible and theme top notch. It is gleefully without constraints and a commentary on n our society that hits pretty close to home. The characters are likeable and relatable. It is funny but serious and over the top. I just finished season three and can't wait for number four. The story arc is pretty solid...some gaps and liberties taken from time time but just fits with the overall theme anyway. If you are easily offended probably best to avoid although if you are adult minded it shouldn't bother you. I don't often review things but this show deserves the support and accolades given how much garbage is out there.
Wayne (2019)
Brilliant
I'd put off watching this for some time now and finally got around to it. I just loved it. Original and off the wall. Endearing characters (for the most part) and lots of smiles. Highly recommend.
The principal guy I knew from a comedy and now he's in snow piercer. Love him in this role. The ref headed cop is also solid. I am not really sure about the other actors but the main two characters were excellent and fun.
I feel like being forced to write a 600 word review is a bit excessive and probably won't bother in the future but really wanted to make sure people watched this gem of a show. Hope it worked and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Cruel Summer (2021)
Good performances
Good acting by the young ladies especially the girl who played Jeanette. Kevin Smith's daughter was pretty good also. Fairly predictable storyline but we'll executed. Every parent's nightmare.
I liked the way they handled the timeline as well. Good cinema techniques employed for age, mood and tone... really excellent actually.
I'll be following the career of the Jeanette actress for sure. Really managed to convey a wide array of emotion.
Also the Texas houseife scene is pretty spot on speaking as someone who lived there for a good 8 years. I'm glad to see the tackle some good issues in this show also.
Moonshine (2021)
Canadiana ruined by Canadiana
Why does pretty much all Canadian TV/movies suck? Because they feel the need to make whatever Canadian locality the story instead of the story. Yes this is a story about the locale but ruined by the over the top obvious efforts to slip in Canadiana when it's not needed. Plus the usual low quality production values and acting that seems endemic in the Canadian film industry. Pretty sure we could do better.
The Nevers (2021)
Decent start
Wasn't sure to start but got better across the first episode. Casting is pretty decent as well. Also I like the grit...has potential so guess we will see how it develops. Worth a watch if you like this type of subject matter.
See (2019)
Stretching the limits
I wanted to like it but just too many leaps of faith required. Really poorly thought out premise. I get where the positive reviewers are coming from but I just can't suspend my belief enough to get past the absurdity they want you to invest in.
Legion (2017)
Best. Show. Ever.
Simply profound. Great soundtrack. I've only watched season one so far but truly blown away.
Manifest (2018)
failure of a good idea
I liked the idea but it really managed to drop the ball. Basically a soap opera with barely likeable characters. The cancer boy's parents are awful...the mother especially. Just a very mediocre show bordering on really bad. I made it like 8 episodes thinking it might get better but sadly just worse and worse. Too bad because the premise was good and they could really have run with the conspiracy/sci fi aspect of it. delete.
Designated Survivor (2016)
sad
Had to take the time to write this review. I had high hopes, and perhaps still do...the premise and Sutherland and Kal Penn give the show potential but after 2 episodes all I see is Americana sappy over the top sentimentality. I hope it gets better and will give it time yet but so far I had to keep from gagging. An exercise in political correctness so far. Oh the poor Muslims, ooh the racial profiling, ooh the poor heroes (has anyone paid attention to how ineffective and corrupt congress is recently). The stereotypical war monging general etc...I think Kal Penn has the best character so far. Sutherland has potential because he is Keifer but I wish the writers could have been more intelligent about how the addressed the issues they want to explore...which are all important issues of course but one would think they could have been "smarter" about how they did it rather than belch out another America shall overcome cliché. So watch at your own peril. I may choose to change my rating after a few more episodes but for the moment I gave it a 5 rating because they could have done much better with the cast and subject matter instead of pandering to American narcissism.
Quantico (2015)
tried but...
SO I really tried to like this show. Really tried. Stuck it out for most of the season before I couldn't justify my time being wasted.
It really is a soap in sheep's clothing. Some of the characters had potential and actors/actresses as well but the show was so unbelievable and boring it quickly became painful to watch.
When I started to notice the background actors more than the main characters I realized it was over. There was no depth and the film making amateurish (you shouldn't notice the background people-or even better do something with them or don't have them at all).
The writing also was quite poor. I really wanted it to be good-i am all for a fun, shallow entertaining show but it didn't live up to that level-so many of the shows on TV now a days that are classified as shallow entertainment have more depth than this one, or at least some redeeming factor to draw upon. Sorry Quantico, but you lost me 3/4 of the way through Season 1.
Z Nation (2014)
worth the watch
I don't usually write too many reviews but wanted to do so for this show to do my part to ensure it doesn't get canceled and that an audience increase is possible. It is a delightful romp through a world of zombies, mayhem and comedy. Not The Walking Dead (as many others have pointed out) so don't even bother trying to compare. Silly, good acting and I guess I just identify with it. The premise is good, the action over the top and little bright jewels strewn throughout. I hope we get to see more "guest stars". I really enjoyed seeing the Mexican dude from Sons of Anarchy...I always thought he had potential for a bigger role. Bring on the Zombie Apocalypse! (At least for a few more seasons!!)
Black Sails (2014)
great show
Started off slow and first season took a bit of effort to get through but by the end was worth it. Second season just gets better and better. Simply a great show and worth every minute of your time investment IMHO. I also like the efforts put into tying the story to actual history. I understand it is billed as a "prequel" to Treasure Island so if that is the case it will be interesting to see if it goes the length. The actors are mainly unknowns (to me at least) but they do well. Lots of nudity which may offend some but lets just say that what there is, is well done and enjoyable. Costumes and settings are also well chosen and lend an aire of authenticity.
The Shannara Chronicles (2016)
mtv adaptation of a great book series
What to say. Just watched the first 2 episodes. I grew up on the Shannara books and actually read The Elfstones before The Sword so it is ironic this would be the first adaptation, skipping The Sword all together. I was almost going to name my baby girl Amberle in fact.
So my thoughts are I am going to watch a few more episodes before drawing a final conclusion. Right off the bat you can see the lame- o MTV young adult schtick all over the place. Some of the casting is awful but they nailed the Allanon profile and the actor is mostly suitable-I think he will do just fine. Amberle is good enough but Will is some annoying.
I think they do a pretty good job with the setting-a little too "post our world" for my liking-in the books I felt it was always eluded to and in some cases was addressed directly but the main part of the world there was no major indications and in the TV show it is all too apparent but that is just my opinion...obviously in the later books Terry ties it all together but in the original 3 Shannara books the "old world" was subtle.
Anyway bottom line I found myself gagging at the MTV factor but am still up for a few more episodes before writing it off. I do hope someone decides to make a proper version of this fantastic world and mythology...it was never as "adult" as GOT but not childish like they are hitting here a bit too much.
