Dune (2021)
Felt like a miniseries, not a movie
It is a story that unfolds in almost 3 hours without reaching somewhere, or to a conclusion, or a cliffhanger. So to me, it is like I binge watched the first 4 episodes of the first season, and now I have to wait one year for the other 4. I feel like cheated for going to the cinema for that. Other than that the visuals are great. Pacing could have been a little faster, also something that adds to the whole " it's a miniseries, not a movie!"
The Outsider: Must/Can't (2020)
Terrible writing, just terrible!
Writing couldn't be worse for thr finale of such q great series
Up until the 9th episode the suspense, the atmosphere, the characters, all made sense.
Last episode and everything went off rails.
Some key points out of hundred things wrong eith the finale that I can think off:
1. Jack had to be bitten by a snake, and then step down only to shoot himself in front of anyone, like if he couldn't do it on tje cliff (didn't he unsuccessfully try to kill himself before?). The shoortong scene was bad by the way. Suspenseful but bad.
2. Villain who lived for probably hundreds of years did not give a fight. Went down with a simple bullet
3. Post credit scene. Holly got a scratch. So f*c**n what? The beast is dead. Scratch is for shapeshifting.
Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Waste of time
Complete waste of time. It is the second time I watch it, gave it a second chance in case I kissed something important. A boy runs off home and lands to a place where some depressed gulible monsters live. Nothing really happens. We are supposed to understand that the boys character changes through his interactions with the monsters, but the script is plain dull. In the end, we hope for some explanation or any type of connection to the real world but gives us nothing. Complete waste of time. Avoid
Living with Yourself (2019)
Nothing adds up
Literally nothing makes sense in this plot. And I do not mean the fiction setup, but the characters, their reactions, their emotions. It is poorly written. On the other hand Paul Rudd was veey good in this double role and the series has a nice flow, you can watch all episodes at once.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Zero plot, makes zero sense
PROS: Nice action for most part, although having John Wick killing everybody for 2 hours leads to some repetitive death/fight patterns and yawns. Very good photography and some cool visuals.
CONS: No script whatsoever, almost no dialogue (and when there is some it seems like a 7 year old Stallone wrote it, plus almost all lines are delivered badly by the cast). Makes zero sense (they had so many chances to kill off john wick but left him alive only so that wick could kill them instead) . Has no plot! Just fights and fights. Should end sooner, can't make a two hour movie with kicks and shoots only. I regretted buying a ticket for this.
The Revenant (2015)
Beautiful filmography and direction but not flawless
Glass (Leonardo Di Caprio) is a scout working for a company that collects and sells fur pelts. His task is to protect his group and guide them safe. Things go bad once they are attacked by Indians that want to steal their pelts. 33 out of 45 die and the rest, along with Glass and his Indian son Hawk are left trying to get back to the fort safely. Fitzerald (Tom Hardy) is not keen of Glass as we understand from the very first moments, and he is actually the villain in this story. Not long after the attack Glass left the group to scout the territory and is viciously attacked by a grizzly bear. He's found almost dead and after given some basic medical care he is carried by his peers, on their way to the fort. The Indians that attacked them are still searching for them, and they are on foot, and after seeing it is almost impossible to keep going with having to carry Glass all the way, they assign a smaller group of 3 persons to assist him. His son Hawk, a young kid and also Fitzerald that actually volunteered (for a fee) to safely bring Glass home. Of course bringing him back was never his real intention so at the first opportunity he tried to take the life of Glass through suffocation and kills his son Hawk for trying to stop him. Then lied to the other kid that was accompanying them that Indians were coming and left on a hurry leaving Glass to die. But Glass is not dead yet and this is where the movie actually starts, with Glass trying to save himself, return to the fort and of course get revenge from Fitzerald.
The photography of the film is amazing, the direction of course too. The acting is perfect from both our leads (Di Caprio and Hardy) and we already know that Di Caprio is a candidate for the Oscar. As much as I'd like him to get it (cause he deserved one so far) and as much as I liked his performance, I'm not convinced for an Oscar. Definitely a candidate though. Hardy on the other hand could easily get one for a supporting role too.
My score is 7/10 for the movie cause, as much I liked it, I found it too long and had many inconsistencies in the script that I could not overlook.
First of all this guy should be dead. But even if he isn't, he should be crippled. We see him crawling for most of the second act, after he was left for dead. My thought was that how is he going to pull this off while crawling the rest of the movie? Well, to my surprise, he started to stand and then walk just a few scenes later! Although we do not have a time reference, it is obvious we are only a few days apart from the day he could not walk or catch a breath or move his hands. It would make much more sense if he would be able to stand and later walk AFTER he crawled all his way to the Indian friend he made, that fed him, carried him on a horse and fixed his wounds with affection.
I also do not understand why he was eating raw meat (and vomiting with disgust) when fires were lit all around him. It would take a moment only to get some cooked meat. Also, why would they act like crazy when they found water, when they had fire anytime they wanted and unlimited snow all around? Why wouldn't they store some meat from the huge animal they were eating (it is freezing cold so it would stay in edible condition for months) and had to eat roots only one scene later? Those things and a few more led to a 7/10 score. But if you can overlook those and let Mr Inaritu carry you away with his vivid direction then you are definitely going to receive at a great cinematic experience.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Plotpiercer
On the positive stuff, I enjoyed the Tilda Swenton character very much, some of the directing and photography and part of the story. But the rest did not make any sense whatsoever.
Why would anyone - Major Spoiler coming up!!! - would actually manipulate a revolution inside the train, just to handle the populations, and not just stop feeding them till the numbers are right again? Or why wouldn't they just kill off a bunch, one by one, since they had bullets and all... Also, the almighty Wilford could not comprehend that a local hero from the tail section would never be interested in taking his place in front???
Regarding the directing, seems like he did not really know where to go with it. We had some Charlie and the Chocolate factory funny and weird scenes (and the whole Tilda Swenton character which I remind you saved the movie), and you had that villain like Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men, who actually resurrected just to die a scene later without actually adding anything to the rest of the movie. We also seen some Oldboy fighting sequences. The influences were not carefully blended together in the mix.
I will not bore you with smaller plot holes though, or stupidities and utter bullshit to be more accurate. You are intelligent beings and you probably wondered about them yourselves. If not, you probably gave this movie a 9/10 which is totally not worth it. A 5/10 is more like it, since it is an enjoyable movie, but leaves you wondering how much time the scriptwriters spent on writing the actual script and not just developing a simple idea they had while the movie unfolded.
300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
Sunk like those ships
I do not really know where to start here. I wanted to like this movie, and I enjoyed parts of watching it, definitely did not want to leave the theater, but left me a bad flavor in the mouth. I will not tire you all with the true story inconsistencies, as it is obviously a fiction story. However the first movie was 90% accurate to the known story, and was awesome, while this one was 90% fiction and sucked! Should have sticked to the true awesome story again.
First of all, except Eva Green who did a tremendous job, and of course Xerxes who we already knew, I think we had lots of miscasts here. First of all the actor who played Themistocles did a good acting job, but failed to built the proper physique. I know Athenians were not that built as Spartans by choice, which makes sense, since Spartans were training for war since children, but he looks untrained in many scenes and with fake abs. Still, he did a solid work, but failed also to make his character (and thus the rest of the Athenians) likable. I mean, I kinda hoped Eva Green would totally kick their ass in the end, and I am Greek! I even knew how the story ended, but I preferred the bad-ass Artemisia than those Greeks. For the miscasts, the father-son side-story had no real emotion or chemistry. Wealready seen similar story on the 1st movie. The part of queen Gorgo was lame too. I mean, you could not cast Gerard Butler, I understand that, and I truly believe a small appearance would actually help the story evolve and uprise the movie. But why go all the way and give Gorgo such a major part in the story (not to mention that Spartans in reality had a laughable navy)? She actually killed a few Persian warriors in a few secs. What the hell?? Oh! And she miraculously turned to a fully black-haired queen, probably to not confuse the character with the Game Of Thrones one, and be likable instead! That was awkward to say the least. By the way, the final scene with the horse was utter bullshit to say the least.
The direction was also bad in parts, with the constant slow-motion scenes and poor editing. Did not mind the blood though. I also could not find the extreme nudity that everyone was talking about. I only saw Eva Greens tities (which were awesome!) and another pair at the beginning of the movie, and that was it. What are you people crying out about??
They will probably make another sequel which I am pretty sure it will be even worse.
Warehouse 13 (2009)
So many better series out there to watch
I do not consider myself a 'series' type of guy. I prefer movies. But the last few years I've seen my share of quite a few series. Most of them are great. This one ain't. It is bad. The story, and the episode-to-episode scripts are bad. The acting is terrible too. The villain is first season is like a different version of Gargamel (from the Smurfs). Overacting or no acting at all is the receipe. Plus, all the clichés ever known to man are placed in here. It seems as if I have seen every episode before, or if I even heard of the most lines. I recommend to avoid it and see something different. If you like scifi see Fridge. If you already saw it, see it again! Just don't waste your time here
American Hustle (2013)
My favorite director to hate
I went to see American Hustle and expected a lot. With that cast, who wouldn't? Especially with Bale, as I cannot recall one single bad movie he ever did. Well... now I do! This movie is terrible. The script is meaningless: These guys ain't con artists. They are small time crooks. The story is based on a con by those con-artists, but you just cannot buy it. No cons are shown, nothing to impress us.
And the acting... they are all just yelling. Just like a really bad Almodovar movie. After seen 50minutes of the movie, with all the yelling, stupid acting by great actors, actors that also played in the equally terrible 'Silver Linings Playbook' (Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro) I connected the dots. It was Mr. David O. Russell that did the directing!! I did not know that before going to see the movie. After 'Silver Linings' I must have erased this director from my personal universe, a mistake I will never make again.
This movie is a great example of huge marketing and a bad bad movie, that will even go to the Oscars, just cause people are so idiotic to think they actually liked it, cause it was promoted so much. Silver Linings Playbook did not belong to the Oscars... did not belong to the theaters either. Neither does this movie.
Avoid at all costs!!! Don't watch it even for free, cause your 2 lost hours cannot be paid off. Don't buy every shitty movie they are trying to sell you.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
I really hate it when good series turn into soap operas
Since each season has its own characteristics, I decided to write a few words on each one and a separate review.
Season 1.
A clumsy pilot, full of directing errors and what looks to be a poor production. But, it rises above the surface and delivers one of the best series ever made with an amazing grand finale!!! The acting is beautiful, the lead actor for the role of Spartacus is amazing, so are the others like Crixus, Asour, Batiatus etc. Violence and bloodshed (just like the Manowar song!!) and much sex. The script is also great. 13 episodes to be remembered!!
Grade for season 1: 10/10
Season 0. After season 1 the lead actor was sick and could not participate at the filming so they made these 6 episodes where they show us the story of Gasnnicus and other characters that we already know, before the arrival of Spartacus. Very well done, keeps at the same high standards like the first season. Only that in this season I would like it to see: Opening with the battle of Enomaos (Dottori) with the Shadow of Death See Varro in a small part, gambling and losing money (which would end to his surrender to the house of Batiatus to pay the debts). Those would make the show a little better in my opinion. Still, great show once again, with great acting.
Grade for season 0: 8/10
Season 2. Oh my god what a nightmare! The new Spartacus cannot deliver. He is weak, looks weak, even the writers made his weak as a character (where he spares the life of Elithiya (did anyone know that Elithiya means stupid in Greek??? Its true, look it up!), the woman that tried to kill him, the woman that he tried to crash her neck when he realized it was her she was having sex with... Not only that but the script has holes everywhere. Lucretia rising from the dead (didn't anyone look at the house of Batiatus after the mass slaughter, didn't they gather the dead bodies, where was she? she should have been found). Also the Romans appear so weak and damn stupid, they get so spanked and fooled around, more that a "Astérix and Ovelix" movie!!!!!!! They put some gladiators to die in the arena yet no one ever thinks that Spartacus would come to free them and double/triple guards. The result? thousands of Romans (may first class citizens too) die at the burning and falling stadium. Still, they have assigned just a few men to hunt Spartacus down instead of sending thousands to end this rebellion. The Romans always attack in small numbers so that the rebels can easily kill them. They do never send scouts before proceeding. I could go on on and on with stupidities on their behalf (al credit goes to the script writers) but I would bore you.
Regarding acting, everyone here seems to have given up too. Crixus is bad a playing the lover that seeks his beloved (the script is bad here too), we said about the new Spartacus that is not only different in appearance and as a character also, but also is not as good actor and not convincing as the previous lead actor. My favorite actor though in all the show is the one that plays Assour. I have to admit that he shines, and he delivers a great performance every time he appears on screen. Great work and should be rewarded (looking to hear from his soon again). The others are mediocre or above average (Legatus was also good). Directing also became bad. Too many slow motions (I think Spartacus only moves in slo-mo, haven't seen him in real time for a few episodes). Everyone bleeds from the mouth, even for a cut at the thigh!! *true fact* But what is more important is the fact that I mentioned earlier, that the ones that gave up first were the script writers. They turned a great show into a damn soap opera.
Season 2 grade: 3/10
Season 3:
I would not watch it after the disappointment of the second season, but my girlfriend was watching and I had nothing to do so I sat and watched. Now Spartacus has made an army of misfits and ex-slaves against the Roman empire and he is the general in command. OK, lets see how it goes (only 2 episodes aired so far). At least now they have created the character of Krassos, a rich, ambitious Roman, that outmatches everyone we have ever seen in cunningness, ability, skill etc (even skillful as a gladiator). Finally they realized this series needs a worthy opponent. So I hope it will at least be better that the previous season. We'll just have to wait and see.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Terrible movie, expected much more
I really cannot understand what people are thinking and giving it such high ratings. The movie, according to IMDb is supposed to be a Comedy / Drama / Romance movie. Well... forget the Comedy. The jokes are rare and oftenly poor
Drama... Nope, didn't feel that Romance? Don't make me laugh. Cheesy and shallow as well. Does not creep under your skin.
I expected so much more from David Russell especially after "The Fighter". I expected so much more from a great cast like this also. DeNiro is OK, I really liked Jacki Weavers performance but I believe Bradley Cooper was a bad casting choice. He is OK for parts like Hangover or the pretty boy in others. I also liked him in Limitless but he could not persuade me at the role of the crazy person. I would prefer another actor in his place, maybe Jack Black (that could actually bring some fun into this so- called-comedy).
I think it does not even deserve a view, just proceed to the next movie choice and leave this one on the shelf
Argo (2012)
definitely Overrated
Not a bad movie, keep the tense at high levels and I think its the best directing effort of Ben Affleck. In fact, his directing is so good that kept viewers watching an over simplistic - as it can be - plot (americans hiding in Canadian embassy, American walks in with fake passports in hand and puts them on a plane) that he managed to get great reviews. I believe they did not have much ground for a movie here, true stories that are very interesting are rare nowadays. Plus, I always reject the US propaganda in movies (we did it all and let Canadians take the credit but we want to take this credit away and restore the 'truth' that we saved everyone)
Overall, I would really like to see some more Ben Affleck movies soon
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
I thought I loved Indiana Jones movies
Saturday afternoon and the TV started playing this movie. I had nothing to do and liked the idea of seeing an old good 'classic' that I have not seen since I was a kid.
The movie is terrible. Sometimes it looks like a poor low budget series or videotape movie.
But the worst of all is the script. Indy meeting with Adolph Hitler and Hitler hands him his autograph???
I used to think it was a real adventure but now I realized it is a family comedy, a movie for children, where 100 persons die and no blood is shed. Where the script has more holes than a cheddar cheese. When nothing makes sense... poor Indy...
That Evening Sun (2009)
an old man fighting his demons? An alternative point of view
Nice movie, the old man is a likable character, still is a 'not very nice' person. It seems he was not really nice to his family either. The name of the guy he is trying to throw away from his home is Choat, kind of reminds me of the word "Tchort" that means Devil in Slavic languages: "Tchort is a Slavonic word (Russian Чёрт, Czech and Slovak Čert, Ukrainian and Belarusian Чорт) meaning Devil" Source:wikipedia Made me wonder if its allegoric and the man was trying to overcome and win his demons instead. Imagine the home being empty and not finding the courage to go inside, that overflowning home of memories of his wife... Finally he overcame his guilts and found peace. Just another point of view, food for thought ;)
Der siebente Kontinent (1989)
Are you guys on drugs?
Seriously, this movie is so boring!
*spoiler coming you'll regret you never read*
The story of the movie is: couple with a daughter, bored of their meaningless everyday lives decided to suicide but first sells all their assets, flushes their money and destroy their belongings.
Thats it!!!! Seriously, thats it, you'll thank me for not letting you see this booooooring 2 hours long movie where nothing happens!!
Endless meaningless scenes like brushing teeth, eating cereal. Static scenes also, no camera movement for the entire movie. I begged for something good to happen but no...
Animal Kingdom (2010)
What was Guy Pearce thinking?
I saw this movie only because Guy Pearce whom I really respect played in it. The problem was not that his part was small, but that his part had no real value whatsoever... I mean anyone could play that cop, Guy is a great actor that should aim higher than that.
As for the movie... started off well but got extremely boring. The really slow emotional parts with intense music seemed to work until they put it in every little scene, like when the guy was tying his laces and we were looking at Guy Pearce's butt. Jesus...
Overall we saw some potential, I liked the kids playing and a few other actors I did not know off, but I would not recommend anyone to see this movie...
To kako - Stin epohi ton iroon (2009)
I was expecting so much more....
The first movie was really good. Even though the special effects were terrible, it had everything a good Zom-B-Movie needed: action, fun lines, great characters.
Having seen the trailer of this sequel and understanding a few things about the storyline, also knowing that they had a better budget this time (having Billy Zein sure wasn't for free) left me with huge expectations on this one. Too bad they were never met.
The idea was cool but the script was terrible. Bad lines, mostly cursing whenever they could not find a good line to use. Some of the acting was still bad, I liked the character of the father of the taxi driver though. Fun Greek dude. The punk could be a good additional character, however he was nothing but a regular boring character with punk clothing and appearance.
I had to pause the movie multiple times for a break though as it had large moments where it was uninteresting (or should I say boring?) The action was definitely missing. Lame love stories and chasing bad guys instead of zombies to a post apocalyptic Athens...
The special effects were somehow improved but I was still disappointed from the zombie killings. No inspiration, they were just penetrating the zombie heads with everything you can imagine: sticks, bones, cut off hands, shoes whatever!! Seriously guys, I know its a fiction movie, but how could anyone pierce a scull with minimum effort and a 'weapon' like that? I'm surprised they did not kill any zombies by cutting open their heads by hitting them with a raw egg or something...
Overall, it seems to me like if the script was written overnight and the movie shot within 2 days (but it wasn't!)
