Close Enough (2020)
Finally, Regular Show the way it was meant to be.
Regular Show will go down as one of Cartoon Network's greatest shows of all time. With all of the adult humor packed into the show's eight seasons, it attracted a very big adult following. It even looked like an Adult Swim show. When it ended in January 2017, a lot of people were wondering what JG Quintel's next move would be. That question would be answered in June of that year when Close Enough was announced for TBS. After three painful years of limbo, the show ended up premiering on HBO Max in 2020.
Close Enough is about the surreal misadventures of millennial couple Josh (Quintel) and Emily (Gabrielle Walsh), both in their 30s, their young daughter Candice (Jessica DiCicco), and divorced best friends Alex (Jason Mantzoukas) and Bridgette (Kimiko Glenn), all living together in a Los Angeles duplex. Their landlord is Pearle (Danielle Brooks), a former LAPD officer, and her adopted son is Randy (James Adomian). Josh works at Geek Squad knockoff Plugger Inners, while Emily has an unknown job at FoodCorp. Josh has aspirations of becoming a video game designer, while Emily has aspirations of forming a big-time comedy-rock duo with Bridgette (and they both have pretty good singing voices). Alex is a professor at a local college (and also bears a striking resemblance to his voice actor, Mantzoukas), and Bridgette is a good-for-nothing slacker who fools around on Instagram (sounds like another duo we all know and love, minus the Instagram part)
Like Regular Show, licensed songs are used here. "Room Parents" used "Crazy on You" by Heart, "Snailin' It" used "Too Much Time On My Hands" by Styx, and "100% No Stress Day" used "Stay Fly" by Three 6 Mafia.
My thoughts: if you liked Regular Show, you'll absolutely love Close Enough. It looks like Regular Show, feels like Regular Show, and feels like a true spiritual successor to Regular Show. You'll have a fun time watching it, as I did. It was worth the three-year wait.
The Grinch (2018)
The Grinch, or A Despicable Me Christmas
The Grinch is a movie that was released last year. I know that the film, like the 2000 live action film, is supposed to be based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name, but parts of it felt like Despicable Me without Gru and the girls. Benedict Cumberbatch was great in the film as the Grinch, and there are times where he kinda sounded like Kelsey Grammer.
This film is not that great, but not awful either. It's a decent evolution from the 2000 film and the book.
Infinity Train (2019)
Must-watch.
Infinity Train is about a girl named Tulip Olsen who desires to be a game designer. Frustrated by her parents' divorce, and how they were unable to take her to Game Design Camp in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, she takes it upon herself to go to camp alone. She finds a train in the woods that she thinks is taking her to Oshkosh, but is really not. Once she hops aboard, she's in for an adventure of a different kind.
Along the way she meets a small, sphere robot named One-One and a talking Corgi dog named Atticus. You'll just have to watch the show to find out more from there.
This show deals with tough topics that Steven Universe doesn't touch. You will be left crying and on the edge of your seat.
Despite it being billed as a miniseries, it is a "series of miniseries". Book 1 of the series dealt with Tulip's story, but Book 2 deals with Jesse's story.
If this show doesn't excite you, please check your pulse.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
A heart-tugging documentary.
Won't You Be My Neighbor is a great documentary that will make you tear up and cry. It follows the life and times of Fred Rogers, better known to us as Mister Rogers.
As a person in his early 20s who grew up watching Mister Rogers Neighborhood, this documentary was absolutely heart tugging, especially at the parts where Mister Rogers is seen interacting with children with his puppets. It gave me massive feels and it was a blast black to my childhood.
I felt engaged throughout the documentary and you will be too. Don't let it pass you by.
Life Is Strange (2015)
A must-play. Pure and simple.
When I randomly downloaded the first (free) episode of Life Is Strange for my new Xbox One one late Friday night, I didn't expect to get hooked on the first episode. I later purchased the entire season for $20, a great bargain. I also purchased the prequel, Before The Storm, as well, but that's another review for another time.
The game follows a high school photography student named Maxine "Max" Caulfield, who attends Blackwell University in Arcadia Bay. During a lecture from Mr. Jefferson, her teacher, she discovers that she has the power to rewind time. While in the women's bathroom taking a picture of a blue butterfly, she witnesses the murder of her childhood friend, troubled teen Chloe Price, by another troubled teen, Nathan Prescott. She uses her rewind powers to revive Chloe and ring an alarm in the bathroom to evacuate the school. What happens after that? You'll have to play to find out.
Much of the game is influenced by what decisions you make and what you say in the game, and you can always rewind to change the outcome of what happens. Actions or decisions with consequences are indicated by a butterfly, and a fact you learned from a conversation is indicated by a speech bubble with three dots.
Life Is Strange is a game filled with heartbreaking moments, tough love, and deep, hard, truths about life. The first episode is free, and the entire season is only $20 on the Microsoft Store, so there's no excuse to let this game pass you by.
Game Night (2018)
Fast paced comedy-adventure
This movie is good. What seems like a normal game night quickly turns into a murder mystery that six friends must solve. There are two false endings to the movie, the real ending takes place on a plane. This is a fun movie that just zips by.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
A 2 1/2 hour thrill ride
Avengers: Infinity War is so good, you must see it in 3D. Every Avenger is here, from Spider-Man, to Iron Man, to Doctor Strange, to Black Panther, and others. I won't spoil anything, but this is a movie my theater was engaged in from start to finish. It surprisingly had a lot of funny parts in it, as my theater was laughing through much of the movie. My theater started booing and jeering when the credits started rolling (although many stayed through the credits in hopes of a post-credits scene).
This movie is must-see.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
A great comedic Batman movie anyone can enjoy
The LEGO Batman movie is geared towards kids, but adults can get great mileage out of this movie, too. It mixes the spirit of Batman with with the childhood memory creator that is LEGO. In the movie, Batman finds out that Gotham City doesn't need him anymore, citing the lack of capture of Gotham's baddest villains. The new Commissioner Gordon takes over all crime fighting. Batman then unawaringly adopts somebody from the orphanage, one of his biggest fans who later becomes his sidekick, Robin. The Joker thinks Batman doesn't think he's his greatest enemy, so he sets out to prove that by releasing monsters from the Phantom Zone. Near the end, when the city separates, Batman convinces Joker to help him save the city, and the city of Gotham helps out as well.
The movie has the allure of colors of LEGO for the kids, while older adults will appreciate the adult references and callbacks to prior Batman movies. The LEGO Batman Movie is something all ages can enjoy.
Black Panther (2018)
Black is powerful, and this movie shows it
Marvel's Black Panther is one of those movies that's a game changer for the Black community. It is the first-ever comic superhero movie that features a black person as the lead role (not counting Hancock, as that was not based off a comic book). It features a predominately black cast, and was directed by a black man, Ryan Coogler. It breaks some media stereotypes about black people, and it's really something. If you haven't seen it, you should ASAP. It is simply breathtaking, especially in 3D. The movie might be one of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it's going to be hard to top this.
OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes (2017)
When Steven Universe meets Dragon Ball Z, this happens.
"OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes" is a cartoon created by Ian Jones-Quartey, who also worked on Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time and Rebecca Sugar's Steven Universe. It started out as "Lakewood Plaza Turbo", a pilot that was released along with the Steven Universe pilot in 2013.
The show revolves around a kid named K.O., whose goal in life is to be the ultimate hero. With his friends Enid and Radicles (the latter of which is who an adult Steven Universe would look like if he were blue, an alien, and ripped), they all work at Gar's grocery store, owned by the legendary Mr. Gar. K.O.'s mother Carol (née Silverspark) is a former superhero turned fight instructor.
The show's main villain is Lord Boxman, who sometimes dispatches some of his henchmen to fight for him (hint: his henchmen come down from the sky in boxes). Sometimes, the team fights (and messes with) Boxman himself.
In one episode, K.O. befriends Dendy, who should remind some Steven Universe fans of Peridot. She and Peridot have close to the same voice and they're both green nerds. It's also a prime shipping opportunity.
Where it reminds me of Dragon Ball Z is because of the anime-looking characters. I think K.O. could be compared to young Goku in some areas.
My favorite episode of the series as of this writing is "You Have To Care", where Enid catches up with her old rival and former "friend", Elodie. There's plenty of action and a emotional finish. You'll have to watch the episode for yourself to know what I'm talking about.
I think "OK K.O." is a fine cartoon. I'm giving it a 7 because it can be corny and juvenile at times, but not to the point where it's unwatchable for young adults. Kids will love this, obviously, but I think it will be a good successor to Steven Universe when it goes off the air. It's not for everyone, but give it a chance. I think you'll like it.
The Powerpuff Girls (2016)
Not the Powerpuff Girls I Remember
The Powerpuff Girls I knew as a kid never worshiped teen pop groups. Nor did they make outdated internet meme faces. And they certainly never got deserted on an island.
This spun out POS literally destroyed my childhood. I watched the original Powerpuff Girls from my childhood all the way to the series finale in 2009, The Powerpuff Girls Rule! I thought it would be a fitting end to the series and should've been left alone. Fast forward 7 years later, and we have this. Gone are Catherine Cavadini, Tara Strong, and E.G. Daily, in are Amanda Leighton, Natalie Palamides, and Kristin Li as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, respectively. I wonder why CN refused to bring back the former trio of voice actors to reprise their roles. I'm sure Daily could still pull off Buttercup even while she's still in her 50s. But Tom Kane is back as Professor Utonium, Jennifer Hale is back as Mrs. Keane, Tom Kenny is back as the Mayor, and Roger Jackson is back as Mojo Jojo.
PPG2016 is offensive for those who grew up with the original Powerpuff Girls, and I know the show staff means well, but some things are better left alone. It is starting to go the way of Teen Titans Go! with its childish humor and juvenile jokes. The original Powerpuff Girls was much more mature than this. Hopefully CN doesn't decide to revive Dexter's Laboratory or Johnny Bravo and screw that up, too.
Chronicle (2012)
A blast
Chronicle is one of those movies that will be worth watching and re-watching again and again. I guarantee it.
Andrew is a Seattle boy who is shy, timid, and gets bullied around, until one night when he befriends a boy named Steven. Andrew, Steven, and Andrew's cousin Matt find a random pothole in the forest that is stuffed with crystals that gives them superpowers. They have fun with their newly-acquired powers.
Andrew lets his powers take over his mind that he goes insane just to help his dying mother. He almost kills his father in one scene out of anger.
In short, this film is worth watching just for the powers and how they use them. There are also a lot of dramatic moments to keep butts in seats, as well. Give it a whirl.
