Goosebumps (2023)
Interesting take - Take it as a stand alone series
As a child, I grew up idealising the "Goosebumps" books as a childs first step into the thriller/horror genre. I have watched, read and devoured all that "Goosebumps" has had to offer.
This is an interesting and different way to tell a few of the tales.... well the base of some of the stories anyway. Take it with a grain of salt and don't compare it to the actual books. It is an alright and enjoyable stand alone streaming season. I do hope there is more. The acting is well done and it has a very dark undertone which I enjoyed immensely. Do not expect it to be like the books and just enjoy the ride.
Watcher (2022)
Missed the mark
This movie had me loving the characters, thinking of the twists and really into it... until the end when it showed it was so obvious and there was no character development. It feels like they had a great idea and then got bored and wanted to end before their fav show turned on. I loved the actors and i really feel if they had added more to the story, it would have been a 9 star. I felt nothing at the end. The one character had no real reason for being and the others were flat by the end. I really wanted to love this but the ending the the "Killer" really ruined it for me. I was hoping for more.
Darkness in Tenement 45 (2020)
Watch it if you have free time
This movie i poorly written and poorly acted. I was really hoping that this as one of those gems that have an amazing story that makes up for the terrible cinematography and the horrid acting but sadly, the story was very sub par. I wanted to like this but there is no redeeming qualities to this movie. watch it if you are bored and want something that will not excite your mind in any way.
Bad Girl (2016)
Just a small town girl....
A girl, who has been in trouble with the law, drugs and alcohol move to another small town in aus. She is teen who does not like the people raising her. Out of no where a girl comes into her life. She tries to make an already "Bad girl" even worse. The acting is not too bad, the story is fine and I really feel bad for the kids in this. The parents assume the worst from the get go and the mother never wavers. It has good cinematography but all in all the characters were not at all great. Worth a watch but dont expect the greatness of any Aussie classic
We Summon the Darkness (2019)
Tragically tragic
I should have known when i saw that Johnny Knoxville was a preacher on TV that this would be terrible. The girls gave me some hope near the beginning but it really is a poor excuse for a movie. Bless them for trying. The tiny "Twist" revealed in a moment of the movie really doesnt deserve praise, its just a reason for stupid deaths. Then again, the costumes were pretty cute and true to time.
The Hunt (2020)
Good until the end
This movie was fun and weird all up until the end. Why would a person who has worked in an office forever be able to have a big fight and almost win with a person who who fought in Afghanistan in the army and has killed every one else with no problems. I mean....... WTF
The Devil's Chair (2007)
They tried
Its not a good movie when the twist is what you knew at the start. There is no real story at all. It was handed to you on a silver platter. Acting is fine.
Don't Hang Up (2016)
YAY death
When you start watching, you really want the original characters to get their dues. They are assholes who terrorize the community. When they start to get whats coming to them, you get a little bit of feeling for them but not enough. To be honest. You feel more for the "baddie" than the protagonists in this film. No real story or pay off. Zero twists.
The Skeptic (2009)
Sadly lacking
From the get go it seemed like B feature. It had a number of known actors and held great promise as it continued. Sadly the build up led to no much and the ending fell short. It was enjoyable until the fall. Its almost like they got scared of where it was going and changed direction in the last 60 seconds.
Dark Awakening (2014)
Worth a watch but don't expect anything great.
I am a big fan of thriller and horror, and I love a great haunted house story.
I'll be honest, I turned this film off after 15 minutes and watched another film but decided it wasn't fair to a film that I had been pretty keen to see so I started it from my left off position.
The acting seemed a bit... sketchy from the get go, with little to no facial expression and pretty terrible dialogue. It wasn't until about 20 minutes in that I believed the actors were actually trying.
It felt like a 1990s horror TV show ( maybe because Lance Henriksen was in it... and the lighting.)
The antagonists* of the story are very well done with make up etc. Although I felt they really seemed/looked more like zombies than ghosts.
The music really helped the movie immensely. I was epic in proportion to the rest of the movie. Dark and mysterious. Beautifully done.
There are parts that to kick and scream the film into being something well done and enjoyable.
Try and ignore the vast amount of obvious issues and stupidity of some of the characters. So much martyring, so much weakness. It really made me hate most of the characters. The end is appalling in so many ways (and not one of them a good one)
All in all, worth a watch but don't expect anything great. Still its not a D rated piece of goza so that is something.
The Sleeping Room (2014)
Quite good really
It took me a long time to find this movie and as it started, I considered turning it off. It seemed very poorly made and the characters grated me. As I gave it a second chance, it did not need a third. The story is simple but effective and you start really caring about Blue and all that is happening to her. There was no twist, so don't look for one. It was highly enjoyable and the characters became more full as it went. Not so much development, just stronger. The story was that of a camp fire tale,in my mind that went directly without any twists, turns or red herrings. I enjoyed this film but won't watch it again.
Lemon Tree Passage (2014)
Same ole same ole.
I will begin this by saying I am a horror/thriller lover. Anything from Evil Dead to Shutter Island to Saw. Love them!!! I watched this honestly because A) I try and watch all that i can get my hands on and; b) because my family live in lemon tree passage and I thought I may be able to freak them out with a tale. The story was..... mundane. You really didn't care who died or lived through it and the twist at the end is not what you would call a twist. The story was sorely told and there was no real information or moments to give you the gasp factor. Neither was there enough blood to go the B grade blood bath movie that needs no real plot to go on. This movie wasn't terrible. It wasn't good either. The actors were average and kind of cute. Honestly they didn't even show the best of the area they were in (which is gorgeous) It is a very easy watch with nothing that could catch up even the drunkest of watchers. It is average.
Lucy (2014)
Interesting SciFi. Worth watching
This film seems to be a low rated one. I would have to disagree with the lower ratings.
Lucy explores a normal girl being used as an unwilling and unmeaning experiment. A party girl betrayed by a friend/ex lover is turned into something indefinitely more through the acts of drug trafficking and violence.
She becomes everything that we as humans could be if we were more interested in what we are as apposed to what we do.
The cast seems to be quite mundane in their acting and this is where the lower rating comes into play. Scarlet is a tough bird who has mostly no emotion to begin with and that is even before she starts becoming a ultra being devoid of emotion. She does have a few moments where you see the grace and greatness of her acting shine through which does save the movie. Morgan Freeman does have a few believable moments but the film doesn't really give him a lot of room to develop character. He is, as always, amazing. The other characters you basically care little for.
The point of the movie is the development of the human race and what would happen if we were able to gain control of a larger percentage of the mind. This movie had nice effects and really made you think of Lucy as both a human and a super being, caring for her in both likenesses. I enjoyed it and will tell others they should watch.
Riddle (2013)
No depth but an easy watch
This film seems to have been given a pretty bad wrap. Even still I decided to give it a go. The story line is easy to follow and answers all the questions the movie gives you (as long as you are not expecting an insane twist.) Val, I believe, was really never given much to develop (character wise) in the film, which is disappointing. Actually, none of the characters really made you care. They really played up the American small town 'cultish' feel. Without going into any detail regarding the plot or giving any spoilers, the story progressed naturally and actually made me feel like I was watching a 'point and click adventure computer game' (which is fine for me as I enjoy them.) All in all, it was flat but I good brainless film to watch. It was enjoyable but nothing special and I am sure there is no reason to watch the movie a second time to see if anything was missed through the first viewing.
The Midnight Game (2013)
Underwhelming
This movie had so much promise with the pagan rituals and the interesting plot. I had been waiting a good while to find it. Even though it did bring in the over played teenagers playing a dare style situation on each other and trying to scare the girl into the boys arms, it still maintained value. Unfortunately, the story line and ending left us feeling wanting. It seemed to be heading to a great climactic event but it ended so abruptly that I wondered if I had blinked an missed something. The acting was well done and believable mostly. I enjoyed it until the anti-climax. All in all it was enjoyable and great ideas that were not fully developed. With the climax lacking, 3 stars is all we could agree on.
