Luna de Avellaneda (2004)
Long and sometimes slow, but still great!
I am a great admirer of Juan Jose Campanella's films and this was the main reason why I decided to watch this film in first place. I did watch Son of the Bride and The Secret of Your Eyes, both great films. Ricardo Darin was another reason why I decided to watch it. I think he is now the greatest actor in the Hispanic cinema. It's amazing how the Capanella-Darin contributions worked so well in this "trilogy".
What is really cool about those films is that Campanella can create from a different situation many parallel stories. Like here for example, the main plot in "Luna..." is the administration board trying to save their beloved 70 year club from bankruptcy and to avoid the club to be sold and to build in his place a casino instead. From that plot Campanella shows not just the effort that the club employees do in order to save the club but he also shows the family and love relationships in the life of those people.
The trademark in the Campanella films is that he can balance the comedy with the drama. The soundtrack is beautiful as well like in all his films always with a great presence. The chemistry between Darin and Eduardo Blanco is always moving.
Although the film could it be a little bit shorter and sometimes the story does not develop as it should, its another great film by Juan Jose Campanella and Ricardo Darin that I definitely recommend it!
As Melhores Coisas do Mundo (2010)
For all ages!
As Melhores Coisas do Mundo (World's Greatest things) is set in the city of Sao Paulo and tells the story of a group of teenagers that are discovering the greatest and important things about life while they are growing up.
The main character (and narrator)is Hermano, or "Mano" to his friends. A 15 year old teenager (obviously) who is facing the most difficult period of his life after his parents decide to separate. This must be the abyss for anyone in such a young age. He shares this pain with his older brother Pedro (Fiuk, a pleasant surprise playing a very strong character full of despair).
Mano is a teenager like any other. He concerns about going to school, playing the guitar, parting with his friends and trying to score the most beautiful girl in school. He tries to keep his life normal even if his relationship with his parents is falling apart. His best friend is a female. Her name is Carol, a girl about his age who shares with him her feelings like being in love with her physics teacher(Caio Blat).
I am a big fan of Lais Bodansky's previous films "Bicho de Sete Cabecas"(Brainstorm) and "Chega de Saudade"(The Ballroom). I knew that she would do a decent work. What I really liked on her directing is that she used real teenagers on her cast and not 20 year old actors playing teenagers, like Larry Clark also did in Kids (1995). With the exception of Fiuk (who is now a music and TV teen idol in Brazil) the all cast is made by unknown actors.
I think this film is like a mix of Kids (1995), Juno (2007) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), but that also doesn't mean that this movie is not original.
This movie exposes so many subjects such as teenage sex, drugs, suicide, homosexuality, brotherhood, parenthood, friendship, love, innocence, secrets, music and the most amazing thing that I thought that was really fascinating that Lais captured here is how the evolution of technology affects the lives of us.
It's impossible to not identify yourself after watching this film, to not have a nostalgic feeling for those who went through this age or for the ones who are going through right now. You are gonna laugh and cry at the same time, but you are gonna leave the theater with a big smile.
Thank you Lais for making us proud. You proved that we don't need to show violence or nudity to do a great and beautiful film that I will never forget.
Encarnação do Demônio (2008)
Terrible!
I still don't know how come I went to the movies to watch this piece of crap. I read some of the reviews and they all said that was a "great horror movie", "a true masterpiece" and "amazing, thrilling and horrifying".
I don't know what's wrong with those critics here in Brazil on saying that this is a "great horror movie". It wasn't great and either a "horror movie". All I did was laugh, laugh...and laugh like I never laugh in any other comedy I ever watched.
Coffin Joe in probably the worst actor of all time. His monologues and alucinations were hilarious instead of being "horrifying". If this movie were a comedy I would give a better grade instead of 2/10. This movie was supposed to be scared and all I did was laugh.
This movie has a lot of uncalled sex scenes, so if you are looking for a porno movie this is IT. If you are also looking for lots of blood spilling, human torture scenes that will make "Saw" a Disney film and performances that will make the "Disaster Movie" cast proud you will have lots of fun, but don't go with the expectations on being scared.
SPOILERS
The worst scene? A hot young woman having sex with Coffin Joe's death body at the end.
Love Actually (2003)
The greatest love story of our time
Is definitely the most beautiful love story of this century or I can say that is maybe the greatest love story (stories) of all times. I still cant believe how Bill Nighy wasn't nominate for the Academy award for best supporting actor on this year and how Richard Curtis for his beautiful and well done screenplay! Instead they put the boring Lost in Translation between the nominees. No offense but between the melancholic American dramatic comedy I rather prefer 100% the touching, funny, pure and true British romantic comedy. I guess the Academy didn't put the British film between the nominees for the critics that they show about the US government and saying that the American woman are "easy" to find. Watching Love Actually for the first time you will have a lot of feelings and you'll identify yourself with any of the characters. Is incredible how each story moves us in a way that we stay focus on the screen for 135 minutes enjoying each scene and each dialog. What is also incredible are the good selected songs that play along the film ending up with "God Only knows" by the Beach Boys. You wont regret in watching it and you will see that the cinema doest need melancholic movies thats ends up in tragedies or teenager romantic films. Is beautiful, touching and is for sure the greatest love story of our time.
Shine (1996)
Geoffrey Rush or Noah Taylor
Which actor did you like most? Although Geoffrey's performance was only for 30 minutes I think he did an amazing job and the Oscar was well deserved. At that time I got disappointed because I thought that Tom Cruise deserved more but I said that before watching Shine. Noah Taylor did an amazing performance as well and I think he deserved an best supporting actor nomination. What is most fascinating on the movie is the classical music and also the performances of Geoffrey Rush, Noah Taylor, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Lynn Redgrave and John Gilgud. This movie is a proof that the Australian cinema is strong! Now which actor do you think that did the best job as David Helfgott? Geoffrey Rush or Noah Taylor?
