Batman (sort of) Begins Again
6 March 2022
It's a bleak return to Gotham with a new, moodier, Batman! With Reeves in the directors chair, this was always going to be a good film, BUT as I feared this is a return to Nolan's aestethic. If you've seen Batman Begins, Se7en and any decent mob movie, well here they are altogether in one film... is that a bad thing? 🤔 I'm not sure!

Acting wise, everyone brings their A-game.

Pattinson is a decent Batman but his introduction would have had more heft had they not shown it in the bloody trailer. I'll also mention that Battinson is literally the most GROUNDED Batman on film. That guy didn't fly across rooftops at all I don't think!?!?

More Catwoman all day long! Zoe Kravitz owned it.

Dano as Riddler? Excelsior!

Wright's Gordon (not commissioner yet) is good too and I think this is the most time we've spent with the character.

Farrell does a good turn as Oswald Cobblepot... very enjoyable but he's a bit player here and not very Penguiny!

Overall, it's a solid 8 & 1/2 out of 10 for me. I'll definitely rewatch at some point but all the chatter about not seeing a Batman like this is a bit of a fallacy: okay, basically someone put Batman in Seven and ran with it.

... also, don't bother with waiting for a credits stinger. 2 seconds of disappointment 😂

Pimp (2018)

Unfavourable reviews from petty youths?

Not going to lie, I do love a bleak movie and more than anything this film demonstrated the lack of glamour in the world of pimps hustling to make a buck. Keke Palmer's Wednesday is conflicting and hard to love but she rolls out the part beautifully, Hayley Ramm's long suffering Nikki is also a beautiful character eliciting so much emotion as a girl doing whatever she needs to keep her 'momma' happy and that dream alive. Vanessa Morgan as Destiny is by the numbers and Aunjanue Ellis as Wednesday's mother draws comparisons with Monique's stellar turn in 'Precious'

But the standout for me was Edi Kathegi's amazing run as the unhinged, merciless Psycho Pimp, Kenny! Edi brought some chops.

Whilst this isn't an Oscar winner it deserves a nod for its ambition and its deep characterisations maybe they could have spread that a little further but a good effort nonetheless.
