Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: American Tragedy (2013)
PRD is the answer
Video surveillance HD cameras would have helped in cases like this. They are sorely needed to record activities in every public space. Every cubic inch should be covered in high resolution. There should be no expectation of privacy outside one's own home. Everyone should have the right to walk safely in public. The only way to ensure this is to have a record of public conduct. We already have some video surveillance systems in place. I myself have installed dash cams in my vehicle, and I wear a couple of concealed body cameras in public. In the near future, individuals should have the option to wear a Personal Recording Device (PRD) that uploads Point-of-View video to the Internet through Wi-Fi. That should put an end to this kind of American Tragedy.
Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
Apparently too subtle for some
This was an excellent horror film, but apparently not obvious enough for some viewers. A few of the scares were the jump-out-of-your-seat variety, but most of the scares were subtle and creepy, so you have to pay attention to get them (for example, Robbie appearing and disappearing from the soccer game, and the shadow kid that follows Wyatt down the stairs). If you have the attention span of a gnat, you'll miss them completely.
It's not pure found-footage POV when we see the computer screens that Ben and Alex are watching together. (Who would film themselves and the computer screen while watching a video file or doing a Google search?) Many reviewers have complained about the fact that the family didn't watch the video files that would have shown what was happening. This is easily understood. For one thing, Alex and Ben were the only ones aware that they were filming the family. Also, Ben was the only one capable of retrieving the video files, and he was not available to do it a lot of the time. Finally, even if you're reviewing at 8X normal speed, it still takes 3 hours to review 24 hours of footage if you're not using motion-activation.
I loved the downstairs set, which looks a lot like my own home, adding to the creep factor.
All of the actors were very good and effectively drew me into the story. The teenagers tended to curse lot more than 17-year-olds that I know, but other than that, they were very believable.
