Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
Empowers regular people? Yes. Sets a good example? Yes. Is Coulson more bad ass than ever? Do you even have to ask?
So I was skeptic to give Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a go, and here's why giving it a benefit of doubt turned out to be one of the best choices of my life.
Do you know what this show teaches? That everyone deserves a second chance. It teaches compassion and shows people a way to communicate and work with people that at first you think you have no similar views or values with. (Including working out their issues and learning from their mistakes.) So, if you're a parent, dubious on whether the show, due to the few violence scenes, is okay for your kid, then consider the message and what it can teach your child. We literally witness a group of unlikely people becoming a family. Not just a team, a family. (Their own words.) I don't know enough shows that, instead of displaying petty arguments for humor(sitcoms, basically), concentrate on bringing people together. I think, this show teaches that, there's more to the first look, that, a lot of times things are superficial and if you don't make the effort to dig in and pay attention, you let pass of a lot of important and often times founding aspects.
The first two episodes were a bit rocky for me, the team was freshly formed, we didn't have a chance to form an emotional bond to the characters yet, but I continued. Turns out guys in suits? Not so bad. It quickly becomes a whirlwind, you get to delve deeper into the characters and see them build remarkable friendships. I'm saying, there's more to the pilot, more to the introduction.
If you're about to discredit my review with "Yeah, but I was expecting more," I don't think you understand. I'm ADDICTED to this show after giving it a second chance. I re-watch the episodes. It literally pains me to wait a week or more for the next episode, because the level of which I now feel connected to the characters surprises me. The whole reveal of Coulson's resurrection is not something you want to miss, trust me - give my review the benefit of doubt I gave this show.
The Thundermans (2013)
A sensible review by a young adult.
To look at this show in context, we have to realize that it's a Nick show with a target audience for kids->teens; is in the comedy genre and since it's not really meant to be an adult blockbuster, well, it doesn't have have to be fancy, or have backed up scientifically explanations on everything, it's obvious the show is here to deliver fun. And it's great to remember what being a kid is -- kids love fantasy, stories, the unusual and fantastic. Add too much explanations and you loose the charm of a comedy. Well, this just to put in in perspective.
Personally, and as an adult who loves both good family comedy shows and then stuff like Sherlock BBC or Supernatural, I thought the show was funny, charming, engaging, and got better with every episode. Sure Nora's laser eyes at the pilot seem cheesy at first, but when you let yourself sit back and enjoy the show for what it's intended to, well, the family grows on you real quick. Especially the kids, they're the most ridiculous things. I ended up seeing the entire first season in one night, and that's a lot, considering I'm not the target audience, right? Anyway, I can't wait for the next episodes and really hope the show gets renewed for more seasons to come, my rating for it ranges between a 7-8, but as a kids show, I'd give it all 9.
Enjoy and ignore the person who gives off the idea that art is a joke to them, no show objectively deserves a 0, people have been putting time and effort and love in creating this thing.
