Extraordinarily Beautiful
28 November 2016
I honestly don't think I have ever seen a movie as original and surreal as this, in the world of remakes, reboots and an overload of superhero films, Swiss Army Man truly is a breath of fresh air for the movie industry. The film starts out with Paul Dano's character Hank, a depressed, isolated man attempting suicide on a deserted island seemingly far from civilization, when just as he's about to go through with it, a washed up body appears on shore that is supposedly dead. After discovering the body has supernatural powers that can help him survive, Hank sets off on an insane journey with his new friend and corpse named Manny, played brilliantly by Daniel Radcliffe, where they discuss life, love and what it means to be human all whilst trying to get out of the woods.

This movie is the definition of original, there is nothing like it and this is one of the main reasons as to why it stands out for me and why I love it. Everything about it works so incredibly well, the direction is unique and works splendidly for the film, the editing is great as well as the cinematography, the acting is exceptional from both leads, not to mention the music is down right perfect in this movie. The whole thing is what it looks like when the filmmakers really let go and express themselves in the most bizarre way imaginable and for that, I love them for it.

Something that really surprised me while watching it was just how incredibly funny it was, there was so much great humor mainly due to Daniel Radcliffe who was very hilarious throughout the entire movie, one thing I admire about it is it's not crude for the sake of being crude, it has a much deeper meaning to it about freedom, what it means to truly be free, and what is normal and what is considered wrong/different.

The film literally blew me away, I laughed and I cried many many times while watching, it is very rare a movie like Swiss Army Man comes along and sweeps you off your feet with it's unique beauty and mind blowing creativity. It's the kind of movie you will think about for days on end, not because it's thought provoking but because it's special, because it has heart. If you have ever experienced loneliness in your life, even for a short while then you will appreciate this film just that little bit more. Either way though, I think each individual will relate to it in some way, shape or form, because at the end of the day we're all a little weird.
