Diablo (2015)
So Amateurish
I'm almost willing to overlook the story which is just empty and has no redeeming qualities, but this film is a very poor attempt to occupy the same space of Scott Eastwood's famous father, and it doesn't even come close!
The director seems more interested in capturing wild west vistas, though the cinematography is so bad the film can't rest on that either! Way too many shots using the aerial drone too!
They do have some too talent, but too much time spent showing faces with no dialogue, which keep it from ever getting interesting. I really could find no quality in this film, except maybe the soundtrack?
It's THAT bad, not worth the time I wasted watching it! It's like a high school senior with rich parents got their son all they wanted to do their "dream" film! I can't believe the cast didn't protest the entire production!
Stowaway (2021)
No redeeming, anything...
I don't know why Netflix likes to push movies that seem pointless, beyond being just plain depressing! It would seem getting the big name stars is more important than getting a quality film, even one that would entertaining.
This film is one step above sleeping, the sets, the actors, maybe the concept, but how does a guy remain asleep behind a screwed in panel, after the launch they showed? Ok, I get it, he was in the (perfect) wrong place, screws up the carbon scrubber (a miracle in itself!), but then a cascade of everything that comes up, and we're supposed to be OK with someone committing suicide to save the others?
There's no redemption, nothing to take away from this film, nothing about right or wrong, not even any good character building, just hit, hit, dead and then it ends.
Beyond depressing, boring too! An earlier review stated "don't waste your time"; I'll give that response 10 stars!...
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Good Sci-fi, sappy story
Here comes another Clooney attempt at a serious film. It does well with the sci-fi, the set design is cool, the astronauts are diverse and professional, the special FX of the ship (the "Aether"), packed with all her parts, a new thinking in design, moving thru space, the one "action" sequence was well done, and the view of the "K-23" is,... nice...
But the story! It's a sad, sad world, huh George? There is a streak coming from him that feels it wants everyone to shed a tear. Maybe, a reflection of what's been going on, with the pandemic? Could be, but most of us want to get back to living, and I'm no fan of depressive, "oh my God, we're all going to die!" films. I know there are those who do like these, but I'd rather see movies of hope, especially because of the world that reflects at us!
IMHO...
Paradox Alice (2012)
Well, somebody green lighted it!...
A lot of, I'll say, "bigoted" responses, typical, and unwarranted.
It's science fiction kids, and not that hard to understand.
Including the creators when it comes to belief in God (of which I am one), they're take on what a god would do to repopulate the species when a gender is made suddenly extinct.
It does start out interesting enough, spaceship, crew of 4, on a mission, typical space sci-fi setup.
But it enters the weirdness when one of the men suddenly "transforms" into a woman, obviously from the writer's point of view, what a helpless god might do if "oops!", we accidentally killed off all the women; stupid! It would be more realistic if the woman on board would have been resurrected.
Simply a bad idea allowed to run amok.
Texas Cotton (2018)
Professional Entertainment!
Didn't know what to expect without A-listers and an independent film. Had me riveted! Well written story, good guys and gals were good, bad ones were bad, and the surprise at the end, make it a great movie as the definition goes.
Had the right amount of suspense, action that surprised when it wasn't expected. There were mentions in the dialogue that it was a town of simple people that were "stupid", but the writer and director gave the town's characters the benefit of the doubt. The scene in the records warehouse was a nice addition (being so massive, like a "Goliath"), no "time killers" (needless scenes of cars driving just to add or fill spaces).
A great overall package of what movie-making is, a gem in the rough; deserves more coverage! No over f-bombed language, no nudity, a film about justice, support of the image of the "Texas Lawman", a dogged investigator, simple, but nonetheless sneaky bad guys.
9 stars because, well, Star Wars it isn't, but in an industry full of overused bad language and other unnecessary filth that really isn't needed to make films seem "real", I was left with "wow! That was a great movie" when it was over!
Nice job folks!...
Rim of the World (2019)
A little rough for smaller kids, but good
Rim of the World is the name of the summer camp 3 of the 4 main characters meet (the 4th was hanging around).
In general, it's an alien invasion and these four get left behind at the camp, but by sheer accident they wind up carrying the main piece needed to defeat the aliens via earth's automated defenses; and one alien knows it, hence it becomes a chase.
The kids have to cover about 70 miles to use what they have. Along the way, as typical pre-teen movies go, they learn about life, love, respect and teamwork. With one character being a girl, there's a nice innocent love story.
The aliens are big, strong, mean, ugly, and have big teeth, and early on they establish that these creatures are not interested in making friends, so I don't believe that it's good for young (under 10) viewers, as the aliens can be very frightening; they obviously tear apart and eat their prey so you may want to put the little ones to bed before showing it.
But for pre-teens on up, it's a lot of fun! You wind up rooting for the four main characters, trying to get to the place and person to hand off the tool needed to destroy the aliens. They are still allowed to be kids, but also to unlock their inner strength and courage, and of course the affections for the boy and girl.
Once we're past how scary the aliens can be, there's little to none to offend even the most "prudish" parents, as sex does not rear its head, except for a couple of jokes, and the language is clean.
I should mention, they find a man jailed in an abandoned police station, whom they release out of kindness, and later he becomes a scary threat to them, but the alien "takes care of him", maintaining itself as the scariest character in the film.
It's safe for pre-teens on up, there is a bit of what could be called "gore", but it is never shown in great detail and is more for the purpose of getting the characters to "run!".
I gave it 8 stars, as for such good quality is story, acting and directing, plus the special FX, CGI, and for NOT making it a foul mouthed romp about sex, drugs & sex, they keep to the story and the characters are "real" and love able, and yeah, you do wind up rooting for them in the end.
Enjoy!
