Watchmen (2009)
5/10
Rather bland
9 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I really had no expectations going in. I did some preliminary research on what to expect short of actually reading the graphic novel (ie talking to friends, wikipedia, fan sites, etc). I liked the idea of more humanized superheroes, but nothing else really jumped out at me.

The beginning of the film very much caught my attention. Rorschach was a wonderfully (or should I say horribly?) interesting character and his internal dialogue was a good way to start. We are introduced to the principle characters and the alternate reality which Watchmen takes place in. All well done, especially for the casual moviegoer. The plot thickened and it looked like the film was panning out well. That was the first 30-45 minutes or so, possibly even an hour. It went by quick and was fairly enjoyable.

The next hour felt like an eternity. I think the film makers were trying to develop the characters a bit, but it was either bland or extraneous. For example, yes the Comedian was a bad dude. I get it. I don't need stupid amount of background story on the guy to understand it. I would have preferred more background on the characters who were actually alive and contributing to the plot. Dan and Sally were very superficially developed, leading their actions to seem more random than intentional. Speaking of the plot, it seemed to disappear during this middle part of the film. Rorschach beats up some prisoners and Dan and Sally sleep together and then put their costumes back on. Dan is somewhat understandable since Rorschach had recently called him out, but Sally I just can't rap my head around. Wasn't she just saying she didn't miss the life and never really wanted it in the first place? The result was a very tedious hour that culminated in soft core porn (which was so over the top I could do nothing but laugh).

Thankfully, with Rorschach's escape from prison the plot returns and rapidly develops (as does Rorschach's brilliant internal dialogue). However it just wasn't enough to rescue the film from the past hour. Perhaps I had just checked out from boredom. Perhaps it's that I don't care for the ultra-pessimistic view of human nature that Watchmen has (although I very much liked V for Vendetta which had a similar style and feel). Regardless, the end was just depressing. Some parts of the movie were enjoyable, most notably Rorschach, but overall it wasn't well done. Oh and if this movie was as true to the graphic novel as some people are saying, my guess is I wouldn't really care for that either, so I suppose the joke is on me for going in the first place.

P.S. It still kicked the crap out of that fiasco that was Spiderman III

Serenity (2005)
10/10
Excellent: Both as a Firefly Fan and as a Normal Viewer
20 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I have a rather unique view point on Serenity. You see, I work at a movie theater as a projectionist. Normally, my theater would not have gotten Serenity because our company owns two theaters in the area and movies are split between the theaters. My theaters is the "art" theater. However, we are also the ones who show open caption prints. When the open caption print of Serenity came, I had no clue what it was other than a sci-fi movie. Now as a rule I like sci-fi, but with the Star Wars pre-trilogy I've gotten somewhat of a skeptical toward it lately.

So during one of my shifts, I took a few minutes out to watch this movie. What I saw was actually fairly good. I found the dialogue to be witty and funny and the action fairly well done. So this in mind, I decided to sit down and watch the entire film before we lost the print (our theater only usually holds open caption prints for two days). When I did, I was blow away. Whedon's dialogue in Serenity is exactly what Star Wars was missing. In recent Star Wars movies, dialogue was always there just to fill in gaps between fight scenes and to explain just what the hell was going on. In Serenity, the characters talk just to talk. This adds a whole new depth to the character development that I have been greatly wanting from sci-fi for a long time.

The movie is an absolute roller coaster ride of emotions. One minute you're laugh your butt off, the next you're on the verge of crying, the next you're tight with tension. The development of characters and their interaction with each other was way above par and simply overloaded the expectation I had going in.

So after I had seen Serenity and found out that it was the continuation a canceled TV series, I made it was point to find out more. Now I had never heard of Firefly before Serenity came out, but luckily I had a few friends that had, and even owned the DVD set. I borrowed it from them and watched the series with my mother and father. Now it's one thing for me to sit down and watch 12 episodes of a TV series in a row. I can have my lazy days. However, where my PARENTS sit down and watch those 12 episode with me, you know it has to be good! Actually the only thing that stopped us from watching all 15 in one day was the fact that I had accidentally left the last DVD at my friends' house! Well, needless to say I was utterly and totally taken by this cult TV series.

I resolved to go back and see the movie again (this time knowing the back story) and made sure to bring a friend. Again, even though I knew what was coming, I loved the movie. The characters progress and grew and the storyline of Firefly was advanced. This is what is driving me crazy about Lost right now: the story line is not advancing. Serenity clearly and definitely moved the storyline forward, and I am dying for more! As a side note (oh and *SPOILER*) I was not every sad when Wash died, but once I had seen Firefly, I was horrified that they killed such as wonderful character off!

Rome (2005–2007)
Wonderful for history buffs and common viewers alike!
29 August 2005
Even though there has been only one episode so far, I have to say that "Rome" looks to be the best production of ancient Rome I have seen yet. Yes, Gladiator was a cool movie, but it lacked was historical accuracy. "Rome" has brought together what no one though possible: historical accuracy and good production. Octavian is an snide little wimp, but with political brilliance. Marc Antony is an arrogant and drunken man who has a love for brutality. Caesar is cunning and insightful. It's all there! The costuming is great, the dialog is crisp, the character interaction spot on and the plot flows smoothly. What more could you want!? This series is far and above that ABC knock-off "Empire", which couldn't even get Roman troops in proper costume. Every penny of this record-budget ($12 million for 12 episodes I think) series was well spent.
