Spinning Plates (2012)
Three very different restaurant chef owners who have a huge passion for cooking describe their struggles that have overcome to keep their restaurants alive.
This is everything that you would want in a food-based documentary for both foodies and non- foodies alike. It feels authentic and real without being harsh or brazen. As the film unfolds, you get a good sense of who these restaurant owners/chefs are not just as business owners but also as fellow people struggling to keep their dreams alive.
It is refreshing also to see that these restaurant owners belong to completely different demographics, having experienced completely different obstacles so that most viewers could relate to at least one of them.
The focus on the food and the kitchen gives a look into each of these chefs approaches to applying a mixture of their hard work and heart into their culinary creations. Though they are all different, all the delectable food definitely entices and intrigues and will make your mouth water.
Watch this and it won't disappoint, even for those who are not typically interested in documentaries.
Greenlit (2010)
An honest and personal documentary about integrating "green" protocol in the filmmaking process
With the huge trend of "going green" among individual members of the entertainment industry and in Hollywood, Miranda Bailey goes one step further in trying to apply this environmentally- friendly mentality to a film production.
Though the steps to accomplishing a green film seem feasible, actually imposing them turn out to be more difficult than expected. In the hectic fast-paced environment of on-set production, the crew seemed frustrated to take the conservational measures agreed upon. They saw them more as a hindrance than a help, which shows how most people think about taking these steps.
However, the fact that the crew did make more of an effort and did decrease their environmental waste was inspiring and encouraging. After seeing this movie, you will be convinced that being a little more attentive and making little changes in everyday habits will end up making a difference.
A.C.O.D. (2013)
An adult who has divorced parents must deal with them reuniting in the midst of his brother's engagement
This film surprised me a lot. Looking at the main poster and advertisements for this, I thought this would be more of an in-your-face, laugh out loud funny movie. But it takes a different turn, being more of a drama than comedy.
That being said, I think that it balances the two genres very well. The humor, more subtle and realistic, adds just the right amount of lightheartedness to the relatable subject matter. Casting was pretty on the dot too.
Only thing that kept me from giving it a higher rating are the few scenes in the film that didn't really seem necessary.
Overall though, it was really enjoyable and entertaining. I would definitely watch it again.
