Race (2016)
A solid inspirational biopic about one of the greatest track runners in history.
Race is a film that delivers solid acting and an inspirational story.
The story of Jessie Owens, {Stephan James} A natural born track runner who enters the 1936 Olympics where he is faced by Adolf Hitler's vision of white supremacy in Nazi, Germany.
The film does a solid job portraying the life of Jessie Owens and the direction by Stephen Hawks is also solid, The rest of the cast including Jeremy Irons and William Hurt also do a good job, The film's racial themes and message is delivered in a inspiring way.
Race is a well made film that excels by Stephan James's performance and it's message. 7/10
Deadpool (2016)
Funny, Raunchy and Action-Packed, Deadpool is a triumph from beginning to end.
From the studio that brought the x-men franchise comes a different type of superhero film that delivers with a bang.
Wade Wilson {Ryan Reynolds} is subjected to an experiment that destroys his face, Now he wants revenge while going by the altar-ego Deadpool.
Ryan Reynolds is truly the creative force behind this film as he seems to pull off deadpool naturally and with a great sense of humor, Tim Miller's direction is also great as he mixes comic book aspects with raunchy comedy, The rest of the cast does a very good job also and the inside jokes are very well crafted.
Deadpool is a different type of comic book film that isn't afraid to be raunchy and adult-rated and also exceeds as a action-comedy. 9/10
Hail, Caesar! (2016)
An interesting and funny satire of 1950s Hollywood by the coen brothers.
The coen brother have delivered another intriguing and strange film that pays homage to classic Hollywood from the 1950s.
An Hollywood boss {Josh Brolin} tries to bring back a big movie star {George Clooney} while dealing with many other problems.
The direction from the coen brothers is straight forward and the dialogue is slick as usual for a coen brothers film, The film's ensemble cast led by Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenrich, Ralph Fiennes and Scarlett Johansson deliver stellar performances.
Hail Caesar is another good film from the coen brothers while it may not be one of their best. 6/10
The Finest Hours (2016)
A truly great story executed poorly by wooden acting, dialogue and a dragging pace.
The finest hours is a film based off an incredible true story, But the film itself is not so incredible.
Based off a daring coast guard rescue mission, The film tells the story of Bernie Webber {Chris Pine} who sets out to save a group of people on a sinking ship.
The direction by Craig Gillespie fails to bring justice to the real life incident and the pace is just awful, The cast led by Chris Pine and Casey Affleck seem to be sleep walking through the film, The only things i liked about it was some of the effects and some of the score.
The film poorly tells what happened in an ineffective way and i rather watch a documentary about what happened. 3/10
The Boy (2016)
A creepy and decent horror film that features more mystery than anything else.
The Boy is a film directed by William brent bell and it is a decent horror film that has a lot of nerving mystery to it.
An American nanny {Lauren Cohn} comes to an old home in England to care for a 8 year old boy who turns out to be a life-sized doll, When she breaks several of the rules given to her horrific things begin to happen.
The direction by William brent bell is done well and he brings a lot of tension and mystery to the film, Lauren Cohn and Rupert Evans deliver decent performances, The great thing about this film is it is more heavy on mystery than mindless jump scares and gory violence.
Overall the boy is much better than I thought it was going to be and it proves that decent horror films can still be made. 6/10
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016)
A generic film where the subject matter should have been handled better!
13 Hours: The secret soldiers of Benghazi is a film that recounts the 2012 attack on Benghazi that feels a lot like a run of the mill Michael Bay film.
Based off the book of the same name, The film recounts the events of September 11, 2012 when an American ambassador is killed by terrorists and a group of soldiers try to fight for their base.
The direction of Michael Bay feels like his typical blockbuster approach and it seems to be more action than substance and the cast seem to do a mediocre job with clinched acting and dialogue, The one thing the film does very well is the brutality of the attack that really represents what really happened.
Overall 13 hours would have been a lot better if the right director did the film but Michael Bay just doesn't seem like telling a real life event is his strong point. 5/10
The Revenant (2015)
A haunting and pulse-pounding survival thriller with a powerful performance by Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Revenant is a film that draws you into it's world without much dialogue and more atmosphere and tension.
A hunter named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) ends up being mulled by a bear and he fights alone in the woods to stay alive.
The film has terrific direction and writing by director Alejangro Gonzalez Inarritu and the cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy are fantastic especially the lead roles by DiCaprio and Hardy, The film's score is very haunting and eerie at times, The violence is very well done and very graphic.
Overall the film is a powerful tale of survival and this might be DiCaprio's Oscar gold here. 9/10
The Hateful Eight (2015)
A great film by taratino that delivers great acting, dark humor and bloody violence!!
The Hateful Eight is the eighth film by Quentin Tarantino and it proves to be another masterful work from him.
The film centers around two bounty hunters one played by Samuel L. Jackson and the other played by Kurt Russell, A mayor played by Walton Goggins and a prisoner played by Jennifer Jason-Leigh who end up in a cabin during the winter with other characters, Things start to get very hateful.
Tarantino's direction in this film is once again spot on as he proves his craft again with dark humor terrific characters and cleaver dialogue, The cast led by Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Bruce Dern do an amazing job and their characters are interesting and funny.
However if you are not into bloody violence and Tarantino's style then this is not recommended for you, Overall The Hateful Eight is an engaging comedy-western film that proves to be another win for Quentin Tarantino. 9/10
Joy (2015)
A OK film with a brilliant performance by jennifer lawrence
Joy is an uneven biopic that never seems to pick up pace but is greatly benefited by an outstanding performance from Jennifer Lawrence.
Joy is a biopic about joy mangano, A woman who rises to power when she creates the miracle mop and builds an empire.
The film itself seems to have an uneven tone with a lot of pace problems and the direction and writing by David o'russell seems to lack sometimes, The cast that includes Robert Deniro, Bradley Cooper, Virginia Madsen and Isabella Rosanelli do a stellar job but Jennifer Lawrence really proves once again why she is one of the best young actresses working today as she immerses herself into the role of joy mangano and I would not be surprised if she won her second Oscar for this role.
Overall joy is an OK film that lags in parts but is ultimately saved by Lawrence's performance. 7/10
Ant-Man (2015)
A very entertaining and family-friendly heist film from marvel!!
Ant-man is another stellar installment in the marvel cinematic universe which is much different from it's avengers style films and much smaller in scale and pace.
Convicted convict Scott Lang {Paul Rudd} seeks redemption by helping Dr Hank Pym {Michael Douglas} and his daughter Hope van Dyke {Evageline Lilly} pull off a daring heist and prevent Pym's former protégé Darren Cross {Corey Stoll} from using the ant-man technology to unleash chaos.
The film is thoroughly entertaining throughout and very funny, Director Peyton Reed does a stellar job with the direction of the film and the cast is also great too, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/ant-man is very charismatic and hilarious as the titular protagonist, Michael Douglas is amazing as Dr Hank Pym who delivers a very intriguing and deep performance, Evageline Lilly is also great as hank's daughter hope van Dyke, Corey Stoll is quite good as a psychotic villain, Michael Pena is very funny as Scott's best friend Louis, Overall ant-man is a fun and complex different entry to the marvel universe with solid acting, writing and direction highly recommended 8/10.
Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
My favorite film in the series!!
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 is a fantastic follow-up to the classic 1987 horror film, I found myself enjoying it a bit more than the first one.
The film starts off by showing the origins of the lead cenobite pinhead Doug Bradley where he use to be captain Elliot Spencer who solved the box during world war 1 and transformed into pinhead where all his memory is erased, We than see Kirsty Ashley Laurence who is traumatized after the events of the first film, She is placed in a mental institution that is run by Dr Channard Kenneth Cranham who is obsessed with the lament configuration, He resurrects Julia Claire Higgins and they use a young girl named Tiffany who solves puzzles and solves the box to unleash pinhead and the cenobites, They are sucked into their world and Kirsti befriends tiffany and goes looking for her father.
Hellbound is a more complicated film than the first one but what makes it stand out from the first one is Ashley Laurence's performance as Kirsti cotton, She was my favorite character from the original and she is now the central character in this film, She is a very strong presence, Also the whole scope of the film is more epic than the first one.
Overall Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 is a strong sequel and highly recommended!!
Hellraiser (1987)
A Gothic horror classic!!
Hellraiser is a film that strays from the usual horror slasher craze of that time and delves deep into Gothic horror, Sadomastic torture and a truly terrifying look into hell.
The film tells the story of a man named frank cotton who opens a mysterious puzzle box and is immediately torn apart by Pinhead and the cenobites, His brother Larry and his wife Julia move into his old house and it is revealed that she had an affair with frank and when Larry ends up cutting his hand, Blood start dripping down and brings frank back as a rotting corpse, Julia helps Larry rebuild himself before the cenobites find out he escaped, Larry's daughter kirsty finds out what is going on and now must stop frank and the cenobites who are now after kirsty.
The acting isn't the best but is good overall, Andrew Robinson is good as Larry and Claire Higgins is great as Julia, The performance of Ashely Laurence as kirsty is really great and a very likable character, Doug Bradley as pinhead the lead cenobite is very intense and creepy and perhaps his best performance in the franchise next to bloodline.
The special effects are top notch and show how powerful practical effects can be, Overall hellraiser is a classic horror film and my second favorite in the series behind hellbound, Highly recommended!!
