Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
It pains me to see the rating so low, and to see so many negative reviews and comments.
Man, I haven't thought about this movie in a very long time. But I always thoroughly enjoyed Eight Legged Freaks when it came out. A friend and myself went to see it in theaters when we were in high school, and we always joked about it for years to come, because we both shared the same sense of humor, so we enjoyed quirky movies like this. It is by no means some masterfully made movie with a deep plot, or anything like that. But it is a really fun movie, that has many moments that incite laughter. Like I said though, it's not some masterpiece of comedy, or film making in general, and requires you to not read into the movie too much to where you start picking out things that don't make sense left and right. So if you are incapable of just turning off your brain for an hour and a half to simply enjoy a light hearted, quirky movie with some dumb humor, then Eight Legged Freaks is probably not for you lol. But if you enjoy movies with such elements, give it a shot if you have never done so in the last 20 years since it was released haha, because I bet you will enjoy it.
10 Years (2011)
Great movie, seriously underrated.
This movie is seriously under appreciated, and not nearly as well known as it deserves. Any time I have ever brought something from this movie up in the past around friends or something like that, no one has ever even heard of this movie, let alone actually having seen it lol. Which, in my opinion, is just such a shame, as it is a fantastic movie with an all-star cast. Like really, Chris Pratt, Oscar Isaacs, Channing Tatum, Justin Long, Anthony Mackie, Rosario Dawson, Scott Porter, Jenna Dewan, Kate Mara, Aubrey Plaza, Lynn Collins, Aaron Yoo, and a few others who aren't quite as well known. Its a really fun movie with plenty of laughs throughout. I was actually surprised that I had never heard of it a few years back when I just happened to stumble onto it while trying to find something new to watch. It really seems like this movie was never even really promoted prior to, or after it's release. Which is crazy to me. Like why the hell would you not promote a movie like this with so many great, well known actors in it? Makes no sense to me that's for sure. If you haven't seen it, do so, and you will not regret it.
Dopesick (2021)
Great show, although there is one, idk, flaw, I guess I would say that I dislike.
So overall I think it's a great show, that does a fantastic job of showing/chronicling the opiate epidemic that exists in the US to this day. It pulls no punches in showing exactly how opioid painkillers directly ruined the lives of so many people, as well as directly led to the deaths of 500,000+ people in the years since Purdue Pharma released, and fraudulently marketed Oxycontin as a safe, non-addictive painkiller to doctors all over the country, caring only about how much money they made off of selling as much OxyContin as they possibly could. They did not care about ruined lives, or people who died as a direct result of their fraudulent marketing strategies. They cared only about how much money they could make, and as one of those people myself, who were duped by their lies, and got addicted to OxyContin after a car accident left me with debilitating back pain and it was prescribed to me by my doctor, this whole series really hits home for me. I can only be thankful that I was one of the lucky ones who were able to get off of that poison before I too just ended up as another statistic in the death column of those who lost their lives to opiates/opioids. Unfortunately I've had many friends that weren't so lucky, who did die because of them.
That being said, there was one aspect of the show that I did not like, and that is the way they chose to about telling the story. The story takes place of the course of many years, and instead of telling the story as a linear progression, like most shows and stories, they for some reason chose to have the story be told by bouncing around between years. For instance, showing scenes that happened in 1996, then jumping forward to 2006 for a few scenes, and then jumping back to the 90's again. And they do this in every single episode, to the point where sometimes it is very difficult to keep up with when in the story certain events are taking place. I found myself on more than a few occasions, having to rewind in order to check what year certain events were taking place because of how difficult it can be to keep track of dates due to the odd choice of portraying the story that way, instead of the normal, linear progression that is used in normal story telling. I really don't understand the point of chosing to do things the way that they did. Doesn't make much sense to me, and as I stated, can become really annoying and frustrating. But I'm not saying that it's not a good show, because it is, but it just can just be hard to follow in my opinion.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Obvious elements taken from other sci-fi movies of this nature, but still a great movie, imoz
Like my title states, there are elements of this movie that are very clearly taken from and inspired by other sci-fi movies of this nature, but to me that doesn't take away from what this movie gets right. It's got action, good humor and suspense, while also bringing some new ideas with the anatomy and behavior of the white spikes, and as far as time travel goes, it does pretty well too without getting all crazy and complicated. The score is fantastic imo, and does agreat job in upping the suspense level. Not to mention the CGI is actually really good as well. Are there flaws, sure, absolutely, just like nearly every movie in existence. But if you can sit down and enjoy a movie for just the fun and action packed thing it's supposed to be, I would Definitely recommend checking it out.
Good Joe Bell (2020)
Not amazing, but solid nonetheless, with a spectacular performance.....
So I put that this contains spoilers, but In my opinion, they arent really even spoilers if you know even the very basics about Joe and Jadin Bell's stories in general, as at the time, their stories became pretty well know. But if you are someone who has never heard of them or their stories, then yea, some spoilers ahead.
Let me start off by saying that this isn't some insanely fantastic film by any means, but it is a good movie nonetheless, about the problem that bullying is in today's society, especially in schools. Bullying is responsible for many kids taking their own lives, or doing other drastic things, like school shootings due to all the built up anger and frustration, because they just couldn't take it any more, especially when they ask for help and essentially do not receive any of the help that they so desperately needed. I too was bullied growing up. Not for the same reasons that Jadin Bell was, but bullied nonetheless, and when you have so many of your peers telling you that you are a worthless loser, or fat, or gay, etc, it can become a lot to deal with, and after a while of the constant abuse, you start to actually question whether the bullies are right about you or not. Are you a worthless loser? Do you deserve the torment because you are gay? It can lead someone down a very dark path that unfortunately, way too often results in the person just deciding to end it all because they can't take it any more. It's a real shame too, because you never know what these kids could have grown up to be if they weren't tormented, or if they actually received the help that they asked for and needed. And this movie does a good job of showcasing that topic, and what it can do to the families of these kids as well. What stands out for me the most about this film is the honestly powerful performance given by Reid Miller as Jadin Bell. Watching this I couldn't help but wonder why this kid hasn't Booked A LOT more movies, or even tv series of some sort. This is the only thing I've seen him in, but from this movie alone he seems like he has some real talent, with a bright future as an actor. I see absolutely no reason at all why he wouldn't be having roles thrown at him left and right, from all corners of the film and tv industry lol. If this kids career doesnt take off after this movie gets around to all of Hollywood, then there is some crazy nonsense going on within the industry that needs to be looked into for sure. If not for his performance, I probably would have given this movie a 4 or 5 star rating, but with the powerful performance that Reid Miller gave, I rightfully bumped it up a few starts. Mark Wahlberg is his usual talented self of course, but his isn't the stand out performance in this movie in my opinion. That distinction, as I've basically said this entire review, goes to Reid Miller. Hopeful to see much more of his work in the future. Kid deserves it.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Great move. Teen Wolf fans should def give it a go.
This is a fantastic movie. It's got a lot to like. Humor, action, drama, creative monster creatures that would result from a mutating of all the cold blooded creatures on the planet, plot twists, the works. It's just an all around fun, feel good movie. Dylan O'Brien is awesome, as always, in the authenticity and likability he brings to the role. The thing that struck me about it, is that, for Teen Wolf fans, this movie is basically what would happen if Stiles Stilinski had to travel through a land of monsters trying to kill him in order to reach the girl he loves haha. O'Brien is basically playing Stiles, IN that setting, except his name is Joel. Name is different, but the personality and way he acts is on point Stiles haha And as expected, O'Brien kills it in that kind of role. He was one of the best things on Teen Wolf, and he's one of the best things about this movie. So if you were a fan of O'Brien as Stiles on Teen Wolf, I cannot see how you wouldn't like this movie. But even if you're not familiar with his work on Teen Wolf, you should definitely check this movie out.it doesn't disappoint. Definitely give it a watch.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Really?
For the life of me I cannot understand how on Earth this movie has a rating as high as it does. It's boring, and hard to follow what the hell is even going on. I personally believe the 4 stars I gave it is being generous. Way overrated.
Ancient Aliens Debunked (2012)
Interesting and informative, but there's a problem.
While it is a good documentary that counters many of the claims made by ancient aliens, with usually clear and concise arguments, I have a serious issue with some of it as well. Because he spends the entire run time arguing the idea of ancient aliens, saying how it's preposterous and not realistic, and yet, attributes all the points to what exactly? Like with ancient texts and the annunaki for example. If these ancient texts weren't speaking of aliens, but actual deities, and if the annunaki weren't extraterrestrials, but deities, then he is saying that the idea of aliens is ridiculous, but that the idea of actual gods is just totally believable and is what the ancient civilizations were referring to? haha. Which I'm sorry, but is even more absurd than if they were aliens. Aliens are much more plausible than actual gods and deities.
Tiny Creatures (2020)
Great show, but I must admit, a bit confused....
So I really enjoy this show, but I have to admit, I must be missed something, as I just do not understand how the hell they bet the footage that they get lol. The show is shot in such a way that makes I seem as though these animals were being directed and coached haha. So I don't understand how they have actually put it together. But none the less, fantastic show indeed. Definitely worth checking out.
Underwater (2020)
Don't listen to the haters.
Seriously, don't listen to all the haters who bash this movie. I personally don't understand them, as I think this is an awesome movie. Is it totally original, or a piece of cinematic gold, no, it's not. It definitely borrows many themes from past films of similar stories of its kind, but it also includes new twists and what not within those borrowed themes. But it's a fun, creepy, suspenseful movie that kept me engaged in it the entire run time. Its even got some pretty good humor mixed in there as well. Like I said, it's not some amazingly smart and original piece of storytelling, but that doesn't just automatically make it a bad movie by a long shot. Like I stated, I personally really enjoy this movie and have watched it several times and do not understand all the hate it gets. So I say if you are deciding whether or not to watch it, don't listen to all the naysayers. Watch it, and decide for yourself.
Spies in Disguise (2019)
Good Enough for what it is.
Pretty good movie for what it is. The trailers actually made it seem better than it is, but it definitely has some good laughs. However, it didn't quite live up to my expectations of what I was expecting. But ya gotta love the fact that Ben MendelSohn as the quintessential villain haha. He just seems like everyone's go to actor is they want a villain these days. Even animation movies haha.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Good, but doesn't live up to BB Standards.
Let me start off by stating that this is a good movie. Aaron Paul's acting, as always, is excellent to say the least, and it was awesome to see him back in his iconic role of Jesse Pinkman. Also great to see some of the old familiar faces of the series again as well, and to see what exactly became of Jesse after his escape from his time as a slave cook that we saw at the end of the series. So obviously, and understandably, I went in to this with VERY high expectations, I went in with Breaking Bad level expectations, which in hindsight may have caused an issue, because while as I stated it's a good movie. It's not great or phenomenal in the way that BB consistently was. It didnt have that same suspense, drama, and edge that the series was so well known for in my opinion, and didn't pull me in the same way either. Like I mentioned, it's great to see what happened to Jesse after his escape and get some real closure, but at the same time I don't feel as though this actually did the character complete justice. I think it could have been a lot better and more intriguing if I'm being honest. Breaking Bad always had me on the edge of my seat and on my toes, constantly guessing and speculating what crazy s*** was going to happen next. El Camino didn't do that for me. I found it much more predictable and lackluster. I truly don't recall even one single moment in the entire 2 hours in which I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen next. Which is a total 180 from how BB was, where I was constantly being shocked and surprised when crazy s*** went down. Don't get me wrong, because like I said, it is still a good movie. But if you go in to it looking for that same thrill that BB gave you week after week, if you are anything like me, you are probably going to be disappointed if I'm being honest, because I was definitely let down at the overall quality.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
Good for what it is.
Reading through other reviews, I feel the need to point something out. I come across reviews, saying such things as "ridiculous", or "How insulting", and I cant help but laugh. I'm sorry... you were expecting what? A riveting drama on the accuracies, and precise story telling that was Abraham Lincoln's life? Its called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, for Christ sake. Its not suppose to be a realistic anything.
For what this movie is, an action/sci-fi take on a pivotal point in American history, its a good movie. Not great, but good, and entertaining. It just amazes me that people put down this movie, because of how ridiculous of a concept that it is. I just cant help but wonder what they were expecting going into watching it.
Coherence (2013)
Surprisingly good
Although the trailer peeked my interest, I didn't go into this movie with high expectations, being that it is a low budget film with actors you don't see to much. But I couldn't have been more wrong.
The movie has good writing, dialog, all around great acting, and keeps you interested with nice twists throughout the movie. Another thing I liked about it, was the fact that they don't spend unnecessary amounts of time getting into the actual story. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes tops. It also has a storyline that is pretty original in my opinion. Yea, certain little things could be associated with other movies, but overall its an original idea. Sci-Fi movies these days tend to have so many similarities, that when a movie like this comes along, its refreshing to see something new.
Drive (2011)
Terribly boring, Appalling film.
It seriously baffles me that this movie has a 7.8 rating. It is quite possibly one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. The plot is terrible, it drags on for what seems like hours on end, and I could not even take Ryan Gosling serious as "Driver". And I say it like that, because they didn't even give him a real name.
"Yea, lets just call him Driver the whole movie"....So dumb.
The whole movie consists of ridiculously cheesy lines, and plot points that just make no sense. Almost all of the actors are just unbelievable as their characters. Ryan Gosling tries to pull of this whole tuff guy persona, and fails miserably in my opinion.
How this movie is so well liked, that it received the rating it has, I will never understand. If I had paid to go see this, I would have been very angry.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Unexpectedly bad.
The fact that this movie has a 7.0 rating, baffles the hell out of me. I went in to this movie with fairly high expectations, because it had relatively high ratings, and the trailer made it look as if it would be a good movie. Boy was I wrong. So much of the movie makes no sense, that it borders on comedic. I know there are some people who would say, "its a Sci-fi movie, it's not supposed to be completely realistic'. But it isn't just the realistic world facts being so completely ridiculous. Its the choices the characters make, and the major plot holes, that make the movie bad. There are so many moments throughout the movie that leave you just scratching your head, saying "huh?'.
Instead of going through every moment like that, which would take more than I care to write, I will just give one example. The whole movie is centered around the fact that the world is too cold for humans to survive in, so the people on this train are all that is left of humanity. Many times throughout the movie, they touch upon this fact, and even go as far as to point out, as the train is passing a specific point on its round trip, a group of people that jumped off the train like a decade earlier, and only made it a few hundred yards before freezing to death in the places they were standing. Also making the audience simply disregard the fact that after a decade of constant snowfall, these people are still somehow visible, and not covered by snow....Yea OK. Then, after a 2 hour movie, where over and over they stress that if you leave the train, you will die, Chris Evans character, basically makes a decision to destroy the train, killing almost everyone that is on it(which as I said, is all that is left of humanity), in order to save one child from forced labor. So that the child he saved, and one woman, which is all that survived, could then venture out into the cold...to die anyway..? You also have to sit through the entire movie, having basically nothing explained to you. You are given virtually no explanations for things that should be explained, for the movie/plot to make sense. I.e., they mention over and over that the train can run forever, but never once mention how it works, or why that is possible.
This movie, to me, had potential, and could have been good, but just failed on so many levels. That's not to say the acting is bad, because it isn't. The acting is on par, and it has a cast that is very talented, but a talented cast is not enough to make a movie good. The storyline and writing have to be good as well. And it just isn't. So unless you are the type of person who can sit down, and turn your brain completely off for the duration of a movie, I would stay away from this one.
Supernatural: Do You Believe in Miracles (2014)
Wow. Amazing episode but not as surprised as everyone else seems to be.
OK, so this episode was amazing. It really brought back the whole tone of the show that I love, that has been missing the last few seasons. With the exception of the majority of this season, because overall, season 9 was a big improvement. I love the direction they chose to take the show, moving in to season 10. That being said, I was not at all shocked or surprised when Dean's eyes opened revealing he was now a demon. But in reading other reviews, and talking to people, it seems as though not many people saw this coming. Which to me, being a supernatural fan, how could you not? All the signs were there that Dean was changing, and there was really only one direction he could have been going. I saw this coming from the moment Dean first held the first blade, and had my suspicions from the moment Cain gave Dean the mark. But the moment in my head where I thought, "yep, he's turning into a demon", was when Dean looked down at the burger, said he wasn't hungry, and Crowley had that look in his eye as if he knew why. But even fully suspecting what was coming, this episode was awesome. All the acting was spot on, as it usually is, and the way things went down in heaven I thought was great. Although part of me was hoping that they would kill Metatron, and that would somehow restore heaven, and give the angels their wings back, but no such luck. I'm interested in seeing how that whole situation plays out in season 10 though. Overall, great episode, and great ending to an awesome season that reminded me why I love this show so much.
