PK (2014)
An eccentric man PK curiously searching god in the city
A much needed slap on the faces of some self proclaimed gods and the agents of gods. All credits to Rajkumar Hirani for presenting such an inflammable subject in a hilarious way. I always had great admiration towards this guy for his intellectual thought which he often blends up with some waggish way of story telling. All his movies had some messages and it's completely up to the audience whether to just relish the odd two plus hours or to go to the depth of script and dig up the message fossilized in it.
Performance wise, it was Aamir all the way. Yet again he emphasized why he is knowing as the perfectionist of Bollywood. Yeah, it was one hell of a performance. Eccentric at the same time emotive. The way he synchronized with bhojpuri language really astonished me. Anushka was good as usual. Rest of the casts comprising Boman Irani, Sanjay Dutt, Saurabh Shukla etc etc did a neat job as well. On technical part, the DOP was outstanding and tickling BGM really could buzz the experience more. Songs were strictly average, in fact none could gain my heed.
I strongly recommending this movie to each and every member out here since the relevance of this script is too damn high in current social scenarios . Some of the questions asked by PK really could quiver my intellectual thoughts. And end of the day PK became my one of the favorite character for his innocence and adorable curiosity.
Swapaanam (2014)
"Swapaanam" - "The Voiding Soul"
Yet another gem from the master craftsman of Malayalam cinema. Having seen his two previous meticulously brilliant ventures "Vanaprastham and Kuttisrank" I was so confident in him and wanted to watch it right from the day it was announced one more reason was there for me to grab seat was nothing other than the art called "Chenda Melam" Being a big fan of that art(Be it Paandi, Panchari or Thayambaka) I wanted to catch the seat first day itself but could not fulfill that wish due to some personal problem. However got the chance today and must say it was an out of world experience for me.
As I said before, those who have watched his previous ventures would certainly have an idea about his style of making. "Unique and precise" that is what Shaji Sir is all about. If the commercial films have high pitched BGM's and noisy aspects to convey the story shaji sir always opted a benevolent way to express it. You got to give complete care to the each and every scenes else u'll fail to engross the soul of the movie and that curious case is again happened here. Seriously loved his style and apparently fell in love with the BGM and cinematography. brilliant to the core and it could give us a hysterical feeling. If you talk about another technical expertise I felt the editing could have done better. Length of the movie was really a concern for me. still the above said BGM n stimulating visuals dint allow me to go bored. All the "Chenda Melam" scenes captured brilliantly especially the climax one. Loved the songs especially "Maadhava Maasamo...". And movie gave me chance to watch how "Chanda" can sweetly collaborate with amour art "Mohiniyattam". That was one fresh scene indeed.
Coming to the cast. Must say it is the career best for Jayaram. His love and affection towards the art was evident in most of the scenes. He could give 100% of his abilities to make the "chenda melam"s more effectual. Never felt any artificiality and thats indeed one reason for me to like his acting. As a mohanlal Fan I felt it would have been awesome to see, Lalettan doing this role(Yeah u can take it as the selfishness of fan). But Jayaram did a fabulous job and indeed deserve many acknowledgments and hopefully he will attain all those in coming days. Many of the people in here were not so happy with the lead actress's performance but she was fine at least for me. Lookd pathetic in some scenes but definitely deserve an applause considering the experience she has. Another man to be quoted is none other than the ever stable "Siddique" man!! what an actor he is. For me he is the next generation Murali and now I have all reasons to concrete my thought. Simply stole the show as Narayanan Namoothiri aka vattu namboothiri. Support casts comprise of Vineeth, Indrans, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, PD namboothiri did a fine job. Sharath looked atrocious with his moustache and looked younger to lakshmi gopala swamy and must a complete miscast. All other who have worked before and behind the camera did so well and gave us a staggering cine experience.
Before winding up the I request all those who yet to watch this magniloquent stuff please don't wait for the CD or DVD and try to watch it in theater itself to know the brilliance of Shaji Sir. Even though this can't be tagged as the best of Shaji sir but definitely an worth a watch in theater.
P.S : New generation Kids please stay away from the theater where it runs because later I don't want to hear that "Amal Neerad is a better Director than shaji n karun" kinda atrocious things from you.
Dil Se.. (1998)
"Dil Se" - Unconventional Conjunction of Love and Music
One of the most stylish and substantially crafted movies of last century. When some great names in the industry put up their efforts together, we got to see a profligately awesome cine experience. Moreover a movie "Dil Se" is a poem. Pure blend of music and romance which explains seven various phases of Love. Happened to see it again last night for "N"th time yet it had the freshness. Like previous times, I really relished each and every moment of the movie this time too. Everyone in this forum knows the wave created by "Dil Se" among Indian youths when it released in 1998.
Now, Coming to the direction and another technical aspects of the movie. Manirathnam is so known for his technical brilliance and flabbergasting directional suaveness and yeah, he did not disappoint anyone. It was absolutely an enchanting experience for me to go through this wonderfully fabricated movie once again. Like his previous ventures "Roja" and "Bombay" this movie also depicts human relationships against a background of Indian politics and military. Dil Se was shot in Himachal, Kashmir, Assam, Delhi, Kerala, and other parts of India and Bhutan over a period of 55 days and its so much evident that how much strain he would have taken to encapsulate all the obligatory things to make his movie an emphatic one. For many this may not be the best of Manirathnam but it definitely owns an unique style and theme. Music department by Gulzar and ARR I think I don't need to say more. Celestial by all means. What makes Dil Se songs so remarkable is "Chaiyya chaiyya," one of the most exhilarating musical sequences in all of cinema, in which the romantic leads dance on top of an actual moving train that winds precariously along a mountain path. Eventually "Chaiyya chaiyya" unanimously selected as one of the top ten songs of all time in an international poll conducted by BBC. As usual there are few malayalis also sharing the credits in this whimsy stuff. The malayalam parts in the song "Jiya Jale" were written by our very own ever stable Gireesh Puthencherry and sung by MG Sreekumar. All other songs were too good n still holds predominant position in my list of favorites.
Yet another element in which we "Malayalis" can be proud of is Cinematography. Awesome frames by Santosh SIvan furnished the movie more astounding. Each frames could easily convey what really director meant.Without him It would have been an ordinary experience for me. I am pretty impressed with the way he captured the song "CHAIYYA CHAIYYA" and "dil se re". Other technical aspects like audiography and BGM did impressed many critics as well. At times I forgot about the screenplay and totally allied with magical BG score by ARR. I should say he simply stole the show. On a negative note I am not that impressed with the performance of the lead as well as supporting actors. Did not feel the ingenuity in SRK's acting. Lack of versatility definitely effected him in this movie big time. And yeah it was just an okay performance from Manisha as well. Initially Maniratnam planned to cast Simran as Preeti Nair but she apparently stepped back and he opted Preeti Zinta. She was the only relief for me as far as the performance is concerned. In fact I don't expect any débutante to play something exceptional on screen so neither did she, still loved the charm and cuteness of Preeti and that really enraptured the experience. None of the supporting artists had to do anything remarkable and all of them went unnoticed.
It is really sad that movie failed to create an impact in BO even though the movie had its own flavors to tremble every records. Not the first time we are witnessing something like this In fact we are quite used to it. In the current scenario "Dil Se" would have been a mighty hit since now a days some baseless, obnoxious movies collecting billions and trillions. No matter its a hit or bombed "Dil Se" is one of my favorite and it always will be. This might be the only movie I like not because of lead actors but the awesomeness of those who worked behind the camera, is what sticks me to "Dil Se". "Dil Se" always will be in my "Dil Mein
Drishyam (2013)
Drishyam - "Visuals Can be deceiving"
Venue : Grans Safeer Cinemas, Abu Dhabi Status : 90%
And here we go. Finally got chance to watch the much appreciated movie of the year "Drishyam". I was literally dying to watch ever since I started to see overwhelming response from the people all around the world. Now "Drishyam" is completely a director's movie. Thank god for giving me a chance to watch it in theater. Years later when our next generation asks us about this movie we can proudly say, we were alive when it released and watched it on big screen. It was one of the finest cinematic experience for me in recent years. Really relished each and every moment of this seat edge thriller.
As I said before "Drishyam" is completely a Director's movie. Jeethu Joseph indeed stole the show with some staggering efforts. He had tremendous control over the script and it never slipped away from his hands. Thank you for giving back the old endearing Lalettan. It was really a mesmerizing to see some enchanting naughty expressions on his face after a long time(Will get back to his performance later on). I have no other words to describe Jeethu's masterful effort. Awesome. Magical script and spot on direction is what the pivotal thing of this movie. You really nailed 2013 with two outstanding movies of the year. First half was just watchable for me but as the movie progressed i understood that, that was the only way they could build up this story. What can I say about climax. Damn!!!! Phenomenal by all means. full credits to jeethu. Bowing my heads down man!!! Coming to the cinematography GicKu JaCob PeTer Kudos mate!!!(Y) u and Ur Boss have done a fabulous job expecting more fantabaulous frames from u guys in future. Songs were pretty ordinary. In fact I could not give much attention to the songs since i was so eager to know what would happen in the climax. Casting was so unerring(Forget all the fuss happened regarding the casting). Editing was fine and dint feel any lag at any point of time. Lalettan looked so cool with his outfit.
Now, Coming to the Big name of the movie "Lalettan". Uff!! what to say. Gotta see that vintage Lalettan on screen in many frames. Some naughty expressions really stole my heart. Thanku jeethu for giving lalettan this opportunity for his aristocratic return to the buzz world Meena was perfect as his better half. Arguably the best movie of this pair. Kids were so awesome. Ansiba Hassan did a fine performance. But "Esther" did overshadow Ansiba in many scenes. She definitely has a good future. Forget the lead role and everything, Oh yeah!! Kalabhavan shajon!!! "MIND BLOWING" effort from him. This could be the turning point for the actor in him. I seriously could smell the talent in him when I watched LnG. But this was totally an emphatic performance. Best of shajon till date. Hope he will get such omnipotent roles in the future as well. Asha Sarath. could live up to my expectations and she could come out of that disastrous "Kumkumapoovu. Siddque dint have much to do still could evoke my emotions at times. Supporting crew did neat job and none gave us a boring experience.
In short "Drishyam" is going to be the Reference point for those who worked behind and before the camera. "Drishyam" is for those people who missed "MCT" r Devadoodan" kind of movies in theater. In the end I was really happy to see the crowd response everyone in the theater stood up and gave a big round of applause. The least we could give for this team. Expecting such supercilious quality movies from this team in future. Hope they wont disappoint us.
