Elvis (2022)

3 hour long movie trailer...
26 April 2023
I thought Elvis had plenty of unintentionally comical moments, but every scene jumps to the next with the hurried editing of a 30 second trailer. Tom Hank's character could have been an interesting view to Elvis' getting taken advantage of but many of Hank's scenes come across as a parody instead of a biopic. I've never been an Elvis fan by any means but I can't say I learned a single new thing about the guy in this movie. Important facts are just glossed over, like most Baz Luhrman films, it's really more of a visual/audio exercise than a film with an actual narrative and fleshed out characters. I'm not sure who this film is for other than hardcore Elvis fans.

Low Hanging Fruit Ramblings...
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hard to really call this a comedy special. For most bits, Marc just sort of rambles along on subjects from religion bashing to "gee my dad is old!" jokes and other material that's the sort of stuff you'd be stuck hearing on a long car ride with a talkative boomer... Just like his podcast, he doesn't seem to have any interest in learning about world events outside of what Stephen Colbert and John Oliver tells him every evening. His fear of not commenting about anything that may offend anybody (but Christians) makes it seem like the guy is just walking on glass the whole time. A lot of the sad attempts at "humor" are him saying something silly while making a face after wrapping up a long diatribe. Time and time again, after a middling story that goes nowhere for what seems like 10 minutes, his only attempt at humor just seems like such an amateurish grasp at being funny, I can't help but wonder if this was mostly improv. This material doesn't really feel like much compared to what an actual comedian puts together through writing, revision and testing the stuff out on audiences. I'm under the impression Moron is more of an actor, so I don't think comedy is really his focus. At the end, it he mostly gives up on attempts at humor and goes with sympathy points talking about losing his wife... I think Netflix would be better of putting this in the documentary or non-fiction category so as not to mislead viewers.

Not sure what the point was...
15 August 2022
There really isn't much of a plot outside of "UFO thing flies around and these characters you don't care about want to take a picture of it."

I can't even wrap my head around what was in the screenplay that this director thought was worth spending energy on a film production. Apparently the monkey scene was supposed to be scary? Or relevant? Tough to say... Scene after scene. Things happen. Not interesting things. Not funny. Not scary. Just things...

The final third; more things happen. Then it ends.

Worst sci-fi/horror whatever it was supposed to be I've seen in a very long time.

LOST without characters or plot.
10 June 2022
I don't want to waste much time on a review. I already wasted several hours sitting through most of the first season of the show. Can't say there was a single compelling character, plot moment or anything of interest that happens during the show. Every now and then something arbitrarily weird happens - sadly it just induces chuckles and sadly there's no character to care about. At the end, there are cliffhangers. If you felt cheated by LOST's rambling plot that felt like it kept going nowhere, this show will be an absolute nightmare.

Read the plot descriptions; "innies", "outties", "waffle parties" and lots of other ridiculous ideas that would have barely filled a Twilight Zone episode.

Dune (2021)
5/10
Depressingly empty viewing experience.
19 October 2021
First off, I'll say I love the book and I think the Alan Smithee edit of 1984 Dune is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Outside of the 2021 Dune's production design, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything positive to say. The original story has been completely ruined - many arbitrary changes, key characters left out, soul-sapping scenes of exposition and not really any heart going into any of the character, nor is there any tension in relation to the plot.

By the 2 hour mark, I didn't think there was one single entertaining scene that captured the beauty of Dune, the characters felt like they were reduced to wooden cutouts, and all the otherworldiness of the Arakis was missing and it just felt like a sleep-inducing slog in your average desert.

I wound up leaving at the 2 hour mark, can't say I have any interest to see where they decided to stop telling the story and there's no way in heck I'm going to waste my time with part 2.

Hopefully one day they'll actually try to adapt the book for cable/streaming; preferably as an 8-10 episode show.

Yet Another Groundhog's Day...
11 September 2021
Yet without the humor and FILLED with exposition regarding a very convoluted mess of a "time loop" plot.

I didn't find there to be any laughs or characters to care about. I'm really not sure what the writers, director and producers were seeing in this story. By the end, I didn't see what the point of any of it was other than to reuse and overcomplicated a tired storytelling premise.

Empty Sound Design Exercise
23 February 2021
I guess the enjoyment in this film may depend on if you like the main character and his performance. I've been a musician for almost 40 years, I can definitely relate to the idea of how devastating it would be to lose my hearing. I've always worn earplugs, even as a kid when I was in bands - so my ears are in good shape now.

I just found the movie absolutely soulless and meandering. I didn't think the main character had an ounce of personality at all. I understand once he lost his hearing, he wouldn't be a particularly happy person, but I never got the sense of watching a musician or a guy with any interesting traits, thoughts or anything that amounts to a living/breathing human. He just became more dreadfully empty once the movie moves to the scenes of him and the main deaf guy. I didn't find their relationship nor any of the scenes compelling whatsoever. No better were the dragging moments between the protagonist and his girlfriend.

Finally the movie "ends" - I just wanted my 90+ minutes of life back. I wouldn't recommend it but there are obviously a lot of people who enjoyed it, so watch the trailer and see if it's for you.

A cop/thug show.
10 May 2020
If that's your thing, this show has lots of cheesy dialog by cops and thugs who apparently all speak exactly the same; like David Simon. The episodes are all basically the same thing; cops talking, drug dealers talking. Sometimes somebody dies.

Watchmen (2019)

Arbitrary Woke Talking Points combined with Watchmen references
4 December 2019
I honestly have no idea why this is getting ANY good reviews - well, I do, but as far as storytelling goes, this is one of the more mediocre shows to air on HBO. But it's about race, and there are random reveals keeping it relevant on social media/Reddit, so people apparently feel the need to talk about it.

There isn't a protagonist, not really a compelling storyline, and lots of the show gets sidetracked to talk about race, race, race. Seems like Lindeloff found his new gimmick and it's apparently working, but this is a shame to see what he's done to the Watchmen property.

Little to do with book after semi accident happens
7 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it started off okay, if a bit generic. The cast was fine, the most interesting performance probably from the young girl, who's very sweet and has a great personality. Sadly, the movie soon relies on some cheap tricks, jump scares and ideas that don't do anything to help set the tone King did in his book.

I've read the book and I have to say, after about 25-30 minutes in, after a character is hit by a semi, there was little in the movie that made me feel like I was watching "Pet Sematary" as opposed to a movie about a creepy killer girl in a mask. The ending is rather ridiculous and absolutely nothing like the book. I wish I left early, the final 30 minutes was a boring and cliched slog.

I know working with young kids is a challenge, but I think it was a major mistake to switch the victim from who it is in the book, original movie. It changes too much and you lose a lot of different character arcs and wind up with a completely different storyline.

Pointless attempt at a home invasion/horror film
27 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Really not much to say about the film.

It is shot nice but for the most part, it's your basic home invasion film, but there are doppelgangers (rather silly ones) that attack their normal counterparts.

That is the film. Plus there is some symbolism and the occasional joke. The substance to the film relies on a tiny bit of flashbacks and a whole lot of exposition. I didn't find it scary and about 30 minutes in, once you get to the twins, you have to sit through almost 90 minutes of your basic horror movie fare.

There wasn't one memorable scene or character in the film, so I'm giving it 2/10. One point for cinematography, one point for it being a completed movie production.

Good cinematography, several long takes... Not much else.
23 December 2018
Biggest problem for me was almost a complete lack of three dimensional characters. I guess the main woman the film follows around was the main protagonist, but I felt like I was watching paint dry. There was an emotional void in the performances and the film's basic lack of any sort of story or direction. Lots of dramatic scenes came off rather silly, generating more chuckles than any sort of real feelings.

I gave it 3 out of 10, giving it one point for cinematography, one point for it being a finished film, and one point just because people seemed to like it. I have to wonder have A. Cuaron was thinking when he shot this screenplay (if there was an actual screenplay - maybe it was improv?).

Probably the worst of the SW films (or tied with Eps 1-2)
22 June 2018
Not a particularly entertaining film, Star Wars or not.

There aren't any compelling character arcs and the story for long stretches never feels like it's going anywhere. In a lot of ways, it's probably the most contrived of the Star Wars films, since just about EVERY decision seems like a petulant act by the writer/director to "subvert" Star Wars (i.e. NOT do what was expected).

So... If you love Star Wars and are expecting an entertaining film - prepare to have your expectations "subverted" - I'd avoid at all costs. Not a crucial part of the Star Wars saga, doesn't expand on anything from the previous film and doesn't set anything up for the next one.

The worst of the 3 Nolan Batman movies
14 June 2018
Not sure what they saw in the screenplay to actually go ahead with this film! Not a particularly compelling plot at all, and most sections just drag and drag on with no pay off. Doesn't really end on much of a note.

Standard Nolan film, really. Weak characters, cute time puzzles, decent cinematography and unintelligible sound/dialog mix.

I think my review covers whatever this show is trying to be.

Can't think of a more tired attempt at a new Seinfeld "nothing" style of show than this one.

Where's Joker? Where's the fun? When will it end?
7 October 2017
I barely made it through this film in the theater - can't really say much about it, have only seen half of it on cable since.

Problem for me; lisping guy with Daffy Duck voice was not Joker.

Oh, and like most of Chris Nolan's films, there's not much plot of characterization.

Probably the top film I'd point to for why many films are so dreadfully cold and empty these days. Glad to see Nolan's tiresome clichés are getting old. Only director working today I'll be glad to see retire.

Mindless sci-fi movie relying on editing cheat for "twist"
6 October 2017
The "sci-fi" part of the story is fairly irrelevant considering they don't really explore any of the ideas presented in the movie;

1) We are given "flashbacks" throughout the movie (but they turn out NOT to be flashbacks). ANY person who has a history of watching movies will be familiar with these edits; show a moody person with some sort of past, "flashbacks" of a son, of Jeremey Renner, would all lead any person to think these are scenes from the past (deceased son, failed marriage?). They aren't - but it doesn't really matter in context to the story.

2) The aliens know something about the future which requires understanding of an alien language. Apparently figuring out this language allows you to see the future. Conveniently for the filmmakers, they never tried to explore the whats/whys behind her newfound ability and how her learning a language can give her such a special skill. I've learned non-linear things before - never saw the future because of it.

3) There is also talk that something horrible happens in the future which requires the cooperation of earthlings to solve. Instead of seeing any hints at what this disaster may be, we are only privy to scenes of an Asian politician dancing with his wife.

Really, not ANY meat on this bone. The more you chew on it, the more you realize it's all fat.

Creed (II) (2015)

Remake of Rocky without compelling protagonist/antagonist
9 September 2017
I guess they had to try a new way to reinvigorate the Rocky franchise, so they basically rewrite the original screenplay, but the down on his luck boxer is Apollo Creed's son. Who the "Apollo Creed" is supposed to be in the new movie, I don't remember, because the antagonist (and plot in general) is so forgettable.

Also funny how they re-use the anticlimactic ending from Rocky 1, but without a compelling protagonist and completely forgettable boxing matches, the ending falls as flat as the rest of the film.

The thing I did think was slightly clever was the "titles" they'd put over the boxers Creed was fighting. Was a bit videogamey, but they were so forgettable otherwise, it definitely didn't hurt.

Stalone was great. Without him, this movie would have been an absolute clunker and had absolutely no dramatic tension or plot.

Well... It's LOUD and, umm...it's LOUD.
23 July 2017
Really can't say much more about it.

No real characters to care about, a needless time gimmick, most speaking parts are given to cutout archetypes to say exposition, and even the most harrowing of moments in the film come off as empty and procedural.

A lot of plot threads.
24 July 2012
Can't really think of much positive to say about it. Very gray and dull like the last Batman film, but without much of a story to really get into.

Some "twists" that seemed very contrived. Very Nolanesque scenes of arbitrary exposition, followed by very Nolaneque scenes of very staged-feeling, over-elaborate action scenes.

Just seemed to have no heart behind it. Perhaps it looked more interesting as storyboards.

Wouldn't recommend it under any circumstances unless you're a really big Nolan fan.

John Carter (2012)

Worse than I was led to believe.
14 March 2012
It's been a while since I've seen such a flat fantasy film (can't really call it sci-fi). I'm thinking back to the 90's with some of the generic post-apocalyptic films we'd get. Actually, in the 80's there was "Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn" which is what I kept thinking of when watching "John Carter".

The Good: if you like explosions, things explode. There are some decently designed costumes, which would have been great in a completely different film, not about Mars.

The Bad: editing, screenplay, acting, characters, lack of rooting interest in any of the main characters, lack of rooting interest in action scenes.

The Ugly: Lynn Collins acting. She was really, really trying, but the heavy delivery with the British accent, she sounded like an extra from "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena".

I kept waiting for Lucy Lawless to walk on screen and say, "can you tone it down, it's just a Disney movie? This isn't a high school Shakespeare play!" The scenery. Was it Utah or Arizona? I'm not sure but the movie never took me to Mars.

The jumping. Oh, the jumping.

You want to understand why it failed? There are some great reviews that really analyze all that went wrong with JC, from the curious decision to open with a big, messy battle scene with establishing, well, anything. At the end of the scene, you felt like the filmmakers were saying, "we didn't know a better way to introduce the bad guys, so here ya go..." In general, motivation, drive behind any character was totally missing. Just seemed like the actors weren't really given much direction as far as who they were supposed to be.

Really sad. Terrible attempt at making a fantasy/sci-fi film. Already dated. Already a failure the moment it hit the screen. You know a film is that bad when the second you see a trailer you know it's a dud.

Worst "movie" I've ever seen in my life.
4 September 2011
"Tree of Life" was a very depressing experience for me. I'm a passionate movie geek, always looking for a film to move and inspire me. After sitting through 50 minutes of "Tree of Life" I couldn't help but feel that the fast food nation I live in will never be as artistically relevant as the rest of the world. Where Russian and German directors can put together profound film experiences for the viewer, this was just an embarrassing, failed experiment.

The one thing I've had to wonder after watching some of "Tree of Life" was; would a bunch of monkeys armed with cameras capture less compelling material? The heavy handed "artyness" of the camera movement was anything but fluid or effective. It actually made the presence of the cameraman felt, completely taking me out of the film. The fact the actors were playing archetypes instead of actual people didn't help much. Lack of narrative completely killed any potential for the film. The interspersed Natural Geographic shots bordered on comical. Would be kind of funny to think if every director of family dramas tried so hard to be profound.

I couldn't help but feel bad for Sean Penn, especially reading his comments after he saw the final product. What a waste of his time and talent. He's always created an actual character with human traits, in "Tree" he's a prop in a music video. Nothing more. Though, the same can pretty much be said for all of the human props in the film.

I do think there's a sad, ironic justice in "Tree of Life". Everywhere across the continent there are filmmakers experimenting in different ways to affect the viewer. Here in Michael Bay's McAmerica we get a bloated, two hour music video directed by Hallmark and try to label it as "art".

Makes me realize how small and irrelevant we are in the big picture, as an American... As a Stanley Kubrick fan, I can't help but feel a bit sad and sick to think of how far the art of film has fallen. I'll never give Malick another second of my time.

Oh man, I didn't even mention the whispering or the random, arbitrary shots of nature. Why bother, watch the trailer. It's more effective than the actual film and tells the exact same "story"...

Two hours and little of interest happens
14 March 2011
Not an prison escape action movie, the relationships of Banks/Crowe is hardly explored, and not much really happens during the 2+ hours. It's just a by the numbers movie. Not an "action" movie, "drama", "comedy". Just a "movie".

There's a child playing Crowe's son, that seems completely bored with the whole thing. The police investigation side of the film is extremely unrewarding. No interesting characters and Liam Neeson's talents are completely wasted.

I DID watch the whole thing, and the acting was fine, the production was competent.

Just wondering where my two hours went, I guess...

Unlikable Kids All Speak Like the Same Person.
19 October 2010
If you like Sorkin's writing and would like to see a film of unlikable kids all speaking as if they were channeling him, then you may like "The Social Network".

If you like movies with a non-stop score through pretty much the entire movie, and if you like NiN, you may appreciate the way the filmmakers are trying to give the film some sort of life.

The Michael Cera actor is the same as he is in all his films, but not nearly as enjoyable. Can't really comment on the other actors, but Justin Timberlake seemed uncomfortably out of place. Female characters were basically non-existent.

If you know the basics of the story then there are no surprises there, it's about the Facebook founder. There are also some litigation and party scenes, plus several dorm scenes.

That pretty much sums up the film.

Mindless action film about the mind...
3 August 2010
I could explain the devices that drive the action, but that would take away the jobs of all the archetypes in the film who's job it is to endlessly spout exposition that will explain the nonsensical and unaffecting action you see on the screen.

If you think one level of action clichés is enough to rot your brain to a sub-100 IQ level, imagine SEVERAL levels of action clichés, all explained for you in a "hey this isn't very interesting but we've created a world and have to explain it so we can get back to the gunfights in a dreamworld".

I'd probably put this down as one of the most empty viewing experiences I've ever had in my 40 years of movie-going. I want my money and 120 minutes (I left early) back.
