Riddle of Fire (2023)
Where should i Even Begin...
The most "dungeon synth" movie of all time (the Opening credits let us know that Fogweaver and Holedwller are just two of the many creators who helped composing the score for this illustrious masterpiece)
Beginning with the careless attitude of days of childhood in a bizarr near fantasy envirment the movie captures one immediatly with the grainy 16mm aethetics. Like old family films the scenes play out this epic quest for video games and like a good rpg itself the side quests and the main quest are strongly intertwined.
Like if the goonies run into Panos Cosmatos' weird world of Mandy we see the weird in the familiar and the familiar in the weird.
The title track of Cannibal holocaust in the end sequences really brings home the whole story and charm of the movie.
Weird, morbid, quirky, offbeat and although absurdist also very open and charming, never sarcastic, this movie has it all!
Ghostbusters (2016)
Call 2016 They want they culture war battlefield back
I'm happy to have finally given this movie a chance after nearly 8 years of, even though I should have known better, ignoring it.
Is it perfect? Absolutly no! Is it as bad as the, lets say "manosphere crowd" to not use swearwords, say it is? Also absolutly no.
A very good looking, maybe slightly above average comedy would be a fair assessment. Although I wish the cameos and hints to the original films would be less prominent, the line "don't be like the mayor from jaws" gave me good laugh when it comes to cinematic referances.
In hindsight the weird move from known movie and videogame critic James Rolfe, to not even give it a chance to begin with, sure seems like an at least unfair thing to do and at worst makes him looke like fishing for a certain demographic most entertaines dont want to touch with a ten foot pole.
All in all it's a competently made fun movie (some shots reminded me again about what i love about cinema in general) that unfortunatly got caught up in the culture wars of the 2010s, but will probabaly seen for what it is now in 2024.
Destroy All Neighbors (2024)
Made for Fun evenings with Friends
It might be a dumb movie with a lot of stoner humor quotes, but also a super well made horror comedy about the struggle of making prog rock while being sieged by the most annoying neighbors imaginable.
The practical effects are crisp and will make any horror fan happy and the characters are fun, well acted and memorable, what more to ask for?
The score is not shabby either and it gives the visuals a callback but not 80's ripoff feeling while a good comedic timing makes the whole scenario work pretty well.
There is also one weird callback to Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" out of nowhere.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Gremlins ahead!
Loved this one. Not a masterpiece and the dialog is a bit "much" here and there, but overall solid entertaining nonsense.
Why is noone talking about the nice synthy soundtrack? Really loved this aspect of the movie.
As another reviewer said before me, if this is threatening your masculinity, you should get your stuff together.
Fatman (2020)
A little more action Please
As many other commenters before me mentioned this is by no means a bad movie. On the contrary for what it is it's solid in many departments like acting, location and directing.
But, and there's always a but with a 6/10 rating, the story is just a tad bit slow and the payoff is not really working with this much of a builtup.
After a really strong start that characterizes the differenty paties pretty well we get a lot of time watching dialog after dialog without any real development of the story.
The time from the point where the hitmen was contracted to the final showdown between him and chris should have been way shorter. Maybe the hitman requesting support from other killers who are disappointed by santa whould have been a good idea. This would more resamble the "the day the raindeer died" scenario pictured by "scrooged" back in the day, which we're still all waiting to happen one day.
Here's hoping this not-bad-at-all movie inspires more christmas themed action flicks!
Preacher (2016)
Come along for the Roadtrip of a Lifetime!
I really enjoyed this series with its unique Characters and lovely fleshed-out world. It's dark humour both being highly offensive and deeply insightful at other times, always gave me something to look forward to in the summer months. Ofc differences form the Comics had to be created, but all of them are really well Made (some of them I would even consider an improvement to the source material!) I loved to tag along for this 3 Year long ride that took us way beyond hell and back. And quit befitting at the end of September, Halloween and the dead of Summer coming closer every day, this series comes to a glorious end, just at the right time.
Auf wiedersehen Herr Starr! Goodbye Saint of Killers! See you around Humperdoo! see you next time Featherstone! Slán abhaile Cassidy! Au revoir Tulip! And Fairwell Jesse Custer, you mean sun of a gun!
The Burning (1981)
Not a bad movie, but boy oh boy is it in a weird place in 2018
I wondered that nobody brought up the irony (actually rather the uncomfortable connection) that of all poeple, "harvey weinstein" wrote the script for a movie where actually a couple of guys don't know what "no" means.
And the cherry on the cake is the portrayal of the "no means yes" trope. Yikes is that hard to watch in 2018. I can only imagine one of the many akward scenes fading to black "Written by harvey weinstein"
Fantastic.
But Like I said before, overall it's not a bad movie, the effects were great (savini duh!) and also the acting was at least ok.
Mandy (2018)
Where the Psychotic Drowns...
There is so much to say about this movie, but ultimately just this: Watch it!
Adventure Time (2010)
Good bye, old friend!
What a ride it was. The first seasons seemingly light entertainment with a slice of life part here and there, building up to some quiet serious mini series in the series in the later Seasons, that were really well put together and thought out. Al culminating to a big finale. Was it worth waiting 8 Years for it? I don't know, somehow yes, but I don't thin kthat that was the goal anyway. The Goal was the way all along and I can't wait to jump on this ride again, to say goodbye to the end and greet the beginning!
Happy! (2017)
This is bonkers and i love it!
A washed-up hit-man (played by the great Christopher Maloni), an animated wise-cracking horse and everything at least co- written by f-ing Grant Morrison? TAKE MY MONEY!!!! The first Episode is really well done, cuts, camera and soundtrack are neatly on point, really makes hungry for more!
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
Not as good as the first, but definitely no number two!
Entertaining Action/Spy FLick with many humorous takes and the classics of the genre (I liked the throwback to "Desperados" with the machine gun-suitcase scenes in the final showdown). Apart from that, it was clear that it is going to have conservatives foaming at their mouth, which of course is always a nice little extra. (Rantings about "cultural Marxism" incoming, lets see if I get censored because I use that little buzzword ;) )
Blood Drive (2017)
Love it, love it, love it
A very rare gem among the TV junkyard findings.
A horror show that gets so many things right and after a few episodes I was like "this is so much better than it has any right to be!" I'm invested in the characters, surprised by the story and witty dialog/characters and totally WANT A BLOODDRIVE BOARDGAME!
Feed your engine, fasten your seat belts and ride into a blood soaked sunset in this gear-grinding Splatterfest!
