Fargo: Bisquik (2024)
The last half hour
With a half hour to go, my wife and I both wondered what else there was to say. OMG, there was more. I will never forget the prison scene, where Jon Hamm learns of his true fate and Jennifer Jason Leigh secures what will be her best supporting Emmy, or the preparing a meal scene, where it seemed that two different dimensions were colliding. My wife had predicted that the three ladies would come out on top, and brother was she right. I was not familiar with the work of Juno Temple or Jennifer Jason Leigh, but now I have to check out their other performances. And next time I go the store I think I will ask to be directed to the vaseline and vienna sausages.
Our Miss Brooks: The Parlor Game (1954)
A classic episode
This might be my favorite episode. The opening scene, in which Mr. Conklin thinks that Miss Brooks's comments to Angela are actually directed to him, is a prime example of the excellent writing on the show. (And I'll bet that the "You can put it right there" line got the longest laugh in the entire series.) Then the conversation between Miss Brooks and Harriet Conklin, in which Miss Brooks realizes, without saying a word, who should be giving the lesson, shows what a wonderful actress Eve Arden was even when not speaking a word. And finally, the scene in which she describes the "Around the Clock" parlor game is absolutely priceless. I laughed as much the fifth time I saw it as I did the first time. "Our Miss Brooks" was a gem of a show and this episode demonstrates why.
My Name Is Earl: Our 'Cops' Is On! (2007)
Funniest yet of season two
Yes, the Cops episode of Earl is my favorite of the season so far. So many great lines. My favorite was "You had me at...." (well you know what he said). You had to love it when the school bell was heard just as Tim was being interviewed by the cop. And with the following week's episode -- My Name is Everybody Else on the Show -- they are clearly clicking on all cylinders. So many shows do badly with famous guest stars. Not Earl. That lady from Drew was hysterical in this one. Be sure to watch when everybody's singing the Cops theme song. Even then Randy isn't able to get it right. Classic. My only minor complaint about this episode is that Crabman was apparently living with his grandmother. That doesn't seem to fit in with his undercover past. Maybe they'll explain that later. Still, a ten from this reviewer.
Before Sunrise (1995)
How did I miss this movie the first time?
I can't believe none of my friends told me about this wonderful movie back in 1995. OK, I'm not usually into romance/love stories (aside from Casablanca, Brief Encounter, and Now Voyager -- all right, maybe I *am* into them), but this one is different. You don't feel like you're watching a movie, the dialog rings so true. And the scene where they make their pretend phone calls -- top 10 movie scenes of all time. Next time you watch this movie, watch them watching each other. Their relationship grows so subtly that you don't realize how into each other they are becoming. What is it about trains and lovers and Europe? Linklater found the perfect story and location and actors. What more do you want? Please, give this one a chance.
