Get Smart (2008)
It's very good...No...It's Hilarious
I come from the audience who grew up with Maxwell Smart in the days of Black & White television, so when I saw the first few scenes of Get Smart I was worried if I'd wasted my time...
By the time the final scene ended I knew how much I'd enjoyed Get Smart by my tired cheeks and sore belly... This movie is hilarious...There are nods and expected jokes from the old series amongst a very cleverly rework of Control vs Kaos... Carell brings his brand of humor and lays it over the essence of Don Adams and some flavors of Mel Brooks. Expect some cameos from the series and Get Smart fans...I saw this movie on DVD but should have seen it in the cinema as it has some big action in it as well...
Whether your new to Get Smart or know the old series, in my opinion you can't go wrong with this flick...Hopefully we'll get a sequel as good as this and another era of Maxwell Smart.
An Aussie Goes Bolly (2008)
Low budget good results...
The series follows the adventures of Gus Worland as he travels through India following the Australian Cricket team. He befriends several locals who become his guides on his journey. Viewers are presented with the passion of India's Cricket fans amongst which Gus barracks for his beloved Aussie team.
What makes this series interesting is that even if your not a Cricket fan, there is ample coverage of local customs and culture as Gus takes part in local High School sports, a guest in an Indian home, and backyard cricket....
Overall An Aussie Goes Bolly is like a Lonely Planet/Pilot Guide series of India with India's Cricket fever a major theme.
I have just recently got back into watching the Cricket and this low budget show is a nice addition to Cricket season viewing...
Huo Yuan Jia (2006)
A good story lost in mediocrity
Huo Yuan Jia is worth a look, but lacked any depth to the story.
This well acted film had great potential, but lacks in developing the characters and historical context. The art direction at times is exquisite which is one of the better aspects of the film. The story is disjointed at times and leaves some loose ends to text at the end of the film.
It is a shame that out of the legends surrounding the real Huo Yuan Jia the film only presents some of the more well known "historical-like" facts.
This film will please some, but isn't anything you'll rave about the next day.
Enough Rope with Andrew Denton (2003)
Good Stuff
Andrew Denton is one of the most respected television interviewers on Australian TV. He allows the interviewees to disclosure their human side which you are less likely to see with other interviewers. He has interviewed people from all walks of life, from Bill Clinton to homeless people.
The quality of interviews on "Enough Rope" has been maintained over the years with Andrew Denton having a integral role in programs quality.
Enough rope is definitely worth a watch no matter who is being interviewed. The ABC broadcasts "Enough Rope" on Monday nights.
If you live outside Australia, Enough Rope is available on Video and DVD from the Australian Broadcasting Corporations "ABC Shop".
