Queen Cleopatra (2023)
Wouldn't recommend this series even to history buffs
I love history films. I watch almost any history movies and series - even enjoyed the last remake of the Alamo which didn't do too well. But this docu series is just bad in so many ways. Historical accuracy is atrocious and on top of that the acting and script is more of a bad soap opera than a respectable history series. Normally I would say if you are a lover of history then watch a series like this but pass if you are not. In this case I wouldn't even suggest this show for history buffs.
What is especially sad is there may be a generation of young people who watch this and believe this made-up, fantasy history is actual fact and truth our our world history.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Watch it if you have time to kill and not a die hard D&D fan
I love fantasy novels and have been a big fan of D&D for decades. When I saw this movie coming out I thought great...time for D&D fun for more people...I especially thought with the lead actor (he was great in Star Trek) that this would be a good one.
Unfortunately, the story and writing is terrible. Cliched dialogue, terrible attempts at humor..it's really bad (I guess they were trying to me like the Marvel movies which do carry humor well but this move is funny as slipping on a banana peel). The Only reason I sat through the entire movie was I'm a big D&D fan.
But unless you are a die hard D&D fan (as there are very few other movies on this topic)., use your movie dollars for a different fantasy movie.
Battleship (2012)
Great special effects with terrible acting and script
I'm a sucker for sci-fi movies and this one had a good overall premise and very good special effects so worth a watch from this aspect. Kudos to the special effects team. A big but is the acting is just terrible, especially the male lead actor as he has to be one of the worst stillted actors I've seen in a while. And Rihanna who I think is one of the sexiest, good singers around should stick to singing. Maybe it wasn't the actors and just the terrible script writers and casting director who threw in every imaginable cliches, and stereotype.
Old Henry (2021)
Great Western - but with return of Anakin Skywalker
Reminds me of the great westerns from the past. Good story, gritty cinematography and great acting performance from most of the cast.. The only minor negative is the casting of the son, who reminds of the very miscast/poor acting Anakin Skywalker from one of the Star Wars movies.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Don't waste your time and money on 1984..go back and see the 1st One.
I loved the original Wonder Woman and also liked Wonder Woman in Justice League. And I think Gal Gadot is generally a great actress and someone with an excellent sense of self humor and timing.
But this movie is just so bad that it is hard to begin. Starts with terrible casting, the cheesy script, acting that seemed wooden, plotline that is just lazy. The ending to this movie seems like the script writers said, ok, I'm tired of working on this movie and I already got paid, so let's just wrap it up with a stupid, non-sensical finish that makes no sense.
My friends invited us to watch on Apple TV and I was amazed that they had to pay nearly $30 for this movie to rent. What a total, waste of money that was!! This movie belongs in the $0.99 DVD clearance bin at the local store.
Hunter Killer (2018)
Love cold war suspense movies, especially with Subs, but turns out to be an average action film
Start by saying I love cold war Sub films. Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red October ranks up there with my top favorite movies. So I was really looking forward to this film but although good for a movie night at home with the family, was overall a disappointment. I would give it a 3 or 4 rating but I love sub movies.
Positives: great underwater sequences -- who doesn't love action with subs navigating through dangerous waters and high suspense with torpedoes and modern equivalent depth charges and international intrigue.
Major negatives: Who ever was the casting head did a terrible job across so many fronts, it was so stereotypical that it was cringe worthy. To start with, I get it that it is good to push past old stereotypes and cast women and minorities in leadership roles. But the black admiral just didn't cut it, his acting is really bad...they really needed an actor with serious gravitas and delivery, this guy absolutely didn't cut it (by the way I'm one of the racial minorities and his acting was just terrible). And then it is followed up with the very stereotyped, young, female NSA rep who pushes back on the old establishment (her acting was not great either). The icing on the cake was the Hillary look alike for the President who was just terrible (I'm absolutely not a fan of Trump so don't think is from a Trump supporter). The other major negative was the superman achievements of the 4 man special forces squad. I get it that is is just a movie but what they achieve is just above the realms of any realism (did they have any real special forces advisors on this film).
I wish the makers of this movie would have watched Crimson Tide and Hunt for Red October a few more times to learn the lessons on how to make a less cringe worthy and a great cold war sub movie.
Fractured (2019)
Surprisingly well crafted suspense movie...well worth seeing
I am generally wary of seeing these movies that supposedly has twists and turn endings that you can usually guess 10 mins into the movie. This one kept me guessing throughout and is a well crafted suspense movie. My wife and I both woke up next morning and said to each other were you just thinking about that movie we saw last night? and we were. It's been a long time since a movie has done that.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Really wanted to like this movie but impossible to
I'm a fan of this genre and looked forward to seeing it. But the only positive thing I can say about this is great visual effects; the rest is bad screenplay, terrible casting, and wooden acting. I watched this on a long plane flight and tried to keep watching it 3 or 4 times to enjoy it but finally gave up.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
Liked the first one but don't waste your time with this sequel
Although the first Pacific Rim movie had mixed review, I really liked it for the story, retro style back to the old Godzilla like storyline and great special effects. So I was looking forward to seeing the sequel.
But don't waste your time on this movie. The script is terrible, acting is wooden and stiff (related to this, casting is just atrocious; I am all for hiring unknown, new actors/actresses but they must have found this cast from a high school stage show -- and this may be giving them too much credit). Even the special effects, can't make up for the time blackhole this movie is.
Ben-Hur (2016)
I wanted to like this movie so badly but this is so bad
I am a huge fan of the original Ben-Hur movie but did think it was a bit outdated. When I heard a new version was being made I was waiting in anticipation. And I'm not one of those people that thinks the original version was the best and difficult to surpass. But this movie is so bad in terms of casting, script, storyline and cinematography, I need to warn any potential viewers to stay away. I tried to watch this on the plane, TV and gave it one last chance on my business travel in my hotel room. I was that desperate to like this movie. But I could not stand watching this for more than 5 minutes at a time. I rarely ever say this but this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
Bokeh (2017)
Applause for the Tourism Bureau of Iceland
I had such high hopes for this movie loved the thesis. I dragged my entire family into the playroom one Sunday night to watch this and my mistake was not reading the rating or the reviews beforehand. Suffice to say my movie cred has been dragged way down my making my family suffer through this.
My views of this movie is well said by earlier reviewers with the title "Postapocalyptic boredom" and "post apocalypse without soul" , so won't repeat these reviews.
My conclusion is that there was a fantastically creative person at the Iceland Tourism Bureau, who sponsored this, as the movie was just very bad but made me want to visit Iceland.
