Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Lazy recycled science fiction
This highly anticipated film fell short of expectations. Despite my optimism for a revival of Hollywood sci-fi, it disappoints with a lackluster script and subpar acting. The characters lack depth and appeal, seemingly cast solely for their looks. The abundance of attractive actors detracts from the authenticity of the roles. Furthermore, the prevalence of clichéd weak and evil male personas adds nothing new to modern cinema. Regrettably, the film appears as a mishmash of recycled sci-fi tropes, lacking originality or innovation. It's every science fiction and fantasy film made and thrown into a blender and poured out in Zack Snyder slow motion. Oh ya, every action scene is in slow motion. Nothing is original anymore. It's all been done. A hot 110 pound ass kicking Sofia Boutella was going to save this film. The worst part is they made a part 2.
Elvis (2022)
A bad dream
I was looking forward to this movie. I wanted to enjoy it but it is a total mess. It feels like a panic attack. Totally rushed like it's a movie trailer or music video. Scenes jump too quickly. They did a great job styling the film but that's it. There is not a character in the film I cared for. This a absolute shame because Austin Butler did a great job. I feel it was just as much about Tom Hanks character Parker as it was about Elvis. I started to get irritated every time I saw or heard Hanks. The soundtrack doesn't match the era of the movie. Any time they play modern music in a historical piece it feels wrong. At times it sounded like a Michael Bay film with big action scene music for scenes that didn't require it. This could have been so much better. Elvis would be pissed.
Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021)
Heartbreaking tribute
Anthony was and is still my favourite "celebrity". Watching his shows was an escape for me as I'm sure it was for many others. He was given an opportunity to use his gift of writing to celebrate a human experience that most would want. I'm glad he had the nerve to do it. But this is also a story about mental illness. No matter how successful you are, you are not immune to it. That is what we should all take away from his story.
