Salaam Namaste (2005)
something new
For the past few years, Bollywood has put an extra effort to present something new to the desi audience and resulted with brownie points in movies like Hum Tum, Aitraaz and few others. Salaam Namaste definitely proves a new winner in this trend. The movie revolves around two young Indian lovers - Ambar and Nikhil Arora(Nick is what he likes to be called) living in Melbourne. They both decide to live together in separate rooms in order to get to know each other. But in the course of living together, Ambar gets pregnant. A strong-headed girl, Ambar who initially didn't want to fall into the responsibility of caring kids and playing a typical housewife finally comes to her senses. She wants to marry Nick and start a family. Nick, on the other hand is not yet ready to get tied into any marital relationship. Both have a clash in their feelings and fight with each other. But eventually, Nick falls for Ambar, marries her and they both have twins. The first half of the movie is playful with Nick and Amber's fights and not to forget two beautiful songs. The pace slows down on the second half but quickly picks up in the end. However, it would have been more normal if the comic sequence in the hospital during Priety's delivery were lessened. Also a fully blown-up pregnant Preity gyrating her hips and dancing difficult steps in the "paune barha baje" song seems a bit indigestible. Music is trendy and hummable. Performancewise, Preity and Saif stand out. Arshad is likable. Abhishek is over-hyped. Overall, a good movie especially for today's youths!!
Freaky Friday (2003)
full of fun!!
This a fun family movie with impressive performance from both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Lohan. One morning, Anna(lohan) and her mother(Curtis) find themselves trapped in one another's body. How they deal with their current situation and manage things is the movie all about. This movie also throws some light on mother-daughter relationship. The fact that both mother and daughter should share each other's feelings to better themselves is shown in a beautiful way. Throughout the movie, there are several comic scenes. I watched them all over and over again. Overall a very fun movie everyone should watch. Go get a DVD and have fun!!
No Man's Land (2001)
war never ends!!
This is easily one of the best movies I've seen after a long time. There is an ongoing war between Bosnia and Serbia Montenegro. Two soldiers Nino(Siberia) and Ciki(Bosnia)are trapped in a trench between the two borders. Another Bosnian soldier, Niki is lying above a bouncing mine. The UN Peace volunteers come to rescue after a wide media encouragement from journalists. But the two soldiers end up losing their lives due to their constant fight blaming each other for starting the war. Unfortunately, the diffusing of mine underneath Niki's body is impossible. So he's left there. The story is simple, comic yet sad and true. A very impressive performance from all the casts starting right from the two soldiers to the journalist, Jane Livingstone. A very beautiful message shown in this movie we all should learn that war never leads to anything but trouble.
Bunty Aur Babli (2005)
tom and jerry!!
Having seen "Sathiya"(very good movie with the same director), I was expecting a lot from this movie. But "Bunty Aur Bubli" doesn't hold up to Sathiya's level. The movie starts off showing two small-town-young-ambitious youths(Abhishek and Rani). Both have their dreams to prove the world. Rani wants to become Ms.India and Abhishek's never pointed directly in the film(i assume it's a social worker). But in a country where corruption still persists and especially where small town youths are considered unsophisticated, both face failure. Tasting the sour reality, both change their original names to Bunty and Bubli. Then the journey begins fooling rich, silly people and politicians. By then, Bunty and Bubli are so popular that their news are making headlines all over the country. A cop(Mr.Bachhan) tries to catch both of them. But its not an easy task. Thus, the tom and jerry game begins. I never understood the theme of the movie. Well, they seem to be helping poor citizens by showering with money they stole(or rather grab cleverly)from the riches. I'm still confused are they thieves, socialist or what not!! Besides, it leaves few questions untouched. What happened to Rani's desperate dream of becoming fashion model, designer and Ms.India?? Abhishek's philosophy of success("ees duniya mein do kisim ke aadmi hote hai...") is not really justified. Also it's so funny that wherever Bunty and Bubli go, they always seem to leave the "Bunty love Bubli" tag. I was laughing at a serious scene where Rani is pregnant, crying with pain, driven in a wheel chair. The cops are shown searching for them and Abhishek looks tensed. But with so much difficulty and Rani's sickness, they still manage to leave "Bunty love Bubli" sign on the wheelchair. Why would anyone do that knowing the cops are looking for them?? Overall, the film would have been more interesting if the film did not have so much cocktail(romance, comedy, thriller and what not!!)feel. Music is really good esp. Aish's dance number. Performancewise, all the actors have done their best. But the film's ending is rather awkward. It would have been better if Rani was shown doing some Fashion designing or Abhishek as teacher or some politician!!
