The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
Ogotchi Knives
What a film! I had just watched Ungentlemanly Warfare and Whiplash (Because it's a rainy Sunday) and thought there is no way could I could strike gold with a third that same day. The Last Stop In Yuma County is as good if not better than those. The music, dialogue, camera work, acting and most importantly (to me at least), unpredictability make this an instant classic. More like a Hitchcock than a Tarantino I think as it is subtle and paced more patiently. I don't think this is a spoiler but during the credits, you'll hear an advert for Ogotchi Knives - I love little touches like this and this film if full of those 'little touches'.
Happy Little Bunnies (2021)
Very hard to categorise
Not scary enough to be a horror, not funny enough to be a comedy and not slick enough to be a thriller. Despite being uncomfortable in parts, Happy Little Bunnies is extremely watchable. Great dialogue, quality acting and equal moments of hilarity, disgust and confusion. Its easy to see why this film has been rated as low and as high as it has. I hope to persuade film lovers to give it a go and ignore the majority with this one - it will be a cult classic and Happy Little Bunnies will satisfy anyone into low-budget, British comedy/horror/slasher/suspenseful psychological thrillers. Adults only.
The I-Land (2019)
Annoying and genuinely irritating
Watch the first episode (if you can get through it) otherwise you'll never believe how bad it is
I rated it 2 stars because at least the island they're on looks nice
Death Wish (2018)
Great no-nonsense revenge action movie
Has slightly more depth than the negative reviews give it credit for. I believed in most the characters and was able to overlook any small cheesy moments although I only spotted a couple. Not a keeper but definitely a watcher
The Last Days on Mars (2013)
I didn't make it to the end of the movie
Sci-fi Survial Horror is my favourite genre of movie but I was suspicious from the opening scene of Last Days On Mars because it showed a hot landscape - I thought that maybe it was a training scene set on earth but, unbelievably, it was supposed to be Mars!
Soon after, I kept wondering how such an incompetent team had made it there in the first place, let alone survive as long as they did. They deffo would not have been chosen for the most important space mission to date.
Good acting and excellent props are wasted on this - I can't believe people watched it til the end let alone score it higher than 5. I was genuinely irritated by it
Headgame (2018)
Better than Jigsaw?
I enjoyed watching this more than the latest Jigsaw (2017) movie. it's predictable, low-budget stuff but if you are after a fun, watch-with-a-friend, low-expectation flick, then give this a go.
I mostly look forward to reading others' reviews, mostly
The Pyramid (2014)
Very good, Low(er) budget, Sci-fi horror
OK so maybe not a ten out of ten but certainly not 5 or 6 that was rated and i wanted to compensate for that.
This film has plenty of good features - good acting (on the whole), good character development, a realistic plot (I have argued with my pals over that), surprises, love, suspense, humor, believable script and effects and it was educational (assuming the ancient Egyptian facts within the film are correct, I didn't Wiki them)but above all the film was fun and largely unpredictable. I wonder what the people that scored this low want from a movie - a huge budget and recognizable faces perhaps? EASILY 7 out of 10
Xi you ji: Da nao tian gong (2014)
Fans of the story will love it
I really enjoyed this movie despite its obvious shortcomings. It it a good live-action remake of the 1965 animated feature of the same name (well worth checking out if you're a fan of art films). Donnie Yen does OK as the lead but western fans of his previous films may be left confused and/or disappointed a long time before the 120 mins of 'Fantasy Action' ends - It really helped that I was already familiar with the story as a lot happens in that time. I wonder how the second part will compare with the excellent Journey To The West: Conquering the Demons (2013) as the story from that follows this one - that's not a spoiler is it?
