The Omega Code (1999)
We literally burned our tickets in the parking lot
My husband and I saw a portion this film because it was playing at the right time and the title sounded cool. This is the first and only movie we have walked out of. The reason, five minutes into the film there was a blond girl with a golden retriever smack dab in the middle east just waiting to be snatched by a baddie. To clue in the clueless audience bad guy themed music boomed through out the theater. After this cliché to the hilt opening my husband and I walked out and took a cigarette lighter to our tickets.
Years later friends were discussing awful films, I told her that I had seen 5 minutes of a truly awful movie. Interested she asked me the title when I told her it was the Omega Code she became upset. Being a born again Christian she told me that this was a really good film and that she had it on VHS and that I could borrow it. I told her no thanks and she said she would pray for me.
Beyond Borders (2003)
Beyond What?
Beyond Borders had the potential to show viewers the plight and suffering of peoples around the world. However, instead of focusing on the suffering of people viewers are given a half-baked romance. Do makers of films today believe that viewers are incapable of watching a film without romance/sex scenes? The film was informative by showing the many areas of the world where refugees, disease and famine are rampant. However, the time spent in each area is so brief that the sense of these issues does not truly penetrate the viewer. It's as if these missions of mercy are just day trips by Jolie's character to the desert, jungle and tundra.
This film could have been so much more; it had the chance to promote awareness and charity. Jolie's character of Sarah is supposed to be concerned with children however; her own children in the film are virtually neglected by her. Owen and Jolie have no on screen chemistry and most of the dialogue is on par with 17-year-old high school girls. The makers of Beyond Borders should have decided whether the film was going to be a romance or an informative film. By blending the two genres together it cheapens and blurs the intent of the film.
Titanic (1997)
No magic
When this film came out in the late 90's, I made a vow that I would not see it in the movie theatre. I kept to my vow but God in his infinite wisdom made sure I saw it. On a trans-Atlantic flight the feature presentation was Titanic. I took it as a sign and I watched the film, I was preparing to be whisked away into the film but I was only slapped by it. I found the acting to be dreadful and the dialogue between the characters was awkward at best. I used to be a fan of James Horner but listening to the soundtrack I was torn, was I listening to Braveheart or snippets from Apollo 13(which was a reconstituted score of Sneakers)? Nearing the end of the flight and the film during the promise scene between Rose and Jack with the line "I'll never let go" I mumbled "let the buggar sink" a little too loudly and was shushed loudly and got dirty looks. Sorry, but the line was so corny and the delivery was not believable. The reason this is being written nearly 8 years later is that fact that Titanic was on today and I wanted to give it a second chance. With this viewing I was again struck with the herky-jerky dialogue, bad acting and Continuity problems galore! With the tagline of Titanic being the biggest budgeted film of the time where was the money for continuity and anachronisms. A ten minute search on the internet would has solved many problems. Artistically this film is good yet when I pay my 8-9 well earned bucks for a film I want to be transported away for 2-3 hours. With this film I was not transported anywhere, I sat in my seat and I was aware of my seat and that I was rolling my eyes.
