Heaven Is for Real (2014)
I hope so.. Don't you?
I knew what I was getting into by deciding to watch this movie instead of an action-comedy.. and I watched it anyway. It really is a heart-warming, (almost) tear jerker of a movie that has moments in it that make you just want to go "Awwwww". The acting, however, is not top notch, but conveys the story well enough to warrant a second viewing.. I didn't hesitate at all when I was asked to watch this flick a second time. SPOILER ALERT: The little boy in the movie 'visits' heaven and comes back to tell his family all about it. Not all in one go, but in little trickles/tidbits of recollection. His dad, being a pastor, doesn't know what to make of it. His mom's not convinced at first but something fascinating seals the deal with her too. If you, like the community in the movie, are not open-minded, this movie is probably NOT for you! Seriously, give it a pass.. it'll save you from having to rant about your beliefs to the person sitting next to you whose trying to enjoy the movie (presuming that person's open-minded).. Now I obviously don't know if heaven is the way it is described in this movie, but I for one, hope it is! The boy's knowledge cannot be explained by modern day science. It does leave the viewer wondering a) IF everything were actually experienced by the boy, b) if it was related to him from a family member OR c) just included to make his experience even more believable to the reader/viewer. Funny thing about books/movies based on "true storys".. Artistic License still allows for the end result to contain untrue events, for the promotion of the material being created. Nevertheless, I think this is a good option for family movie night!
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
..AND then the story unfolds..
I was not sure what to expect when going to watch this movie. I was pleasantly surprised! It had a little bit of everything - a good family movie IMHO. Jack Ryan drops out of college and becomes a marine. After the helicopter they were in gets shot to sh#t, he heroically saves two fellow officers and in the process, sustains damages to his spine, landing him in hospital with a 90min window of ever walking again. He has the hots for the med student(played by Keira Knightly - who wouldn't have the hots for her,) who's helping him walk again. They can't date..doctor/patient relationship, but they do end up married (i think?!) Anyways, he is approached by the CIA who offer him an undercover position, which they tout as a desk job..the condition of the post is that he should complete his doctorate. So the desk job he lands is that of an auditor/analyst. On a routine trip to Moscow to audit a clients books, he quickly learns that it's not your usual desk job (aka #FinallyTheActionBegins) when his client-provided chauffeur tries to kill him as soon as he enters his apartment. A fight ensues which results in a lovely bathroom being reduces to a bullet-hole filled, ceramic tile & glass shard, water park. ANNND then the story unfolds - great action scenes, use of Splinter cell type gadgets, breaking into & out of secure areas within a short time-line.. ends happily ever after for the "good guys"
Extraction (2013)
sequel please
I was initially not keen on watching it due to the low ratings at the time, but watched it anyways..and thoroughly enjoyed it! Movie started off rather slow, but had the terse storyline that an action movie should have. You know the type? ..One Man, One Mission.. that sorta thing! Action? Yeah - It had action & a dash of espionage too.. Reminiscence of the Rambo/Chuck Norris type movies of yesteryear. Doesn't look like a high-budget movie, but I would definitely watch the sequel (if one is made) Hint, hint, nudge, nudge @Directors.
Storyline: So this team of soldiers go on a mission to extract a prisoner out of a Chechin prison. But the guards 'somehow' know their every move and thus, intercept & terminate all but one of the team. His name is 'Mercy', and even though he was rather aptly named, as is evident in the beginning of the flick (and somewhere's in the middle), he shows you no mercy unless you deserve it. Pretty gory kill-scenes #youHaveBeenWarned
Autumn Blood (2013)
SnoreFest 2013
Personally I looked at the name of the movie & figured it was a Horror movie of sorts - I was wrong(or was I). In a word, one may say this movie is "Deep", but I think it was a waste of valuable time. The very first scene leaves one wondering.. and by the very last scene, one is still not quite sure what just happened (& if one has a higher IQ, one may have postulated so many theories which may lead one to frustration). The 'leading lady' did stupid things which resulted in bad consequences.. The bad guys behavior was inconsistent. This is one movie, wherein YOU can speak in the cinema & no-one would "shhh" you for it, because words are a welcome addition to any movie in the 21st century! Okay, so its set in a rather secluded, mountainous area & if a brother & sister had no-one but themselves as friends/family, they should know each other well enough to not have to speak all the time (I get it)... BUT IF I WANT PEACE AND QUITE, I WON'T GO TO THE CINEMA!! ~One
