Pushover (1954)
It could have been an 8
I enjoyed this movie, as I think Fred MacMurray is one of our great actors, with a wide range. Comedy to drama. Happy nerd to hardened cop or lower level establishment man. Clearly he is bored with his mission in life in this film and the great Double Indemnity.
Possible Spoilers:
OK. why a 7 and not an 8? I felt Paul Sheridan's (MacMurry) disgust with his life and his apparent loneliness could have used more development. He falls too easily for Kim Novak's character, even if she is strikingly beautiful. She too easily goes with him the first night they meet. It would be more believable, and more sensual, if there were two meetings at least, to pulse his desire for her.
Now, I don't particularly like films where the male star is a little long in the tooth for his paramour.This was common in the 50s and 60s when Male stars of the 30s and 40s were cast with much younger female leads, presumably because of the men's star power. I put forward Bogart,and Bill Holden with Audrey Hepburn (totally unbelievable) in Sabrina, Bogart being 55 and Hepburn 25.Or Rear Window with an older Jimmy Stewart, age 47, and Grace Kelly, 25.
With some suspended belief, this is a very enjoyable movie. I love noir.The story lines of noir are simple and pure and the mood dark. I believe this movie pulls it off though it was the waning period of noir: 1954;
Grantchester (2014)
Grantchester Fun Show
I have not read the books. Therefore I enter as a virgin into the land of Grantchester. So, to me, it is a pleasant, light, somewhat funny, charming show. If we accept the idea that the Director meant to make the show in that way, I think that it is successful. I think the acting is excellent, and the stories are within reason, and interesting,but not hard-hitting because the show is not meant to be "film noir". It is light entertainment. I don't have to really believe that a Vicar, Sidney Chambers (James Norton),is regularly solving murders with his friend, Geordie, the police detective. I need not believe that a seemingly small town would have so many murders--one or more weekly--OK, let's say the time frame is two months apart, still.....you get it. So I give this show a 9 because I do enjoy it. I particularly like the acting of James Norton as the Vicar, but all are good.
Nurse Jackie (2009)
Spoilers Possible
I would have rated Season One a 10. Right now I would rate Season 6 a 7 and definitely a comeback from Season 5.
Here are some things I don't like about the show now: I can't see "Frank" as Jackie's boyfriend. To me, he is a Bland Character and not like a real human being.
Jackie's relapse makes the show a lot more interesting, as well as her daughter's problems, but her sponsor makes my skin crawl. Nobody is that cheerful all the time!
Praise: I love Edie Falco, Merrit Weever, Peter Facinelli, THor, and Gloria Ikilitus (spelling prob wrong).Oh and that Hot Doctor hooked to Dr. Coop! (more nude scenes of her please).
