The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
One of the greatest....and most disturbing films ever made
Oh my God, where to begin. Let me start off by saying that if your squeamish, DO NOT watch this movie. You might very throw up or pass out. It is incredibly disturbing visually and emotionally. What really makes this film so sick is the fact that is seems so real. As your watching this, you forget your watching a work of fiction. Everything in this movie just creeps me out and Buffalo Bill is the freakiest killer ever to grace the screen. Maybe the scariest b/c he, again, seems so real.
Acting-wise...hits the spot. Anthony Hopkins proves once again why he, in my opinion, is the greatest actor that has ever lived. This was his golden torch. Jodie Foster was DEAD-ON! Jesus Christ she was so in-freakin-crebily convincing as the tough but vulnerable woman. Ted Levine creeped me out....baaaaaad. He played the pshyco almost as well as Hopkins. And last but not least Scott Glenn. Bravo dude, bravo. You hit it home, what more can I say?
All in all, very few movies has ever really scared me(Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and even fewer have actually made almost throw up(I Spit on Your Grave). Add Silence of the Lambs to both categories. If you can take it...watch it.
Underworld (2003)
Hellbent For Leather
For some reason every time I had a chance to see this movie I passed it up. Now, I'm mad I passed it up so many times before. Underworld is a hardcore, action-packed flick that will leave you begging for more. The storyline itself is surprisingly original and is in no way, shape, or form predictable. I was surprised that a movie like this could also be so smart. The action-scene were no "Matrix", but they held their own.
Acting-wise, Kate Beckinsale was in-freakin-credible. She also looked amazing in tight black leather with peircing blue eyes. Bravo. Scott Speedman, for what he was given, was solid, but his character felt kind of underplayed.
Overall, if you see Underworld(or its sequel), don't make the same mistake I did. Pick it up and enjoy.
The Unknown (2005)
Nice, not the best, but still enjoyable
Yes, its a monster movie with teens. Now lets let all the little fags go and give it a 1 strictly on that fact w/o even watching the movie. Here's what I think...
Pros) 1-Well made 2-Very credible acting(except foe the poachers) 3-Great use of characterization 4-Nice camera work 5-Light humor 6-Good plot 7-GREAT ending, no last second scares or any crap like that, nice and solid
Cons) 1-Why did the poacher kill his friend again? 2-After the dude does all this perverted crap, the idiot blonde STILL wants him to sleep with her 3-Someone please tell me who in their right mind would go into the woods where a bunch of people just got slaughtered 4-Monster looked kinda retarded
All in all...I've seen A lot better, but I've also seen A lot worse.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
A classic to the core....
The greatest horror movie of all time is John Carpenters masterpiece "Halloween", however, this is not far behind. Quite possibly the most verbally creepy movie of all time. The Hitchhiker talking about how to make "Headcheese", good God Almighty, sikkkkkkkkk. The very first appearance of Leatherface scared the living crap out of me. He was pretty damn deadly with that sledgehammer. His true origins kept me in mystery as well, I kept wondering if the Hitchhiker and leatherface were the same person, or if the old gas station man was him. The I find its a whole FAMILY of pshycos, WOW! Hooper kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through with masterful directing. The acting is topnotch, although the characters did not really develop, it really didn't matter considering how quick leatherface killed them off. The only ones who we needed to care about were Sally, Franklin, Leatherface Hitchhiker, and Father phsyco. The father got to me as someone who killed solely for food, he talked about how he just cant stomach killin. Hitchhiker was just....well, i'm not really sure. Leatherface was just plain CREEPY. LOVE to see him and Michael Myers duke it out. All in all, This is the second greatest movie ever made and it is certainly a classic. The remake is decent, though its more of TCM 5 than a remake of the original. But if you see this one, pick it up, it'll be well worth your time.
Halloween (1978)
Not only the scariest, but the best movie ever made...
I was 9 years old the first time I saw John Carpenters masterpiece Halloween and at the time, I had NEVER heard of Michael Myers, I was a Jason Vorhees fan. Now fast forward, I am now 16 with about 4 Michael posters in my room and already have reserved tickets to see Halloween 9 when it comes out. And it all started with this movie. Halloween was a movie made in 1978, with a low budget, a slim $300,000, and a lot of heart. At the time, Tpbe Hooper had delivered Texas Chainsaw Massacre which had already terrified so many audiences across America, and no it was Carpenters turn. With little experience, and little money Carpenter used a creepy tune, a simple story-line, and a scary William Shatner mask to create the scariest film in history, This movie still scares me today and deserves much more than it is given. The scene where Michael puts the bedsheet over himself to fool PJ Soles's character and then strangled her with the phone wire was quite possibly the 3rd scariest moment in the history of movie cinema. Carpenter is very simple with this movie, with the amount of money he could not create the long chase scenes with a lot of gore that soon became famous. Instead he makes Michael seem more of a stalker than a killer, and then proceeds with the one-by-one approach as Michael slowly takes away all of Laurie Strode's(Jamie Lee Curtis) help and escape possibilities. Michaels old phyciatrist Dr. Loomis(Donald PLeasence) arrives in Haddonfeild to make sure Michael does not cause any carnage and tried to capture him. Michael successfully eludes Loomis and makes his way to Laurie. Michael attacks her not only physically, but also mentally as he plants the bodies of her dead friends and causes her to freak out. Laurie continuously hits Michael back but can never seem to permanently kill him. The closet scene where all seemed lost for our young heroin is, in my opinion, the most frightening movie moment ever. The last scene will make you r heart stop beating, I guarantee it.
All in all, Halloween is a classic, a legend at his best. This movie is yet to be topped and I doubt it will ever be topped. I will leave you with a few last words...
The Boogeyman is coming!
Secret Window (2004)
An extremely underrated film that deserves more than it gets
After reading Secret Window in Stephen King's "Half Past Midnight" and then discovering there was to be a movie starring who I think is probably one of the greatest actors in history, Johnny Depp, I was PHYCED. When it was released into theatres I saw it the day it opened, surprisingly, the theater was actually quite empty, they probably ad some slasher flick or sex-comedy i cant remember. But I was AMAZED. Johnny Depp easily mastered the role of Mort Rainy and he looked expeirienced as this is not the first time he has been forced to do a horror flick, Sleepy Hollow. Shooter terrified me with that one line "You stole my story". The script could not have been better if King HIMSELF had written it. The acting was superb, and I don't want to spoil it, but there is a little twist at the end, sort of like The Sixth Sense. The movie gets a 7/10 and just BARELY misses an 8.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
The best film of 2005
I watch nothing but horror, so 2005 was a fairly dull year for me, only one good movie, The Skeleton Key, and the rest (Amityvile Horror remake, White Noise) all left a very bad taste in my mouth. However this movie probably saved me. The Exocism of Emily Rose, as most know, is a true story based on what happened to a young girl in Germany. When I decided to watch it, I thought it was going to be a cheap rip-off of The Exorcist, oh how wrong I was. In fact, I might go as far as saying this film is even BETTER than The Exorcist. The sights that Emily sees while possessed are extremely creep, the blured out face, black bleeding eyes and looked very sik(the good way). The acting is terrific, and I truly felt sympathy for Father Moore as he told the story. I also felt a great deal of sympathy for poor Emily, she was just 3 years (I'm 16) older than me and just knowing that something like that could happen to me at any time truly terrified me. The reason I give this a 10 is because I see very little flaws in this great movie. A new classic.
The Faculty (1998)
Looks very dumb by preview but...
*the following DOES contain spoilers* When you see the trailer for this movie and you 14-18(like me) you will most likely think it is one of the dumbest movie that will ever come out, well, you'd be wrong. The Faculty is a very fun film and at some points does get kinda scary. The car scene where Zeke hurls Ms. Burke or whateverhernameis out the window and her head get torn of, and she PUTS IT BACK ON...that's just plain creepy. This movie is also very questioning at points and a bit surprising. You think you know everything about whats happening and BOOM!, you get hit with something new. With good acting, good special effects, and above all just plain fun, this movie is definitely worth seeing. 8/10
Jaws (1975)
one of the scariest movies ever made
1975, imagine, your in the water, nobody else around you, it's 11:00 at night, your having so much fun, and then, you feel a tug at your foot, you think its a fish, so you keep swimming, then it happens again, then your scare you look about 40 feet strait ahead, a black fin cuts through the water, you know what it is the second you see it, it's an 17-foot Great White Shark, you scream as your pulled under, and then your spit back out, the shark thought you were a seal and made a mistake, but now there's blood, and the shark can't refuse, this movie puts that fear into all of us, because of good acting, good directing, and the fact that sharks are in it, the very creatures which put more fear into us than ANYTHING. Speilburg is a masterful director, the actors are superb, and for a 1975 movie, the special effects are great. This movie is the starting point for all the crappy shark movies now, don't waste time with them, Jaws or Jaws 2 (6/10) will do just fine.
