Cobra Kai: First Learn Stand (2021)
Love the show, but this episode reeks
I love the show. But the writing of this episode seems to be a couple decades behind the times
Toward the end of the episode, we witness a confrontation between Daniel and the hockey team. Apparently the writers thought we needed a 4 minute scene devoted to gay and misogynistic slurs about Johnny being Daniel's "boyfriend" and "lover boy", a hockey player being a "pussy", and Daniel being "Sally". But hey, at least the writers recognized the hockey players crossed the line justifying violence when they called Daniel's wife a "smoking hot brunette who needed a test drive". Really??
Am I missing something? Yes, the hockey players were supposed to be seen as jerks. But I really expected the main characters to be evolved enough to be offended by homophobia & misogyny long before the apparent last straw of a comparatively benign comment about Daniel's "smoking hot brunette" wife.
Interstellar (2014)
Mind blowing!
I saw this in the theater twice. Both times, at the end, there was an audible exhale from the crowd. After one of those times I heard someone say, out of breath, "THATS THE BEST GD MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!". When I made my bf watch it with me, at one point I looked over at him sitting awkwardly and he said "Hell, look at me!! I'm LITERALLY on the edge of my seat!" I've probably watched it 10 times now, unlike any other movie, and I get something new from it every time. The emotion, tension, cinematography, effects, science...I couldn't say enough. I truly thought it deserved best picture nomination, but that's just my layman POV.
The Remains (2016)
3 Stars because I just love horror
So this movie had potential. The filming location is perfect, it reminds me of Insidious and other great horror films. The idea was great, the writing was good for the 1st half, and 1/2 the actors were good. But obviously that's a recipe for less than 1/2 of a good film. The actress portraying the oldest daughter is melodramatic, even for a teenager. Just when the film has an opportunity to get interesting, it instead goes off the crazy rails. I say, watch this movie if you'd like to see a pretty Victorian house. Otherwise don't bother.
Charmed (2018)
Who cares?
I honestly tried to be open minded about this reboot. Honestly. I am a big fan of the original series and hoped for the best. But it's just a sad disappointment. It doesn't pay respect to any of the best parts of the original, right down to Halliwell Manor. I can only assume that reboots like this aim to entertain loyal fans of the original while capturing new younger fans, but it fails. It may seem trivial, but this new series constantly flashes text messages between characters on screen to create context and I detest it. My vision is barely bad enough to even need correction, but I surely can't read this nonsense without either pausing the show or reaching for my glasses. Frankly I refuse. But let's move on. The special effects are less believable than the previous version from 20 years prior. What the hell??!!! I tried to like it and gave up. I miss Shannen Doherty. I don't care if she's "hard to work with", she was the best part of the show.
