The Deer Hunter (1978)
It'll scare you with reality.
This great film is an unflinching, long look at war. The familiar themes of glory, or rectitude, or buddy-bonding, aren't present here. The movie's themes are the "real" themes of war; cruelty, fear, survival, mayhem, and guilt. Every 18 year old should see it senior year as an inoculation against future idiotic participation in war.
This film's potency derives from a great story, great directing, great acting, great cinematography, and great music. In the final analysis , the joy of watching such an exquisite film balances its sobering messages.
We can argue whether The Deer Hunter is or isn't the best Viet Nam movie, but if you see only Viet Nam movie, make it this one.
The Pope's Exorcist (2023)
Great if you've never seen a devil movie
No Script, no acting, no casting, no sense. Possessed by embarrassment.
The kid who is possessed should have been played by gollum. He's far scarier than the nice little kid they cast. The girl who played a typical '80s teenage girl was far scarier before the devil showed up.
The pope's exorcist, played by a German, Italian, Australian actor desperate for work, didn't make any sense. His Italian was horrendous.
The second string priest was a prop.
Given all audiences have been through since "The Exorcist", this film registers as nothing more than a quaint comedy.
Pathetically, they claim it's real at the end of the movie and claim the now-dead priest's books "are good". Yikes.
