Tower (2016)
As a current UT student, this movie means a lot.
As a current UT student, this movie means a lot. The tower used to just a landmark, but right now, it reminds me of the story of those brave men and women.
It is the first time I saw a documentary mixed with animations. Those animations piece the story together, and their connection with the real video is very smooth. They also provide a shocking contradiction between the animated characters and the real people 50 years later. This contradiction reminds me how long we have been forgetting those people.
Five Came Back (2017)
Spectacular
I have never seen any film made by those five directors, and right now I really want to dive into their films especially the ones made after the war.
The documentary shocked me with the cruelty of war and the terrible aftermath and moved me with the engagement of the directors.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
First Lego Movie for Me
The LEGO Batman Movie is my first Lego movie, and I am fascinated. It is much better than the recent Batman or Superman movie! There are lots of hilarious scenes, and I can't let go some music songs.
The plot is a little jumpy. I don't understand why some guys change their stands so quickly. However, it doesn't matter too much because kids can understand the story line quite well.
Then ending is very weird! I didn't realize that this is a Lego movie during most of the film, while the ending is, for sure, an exception.
Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Amazing Film
I have seen the new BBC mini TV series Witness for the Prosecution (2017). While I think it is good, lots of reviews say that it is far less pleasing than this movie. That's the reason why I watched this movie, and I have to agree with those reviews: it is beyond my expectation.
It is my first time seeing a film from the 1950s. Even I have known the plot; I am still very engaged all most all the time. I like the judge a lot. Even though there are not many lines for him, he showed his humor and charm. There is one more twist than the new version, and it makes lots of sense.
The last scene seems to be entirely unnecessary. Though, it gives answers to all questions. It is unnatural.
Moana (2016)
Well-crafted but slightly disappointing movie
It is a well-crafted movie from Disney that introduced some Polynesian culture to me. The whole story line is standard, but there were some humorous scenes here and there which kept me very engaged.
There are lots of songs in the movie. It might be a trend from Frozen since both have a princess as the leading character. However, I am a little disappointed about the quality of the songs, especially considering the involvement of Lin-Manuel Miranda who created Hamilton, a masterpiece.
I am little confused about the ability of the ocean. It is not consistent at all. It left me wondering why doesn't the ocean directly spray water all over the Te Ka?
Moonlight (2016)
As a foreigner, I didn't resonate much with the film.
I heard the film from the code switch podcast. Both hosts, Gene Demby and Shereen Meraji, spoke very highly of the movie. They also showed the clip of little's mom robbing little (little is the nickname of the young leading actor). It is a powerful scene, and I couldn't let go the film because of it. However, I didn't feel much when I saw it in the theater. It might happen because it is the second time for me, or I lacked the background knowledge. As a foreigner, I didn't resonate much with the film, though It is definitely a slow-paced movie with lots of details. I didn't get the core until I went through the reviews on IMDb.
The camera usage of the first part is good. It shows the depressing side of the bully. I really like it.
