Do-ga-ni (2011)
Too silent
I cracked up three times in the film. One when the kids start telling their accounts of what happened, two - when they sit near a beach and the lead actor tells the quote of Helen Keller, three - when the boy gets to know that he doesn't get to say his testimony in the court because he's grandmother forgave the criminal.
I never thought I will watch this movie till the end. I took three breaks ofc. Getting to know these true accounts I always think why is the world so cruel to kids. And to some people whatever's the age. Tears are up in my eyes, while writing this. How can people do this to kids? They're harmless and in this case they are hard of hearing persons.
While tears in my eyes for the second time I kept a mental note to start being kind to people. Whatever they do, whoever they are, however they behave. Just today I got to see a quote, I get a quote everyday morning at 8, so today's was "kindness is invincible". At the end of the film the human rights worker in a letter to the art teacher, says that 'I asked the girls what's the difference you are seeing before the court case and after the case?'
You know what they said? 'They realised they're precious like everyone else.'
Hearing this dialogue, I was assured that being kind to people is what we can do at the least, we don't know what the other person is going through or went through. So a smile and assuring words are the best support as a person we can do.
Mandela (2021)
Nelson Yogi Mandela Babu
The fundamentals of this film are strong. It starts of with a scene which establishes every main character and thier conflicts. We can even know the outcome of those conflicts, in which few are cliche but the writing is too engaging to even notice those cliche sub-plots. It has a smooth flow right from the beginning.
The comedy timing of the "side kick" is good. Yogi babu's performance is brilliant and it's too little of an appreciation to give that man. Every movie I'm watching past few days have great supporting characters and even more great casting for those roles, "Malik", "Sarpatta Parmbarai" and now this film added to the list.
Sarpatta Parambarai (2021)
Better than Madras.
I was not interested in watching this as Pa. Ranjith's films are deep in these caste and community stuff. I don't understand that clearly. Even while watching this film I only watched it in cinematic way and that's it.
The first half of the film ends at a point which I thought is the whole film is about. But then the set up made in the beginning and it's paybacks are clearly used in the second half of the film. There are many points to talk about this film but the acting of both the lead and the supporting cast are just wonderful. I can't talk about the historical accuracies as I don't know a single thing about that but I can see it's done with detail. Editing is done well but sometimes I felt that it was going too fast and choppy.
I usually don't like a leader/ gangster/ hero/ thug, etc going downhill shown in the movies like The godfather 2, Scarface, many more. I mean I like the above mentioned movies it's just that I'm fed up. You see, a guy becoming big and then due to his arrogance coming down as fast as he went up. That troupe is getting repeated and I'm getting sick of it. Thankfully it was just there for about 20 minutes in the movie.
This is really well rounded film. The story is solid, music is good (I never even heard that there's music, that shows it achieved its work), acting is brilliant, casting is done right, back-stories are there and are apt to the story.
I can just watch a straight movie made on the back story of "Daddy" alone. It's just a beauty. Those dialogues, that slang, that English. Loved that character.
Malik (2021)
Just upto the expectation Mark. Should've crossed that.
There is a lot happening in this movie, many sub-plots which are left open-ended, the duration is too long and there's no satisfactory ending for that duration. The First 40-Minutes of the film was set-up in a very engaging way where we feel we are up for a Godfather type of drama.
FaFa is a gem of an actor and I can say this without even watching the movie. Those multiple long takes are appreciable. All I missed was depth in some parts of the movie.
Mumbai Police (2013)
Good for its own time
This film is good in few topics. They've written all the characters with care but the screenplay is such a lag. There are many things to cut down the film and make a nice thriller instead of we witnessing the repeated score whenever the lead is thinking and it goes on for an entire minute.
Jagame Thandhiram (2021)
I mean this was supposed to be released for theatres
I mean this was supposed to be released for theatres.
So in recent times where movies are heading over to the OTT due to the pandemic I'm seeing statements like these. So I got to a conclusion on this matter which is - when people say they really liked the movie and it would've been great to see this type of flick in theatres the movie is really good in & out (in being the OTT and out being the theatres) it will be a good film wherever or whenever it's watched (e.g soorarai pottru). Now there's second type where we directly say what I said in the beginning (this being released for theatres) without really talking about the film is it good or bad etc.
JT comes in the second slot for me. It's more like a "fan's" stuff. There are few things I liked which are generic but liked them. That number plate showing "WHITE POWER" and its ironical ending. London, Madurai, cinematography, MUSIC, Dhanush, oh! Also those fights it felt somewhat realistic so cheers for that (really bored of anti-gravity fights). After "the family man's" half baked potrayal of a serious issue this movie showed it what they're really going through (though it's really little of what they've shown.. there's more to it which I don't think we have the hearts to see). I know it's different issue in these both cases but show some respect is all which is clearly shown in the film.
Coming to what I didn't like. The whole film is lacking somewhere. It doesn't have depth like the director's previous movies (no, not petta. Remove that from his filmography). The whole first hour is the same old "small town thug-going big city" gangster type except here it's country not a city and there's little hero worshipping too but that can be ignored. Also those bombs seemed way too artificial ugh!. I enjoyed petta while watching it on-screen. I enjoyed master while watching it on-screen but I couldn't enjoy, like really enjoy this movie on-computer-screen.
Sir (2018)
Sweet and simple
I usually am uncomfortable watching class-difference-love-stories without having any comercial elements to it. This too felt like that but I liked it for the same reason. They don't talk about the difference heavily just in a scene or two. But it's visible for us, the viewers from the beginning. The set-up is cool. Finally saw something good in this genre.
Krack (2021)
Nothing to get krackified
It was really nice watching a theatre movie in a theatre after a long gap. If at all this one released on an OTT, it would've gone downhill. Sure shot, No doubt.
It's just an average movie where the scriptwriters wanted to be as intelligent as possible and they succeeded too for a little bit.
Few actors are casted unwantedly. They doesn't have a depth in thier characters. Like a wasted opportunity.
Music is heavy. Not every song is good just one or two.
Middle Class Melodies (2020)
If only the movie is as entertaining as the climax.
We know by trailer what we're signed for and One hour into the movie there is nothing new or solid point to hold on to. We quickly loose interest in the characters. There's no flow or rythm to what's happening in the movie.
Coming to the love story we get exactly what we saw in the trailer there's no extra thing in their story.
Yes the Nativity is shown nicely but there's nothing strong for showcasing the village or its beauty. Same in the case of acting, main leads tried to act but there isn't anything to act for.
The only new and good thing I liked is few charcters and thier storyline. Even though we have seen these types of troops a lot these days but this film showed them in a new way.
Match Point (2005)
A good recap.
After reading crime and punishment two months back, this is the first film I've seen in which the theme or plot is inspired or taken reference from the book.
So, coming to the movie I was little uncomfortable watching Chris juggle his life between the most important women in his life. But that's that. The final outcome or the final thoughts on this film is very positive. There are many things to talk about this one but I'll just mention what I liked the most. The tension we feel while we read that Raskolnikov is going to kill the old woman and her sister was recreated very well in this murder scene prior to climax. Even the after effects of the murder are shown quite interestingly where the jewelry is thrown into the river.
Well, there's a lot more on the psychological effects on each character but you get it when you see it.
Jersey (2019)
A film to remember
Yes! For who all know Nani... He is back with jersey. This is the film that reaches beyond Your expectations (only if your into drama-movies). You'll smile, cry but come out of the theatre after clapping with a good feel. The music is too good to be noticed it just goes with the flow, we can just feel it. Cinematography is good.
