A cardboard box
25 January 2023
This is like if you took a cardboard box, put four Hello Kitty stickers on it and tried to sell it off as genuine Sanrio. Kind of an OK cardboard box though. If you forget your expectations of watching something even remotely Pratchettian, it's kind of cute. It's just an... interesting choice... to base a TV show on some books and then not use any of the characters or storylines from those books... So now Discworld meets Blade Runner but also a musical? Fine. Storytelling is OK up to the last two episodes where everything just goes bananas and you realise a dragon is supposed to be terrorizing the city but you forgot because no acts of terror ever occur (almost). And also the dragon is made of smoke? Points for making Goodboy (Erroll wasn't a perfectly good name?) a dragon and not a wyvern. What's up with one of the villains changing allegiance for no reason, because suddenly they love goodness so much? Where did the Summoning Dark (or was it the Dark in the Dark?) actually send people? We know why Carrot is so tall but why is Cheery? Why is Ankh Morpork (normally situated on the Sto Plains) surrounded by desert? Et cetera. I have so many questions. Alas, no answers.

I used to love this
4 June 2022
So I grew up in the 90's and I used to LOVE this movie and aspire to be just as beautifully forlorn as Winona or as sorrowfully rebellious as Angie. Even as aggressively mysterious as Brittany Murphy (God rest her soul). Yes, I was a goth. Watched it again now, 20 years later, during which time I myself have been an inpatient at a mental hospital for some periods of time. And all I see now are just a couple of young women behaving like spoiled brats in a setting where other people are trying to deal with very real medical problems. It's so disrespectful and immature. It's absolutely fine to feel bad, have anxiety, feel depressed and even suicidal. Even running away is quite understandable if you're being held against your will. However it's not OK to be mean or rude to other patients or staff. Lisa is not cool. She's just a mean girl. Susanna is not cool. Her racist rant towards the head nurse is extremely off-putting. If someone on my ward would have acted like those girls I would have given them a good talking-to. I want to give it 1 star but getting 4 for nostalgic reasons. The book isn't much better either. Do not recommend.

Great and instructional
30 June 2021
I loved this movie as a child and I finally watched again as an adult. It was still great. There are very few jokes that would be called "problematic" even in year 2021. The first being that Gösta Ekman's character has a "funny lisp" and the other being that Margareta Krook plays the right wing politician Gösta Bohman. Having women play male characters to demean them is kind of old... However there might be a part of the joke that I don't understand since I wasn't alive at the time. And also there is a slight facial resemblance so that might be the whole of the joke. Also that Margareta Krook is dressed as Prussiluskan, the strict childcare worker from Pippi Långstrump.

Anyway, as usual, it's kind of depressing when political satire from the 70s and 80s is still relevant today. It's funny satire though.

And also you will learn a lot about Swedish politicians of yore which is useful for crosswords and Trivial Pursuit. Just last week there was a crossword with Ola Ullsten which I hadn't known without watching this movie as a child. Great!

I'm crying
4 July 2020
This is the most feelgood movie I've seen since Love, Actually. I've not felt this good since probably Mamma Mia. Just let yourself go with it and love life. It's Peik Lin, bak bak b****. PS I'm a little drunk.
