District 9 (2009)
not what I expected.
I guess I'm in the minority because I didn't expect a movie like this. I knew that it was a sci-fi movie but I was expecting something more like a modern remake of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. What I saw was more of a sick, DOOM-like video game version of aliens vs. humans and I guess I'm just tired of seeing that sort of juvenile crap.
Why is it necessary make a movie where characters are being blown into ground beef-like chunks? The worst part about it was that the audience cheered every time was someone or something was blown to bits. OK, I know, some crazy CGI rendering was involved but it just seemed like we were enjoying a gladiator match and the audience wanted blood. I guess the movie was OK but based on the TV previews, I thought it was going to be more "informative" rather than a violent mess.
So what did we get out of it? Um, this review, disappointment, and I suppose the hope that someone makes something more original than this. Blowing up people, aliens, shooting people with pigs and, and... just sick of crap like that.
The acting was OK as far as acting goes. The music was strange and although I enjoy surreal ambient music, I'm not sure how it was used in this movie.
Oil Storm (2005)
eh... it could happen...
It wasn't bad. Most of it could happen but probably not as severely as it was portrayed. Still, the potential for these events are an ever-present possibility and probably a good reason to actively seek out alternative fuel sources. Artistically, it was well done and cause for ponder. Many of the events portrayed in this documentary are real events that are happening on other countries. The scenarios seem very real. The documentary portrays some dismal events and I think it could have offered some potential positive outcomes rather than having such a pessimistic outlook on a very real dilemma. Like it or not, the events portrayed could happen but these shows need to focus also on how we solve the problems.
