Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Why is it so hyped?
Too many loose ends, ridiculous ending, not even B-level acting from the VIPs (special characters that show up later).
Why colour your hair red? C'mon.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Weird pace, forced cringy hiphop soundtrack
Big fan of the original. This sequel is just embarrassingly bad. Extremely weird pacing with awful editing.
Didn't anyone on the set yell out "cut cut .. one more take" ? Because the whole movie needs another take.
Huge admirer of Eddie Murphy, loved his performance in "Dolemite is my name" and was hoping he would continue in fine form (also Craig Brewer the director).
Sadly Eddie's performance is the weakest one in the movie. Can it be his worst performance yet?
In the lead up to the movie I watched Eddie's interviews where he claimed "we have gone above and beyond with the sequel". The end result couldn't be further from the truth. Awful direction, filled with lame and cheesy "Kardashian" type jokes just to keep up with the times. It just seem so forced.
I wished they kept the R rating and the grimy, grainy dirty New York look of the original. This movie looks so crisp, almost like a HD soap opera tv show.
The original was such a classic because of the "raw" feeling that the supporting cast like Frankie Faison (it's a damn shame what the did to that dog) contributed with. Nothing like this in the new one.
Feels like a bad SNL sketch. Clean, lame, weird and without charm. I felt robbed.
Pelé (2021)
Copy of the Maradona documentary
I enjoyed this simple documentary but would've appreciated if they tried their own formula. I couldn't help but to think through each scene that "wow.. That's pretty much a copy of the score, how the music settles down, imagery of that scene from Maradona documentary" and then the next scene comes and the same feeling. They should pay royalties to the person who scored the Maradona doc.
As a football aficionado I enjoyed this. I
It's basically an over the shoulder type doc, very simple. Very average.
Bir Baskadir (2020)
Slow, real, un-turkish series
Surprisingly good. Skips the ridiculousness of typical Turkish melodrama. This was HBO type production.
Director does stunning work and the cinematographer does even better. Stunning visuals.
It's not fast paced, recommended for those who like a slow burn.
Shahsiyet (2018)
Good for Turkey, otherwise average
If you're looking for a ZeroZeroZero, Sopranos, True Detective or Breaking bad... this ain't it.
I come from Turkey and understand why it's gotten a lot of praise. Turkish series tend to be more like telenovelas and filled with cheesy drama. This one has more flair and it is darker in the style of above mentioned series.
So it's the first "serious" attempt of making something other than a "Turkish days of our lives".
The high score is a bit inflated, much like Indian movies tend to have higher scores than they should..
Just my opinion.
It's filled with many cliches and cringy moments. It's unable to shake off typical Turkish entertainment stereotypes, the poorly acted small town drunk or the unnecessary love interest and some parts of the series where you go " okaaaay... they should've just cut that out.. thats just pure ridiculousness"
Kudos; To the cinematography and visuals. Everything production wise are for the most part top notch and..
the lead role by Haluk Bilginer is amazing and a joy to watch. He basically carries the whole series. Absolutely charismatic. Actually that's an understatement.. He is fantastic!
It's tough writing a review without spoiling and ruining it for everybody else. Just keep your expectations low and you might enjoy it.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Even in quarantine, you'll have trouble being entertained
I don't mind a period piece, I don't mind a "boring" movie per se, it can be well done, but this is just ridiculous.
Two women staring at each other for 2 hours, nice scenery every 30-40 mins, *spoiler* throw in some lesbian sexual tension and you have this movie.
I get why critics love this movie, it's a proper snobfest.
The bourgeoisie can say "this is a movie that only the best can understand"
If I have to use an analogy, this movie is like extra smelly cheese, if that is what you consider nice taste..
Well, bon appetite.
