Orphan (2009)
I loved it!
Yes, this review definitely contains spoilers, so please don't read on if you haven't yet seen this movie.
Orphan is a spectacular, incredible, awesome movie. When I first saw the trailer of it, I kind of knew that I would probably want it. Now, it's really not like me to go and buy movies without first watching them just to see how they would be, but this movie was pretty amazing. I absolutely love pretty much everything about Orphan. I thought of Esther as just an evil little girl doing terrible things. Yes, she seemed to be a child committing vicious crimes, but I really didn't think much of it, never thought that there could have been more to it, as I was sure there were certain other cases with other young children doing those types of crazy things as well. The tag line did say, "You'll never guess her secret," so I knew that there may have been a little bit more to her than just being an evil little girl. But I NEVER would have guessed that she was actually a grown woman with dwarfism. I never would have guessed that at all. I at first thought the twist was a little unreal and ridiculous, but I've grown used to it and actually kind of liked it. Before the twist came, I thought that maybe she was something evil or supernatural, especially hearing in the trailer when Kate said that the orphanage she supposedly came from had never heard of her. I also looked at this movie more as a horror film than a psychological thriller. There were lots of signs that Esther may have been grown, like her knowledge about the F word in terms of sex, the way she handled that gun, and the castration threat she made to Daniel. I must say that when she held that gun to little Max's head, I thought, "Oh my God, she is freaking crazy!" But I thought Esther was just a very mature nine-year-old, really precocious beyond her years. And being that young, she could have been from a country where she might have been exposed to things that were way more mature. And I also kind of knew that Esther would try and seduce John sometime in the movie, even though she was supposedly a child. Even though John may have cheated once, I knew he wouldn't try to get with a "child." She seriously does have a mental problem, because anyone would know darn well that a person might not always have been able to seduce a married man. There was no reason for her to get so upset over it when he turned her down. I also thought the little girl Max was incredibly beautiful and adorable. I also thought Dr. Browning was a total idiot as a psychiatrist, incredibly stupid. And I could not stand John. He really got on my nerves and annoyed me. He ignored completely every sign that Esther was some serious trouble. And it really did annoy me that he had to cheat on Kate. I am in no way trying to sound biased or stereotypical, but stupid men would find any freaking reason to want to cheat, and it just gets on my freaking nerves very badly. I also thought Vera Farmiga's acting could have been a lot better in the movie. I expected a more shock and terrified reaction when she saw John lying on the floor stabbed to death and a whole lot of blood around him. I knew she was sedated with some kind of drug, but still. But I certainly thought Isabelle Fuhrman did a WONDERFUL job. She is a great actress and may just have a wonderful future and marvelous career ahead of her. I loved this movie very much and thought it was incredibly great. Even though it would have been better with the earlier drafts of the script I read about on IMDb, this movie was awesome nevertheless. Yes, it would have made the story more amazing and wonderfully real if Esther indeed was molested by her father, which got her some sexual knowledge at a very early age, and her thing for trying to hit on married men who were her adoptive fathers. The other drafts were great too, such as Esther being a grown-up prostitute for years, and then faking being a child to get her to stay out of prison, or the fact that she was disgusted with her dwarfism: being an adult trapped inside a child's body, but not as good as the first one I read. This movie was wonderful and amazing, and I give it ten stars. I loved it!!
Odd Girl Out (2005)
Extremely Heartbreaking!!
Every time I watch this movie, it breaks my heart and sometimes reminds me of the problems I go through at my high school. I could not believe how mean and nasty those girls were to Vanessa Snyder. What I truly could not believe was how Vanessa's "friend" Stacey could clearly betray Vanessa like that and hurt her so viciously. I'm sure some of us knows how it feels to be hurt so badly by someone whom we thought was our friend, let alone someone who will not put on an act and just be outright nasty to you like Nikki. It is not that confusing to determine that Stacey is a fake; she truly wanted to hurt Vanessa and was not at all her friend. Just like me, Vanessa is a very emotionally sensitive person, she can get hurt very easily, but unlike her, I try to stay as far away from my back-stabbers as possible. I would never again be friends with the people who have hurt me nor give them a second chance in the risk of being hurt badly again. I used to make that mistake many times, and I have learned from it and paid the consequences. I can not believe that Vanessa's will and self-esteem were so low that she kept forgiving Stacey and was only setting herself up to be in more trouble and be hurt more wildly and that she tried to kill herself. If I were Vanessa, I would never again have been friends with Stacey the very first time that Stacey hurt her and caused all those girls to be ugly and nasty to her. And as for those hateful, nasty instant messages they would always send Vanessa, not only should Vanessa have printed them out, but her mother should have taken those nasty messages to the school board and to the police as clear, cruel evidence of those girls' nasty crimes, since the principal did not seem to take the matter very seriously, and those girls should have been heavily charged and punished. Nothing too much was done about those nasty girls, Vanessa, her mother and the principal kept treating the problem so lightly; I would have expelled the girls from school and never allowed them to graduate. Those girls seriously did not get the message when Vanessa tried to kill herself, they just kept on teasing her so badly about it; I could NOT believe those nasty hate messages they sent her after her suicide attempt, when the girl literally almost died. Those kids obviously did not care how badly they hurt Vanessa, they would never stop at it, they would never stop to think how far they would be going. I seriously can not believe and fathom just how mean and nasty human beings can be to each other; it is just unbelievable to me and always will be. How can people be so evil and heartless and not at all think about or give a hoot what the consequences would be? Do they not get it? I do not have the heart to bully someone for no reason at all, and I find no reason at all too. I am a completely sweet, lovable, down-to-earth person to anybody. Unfortunately, there are way few people like me and too many nasty people in this world.
A Little Princess (1995)
Beautiful!
A Little Princess is really a completely beautiful, amazing, astounding movie that draws you in from start to finish. It's so inspiring to see a super rich, young girl, who goes all the way down towards being poor and penniless, still being able to maintain her dignity and sweetness aside from that evil Miss Minchin. Now, everyone knows that all of that magic you read about in fairy tales, stories and books are not real, such as a ten-headed demon, arrows containing yellow poison, and a doll that moves around when you leave the room. However, it is still perfectly alright to indulge and imagine such things if it really makes you comfortable, and it probably is the only way to maintain your sanity when in a hopeless situation; it may be the only way to survive in this cruel, nasty world. Also, because all of those magic things are not real, that is still absolutely no reason and excuse for people to be evil and nasty such as Miss Minchin and those others; no matter what Miss Minchin says and how evil people can be so, it is still alright to have a creative mind and a beautiful imagination and to indulge in heavenly fantasies. We need more people like Sara Crewe in this world to totally lighten it up! This world may surely be completely nasty and cruel, but there can also be a more beautiful and loving world, and we really don't need magic and make-believe to prove that nor need it in order to make people happy. That's a great moral that anyone should have learned from watching this movie. This was some terrific acting with a wonderful cast! A job well done!
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Amazing!
Mrs. Doubtfire is an incredibly wonderful movie that I love so much! It's the type of movie that touches your heart and makes you laugh good. My main objective to discuss here was that Robin Williams had done such an amazing job; every time I watch this movie and get to the part where "Mrs. Doubtfire" enters through the door of Miranda Hillard, I always forget that it is Miranda's husband Daniel Hillard underneath that disguise but maybe in fact a real Mrs. Doubtfire. I always look at the old woman as though if she were a real Mrs. Doubtfire, because the acting is just so convincing and so real. I love the old lady, Mrs. Doubtfire! It only shows how desperate a father can be to see his own children, and most importantly shows that he loves his children that much and cannot live without them. I thought it was incredibly sweet in the end for Miranda to talk to the judge and have all those legal conditions for Daniel taken off his shoulders in order to see his children. I love Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire's characters, because those are the kind of great people children need for emotional and inspirational guidance. Mrs. Doubtfire brought out the best in that whole family when really it was Daniel Hillard who had done that! That was to prove that Daniel was way much a better man and a better husband and father, and he had greatly proved that to Miranda and his three children. I also wanted to add that when Daniel calls his ex-wife, using all those fake voices pretending to be those fake, non-existent, make-believe people, his voices all sounded too very much the same, and Miranda could have easily recognized that all those voices sounded too similar and that in fact it could have really been her ex-husband. Also, Miranda's reaction frightened me a bit when she found out that it was her ex-husband pretending to be Mrs. Doubtfire the whole time. This movie is emotional, funny, outstanding, and an excellent job well done! Robin Williams has great, funny talent!
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Insane!
Whilst I really like this movie, Cruel Intentions, I think that it is remotely insane for all those young teenagers to be having so much sex. Where were Kathryn and Sebastian's parents at that whole summer? I think it is insane that while Kathryn and Sebastian have so much sex, they don't receive any sexually transmitted diseases or become pregnant. Just because those teenagers are super, mega rich, it does not mean that in the long run, they won't turn a corner and make a mistake, causing one of those two things to happen as a consequence. If Sebastian clams to have slept with so many girls, why is his body so clean of disease? I know those wild kids probably use condoms and birth control, but those things can not always be one-hundred percent protective, especially if Kathryn and Sebastian will happen to sleep with someone who has AIDS, they both can really contract that disease no matter what. I don't think being super rich can be much of a factor in being fully well protected against diseases, HIV/AIDS, and pregnancy. Maybe Kathryn had her tubes tied and Sebastian had a vasectomy, but I'm sure the two want to have children. Landing twenty tricks a day with playing those dirty sex games, trying to degrade and destroy their innocent victims (Cecile and Annette), why don't Kathryn or Sebastian have any sexual consequences as well as Cecile and Annette sleeping with the gigolo Sebastian? It seems completely messed up that while a person is running free and wild, having so much sex, they do not receive any sexual consequences such as contracting AIDS, STDs or becoming pregnant. It's just crazy and does not make a lot of sense and is impossible! Who can have any ideas of how the things that Kathryn and Sebastian do are possible without any consequences? Who can make sense of it? I know that many prostitutes have sex and they don't seem to have any sexual consequences, though, I'm really sure they can at least pick up some diseases. That is my curiosity and wonder on this matter. I wonder who can make sense of these things.
Witch Hunter Robin (2002)
A Witch
I have the whole series of this on DVD, and as I view each episode and watch the story unfold, it just brings me down and totally depresses me. Must ALL Witches be hunted? What if a Witch doesn't even want to use their powers for evil? Is simply being a Witch just enough for the STN to want to hunt you? I suppose in Amon's case, a Witch must always be hunted, regardless of how one only CHOOSES to use his or her own power, for good or for evil. And as for Robin, just what IS the difference between a Craft User and a Witch (between using a "Craft" and actual Witch power)? She herself was considered and called one, because her "Craft" was "too dangerous." So does having a power or "Craft" automatically suggest that you are a Witch?
Why does it all have to depend on all the things Solomon Headquarters believes about Witches, or what many other people believe about Witches, even the people in Japan? There is either belief or disbelief, certainty or doubt, what's true and what's lies...but do any of us really know the TRUTH? Are ALL Witches evil? Should all of them be hunted? Shouldn't the way they CHOOSE to use their power determine whether they are good or evil, or does it not matter just as long as a certain individual who is suspected and accused of being a Witch is actually a Witch? That's how it was in both cases of Akio Kurosawa and Minori Nakayama. Just what IS the difference between a Hunter and a Witch? A Hunter and a Human? Aren't they all alike in one way or another? All the true answers lie deep within us viewers and the true craft deep dormant within Robin. There are just some things and secrets that can never be revealed or answered.
Samurai Chanpurû (2004)
Incredible and Hilarious!
When I first watched Samurai Champloo, I could not believe that such foul words would be used on an Anime show, and I certainly did not believe that such words were used so way far back in the early Edo Period in Japan. I also did not know that Vincent Van Gogh was known in Japan. Basically, a few times, all the show ever talked about was Western Europe. Was there really a war between Europe and Japan in those days?
I suppose that also way far back, things such as slavery, violence, murder, prostitution, statutory rape, and robbery were never lawfully prohibited in that country. I also couldn't see how such a woman could keep her figure and youth after birthing about six children in that time period, and having such an unfaithful husband who would hit on another fifteen year old girl. What has the world come to?
I suppose that all these things and the events that go on make this one absolutely hilarious anime show that I love so much! The more I hear all the foul-mouthed language used by Mugen, and all the hilarious things that go on between the three friends, makes me love this series all the more! Many of the people in that show are all so totally hilarious when either foolish or down-to-earth when it comes towards being in a crisis and making a decision. It all makes this show worth watching! HILARIOUS, Mugen, Jin and Fuu! Keep up the great comedy and have fun!
