Slow, flat, and anything but spooky
3 June 2017
Slow burn doesn't even begin to describe this movie, 30 minutes in and hardly anything has happened, no real story, no plot, flat two dimensional characters. I saw one reviewer saying if you like movies like It Follows then you'll like this movie, which is probably true because I found that movie tired and predictable with two dimensional characters as well. While it does attempt to add atmosphere and mood for me, at least, it falls flat even on that attempt. And finally it's yet another horror that has far too many religious notes for my taste. The one redeeming value the score was quite well done if you want suspense watch some classic Hitchkok or even old Scooby-Doo cartoons.

Nonsense Slasher
25 April 2017
It's a little eerie and in the beginning looks like there's some potential. A lot of reviewers said it stuck with them, the only thing that sticks with me is the overacting. The killer, which is easy to figure out from about ten minutes into the movie, makes no sense! The motives are ludicrous.

There are so many better eerie horror movies to watch. Anything by Alfred Hitchkok for example, at least he put in some thought and it made bloody sense.

waiting for them to die
19 July 2016
Is it scary? No not really, nothing that hasn't been done. The acting is mediocre and the main characters have no redeeming qualities. It's hard to connect with a spoiled apathetic brat. Ten minutes into the movie I was hoping she would die violently.

I don't much care for the parents either. I honestly spent the entire movie hoping the evil wins and they all die terribly.

There is far better suspense/horror movies out there. Sure there are far worse ones too but I wouldn't waist your time with a clichéd horror movie that can't even give you characters you can care about.

I give it a three out of ten for not being that scary, mediocre acting and story.

It might have been good
1 May 2016
It starts out with potential and then falls short.

It starts out well, the bounding around time lines isn't too hard to figure out and there are some amazing performances by stellar actors.

It quickly starts to feel like a very long movie and loses any basis for realism. They obviously didn't do their research, the scenario, characters and the characters motives all just fall flat and become totally unbelievable. As good as it starts it becomes nearly unwatchable.

It's sort of like watching a horror movie and yelling at the screen not to go in there or open that door. Instead you're wondering why a character would react that way or do or say what they just did in that situation because it makes no sense.

Despite great acting the plot, writing and directing are really just bad bringing down what could have been a good movie and intriguing thriller.

don't waste your time or your brain cells
17 April 2016
As soon as you're introduced to the protagonists of the film you want to slap them. After another two minutes I wanted to strangle them and we haven't even gotten to the meat of the film yet.

Now typically going into any creature feature you're not expecting much and when it's a cable show produced creature feature you're expecting even less. However it's never a good sign when you don't care at all about the main characters and you're waiting for characters to die.

They are beyond annoying and I didn't care what they went through, I was rooting for the demonic spirit creature to devour them preferably slowly and painfully.

I've seen cable produced creature features that were at least watchable but this was not one of them.

Flawed
15 April 2016
It takes a lot to hold my attention and this movie didn't do it. Like his other movies there were a lot of flaws which for me drew me out of the movie. Now if you're the type who can sit and watch a movie without arguing about the flaws and non-realism for a realistic movie then it won't matter.

As far as home invasion thrillers go it's not bad but I've seen better and I spent most of the time wondering what the characters were doing.

If you don't like supernatural horror movies and you don't think too much while watching a movie then it's probably great for you. Otherwise find another thriller.

Not thrilling or mysterious

Warning: Spoilers
I have not seen the original, didn't even know there was one until I began reading the reviews and I will definitely be watching the original after this as for this Americanized Hollywood version there is very little redeeming about it. Roberts does a wonderful job as a grieving mother, some of the supporting roles also did quite well. Many of the characters I had a hard time believing, including Kidman who seemed to be sleepwalking through this.

The story was so-so, the time transitions and camera work rather confusing at times. Very little if anything really differentiated the time lines and it took a few seconds to realize what time we were in for each scene, especially when all the characters look exactly alike after 13 years. Have i mentioned the bad camera-work? Which goes along with bad directing. I mean honestly how does swinging the camera back and forth for close ups with a box between them make sense for a good shot?

Despite the Oscar caliber cast it's not worth your time.

Worth a Watch but also Annoying
14 February 2016
It's not a bad movie at all, a decent thriller in many ways. However the female detective's character is well annoying, aggravatingly annoying. She has total blinders on and cares only about solving her one case. Her reactions to things make very little sense. It's what kept me from thoroughly enjoying the movie but despite that it's worth a watch.

The story is decent, not very original fairly predictable (although my standards of predictable are vastly different from most people so maybe you'll be surprised) and there are some very good performances by Brittany Murphy, Michael Douglas, Sean Bean and Famke Janssen and Oliver Platt.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay so I've only been watching for about ten minutes but this is awful. It's already got a bunch of plot holes and if she's such a Spermatophobic why didn't she sanitize the steak knife before performing the tracheotomy? Rosamund Pike's acting is underwhelming and hardly convincing. Her character, or perhaps just the actress herself is annoying, her personality is grinding at my nerves and her acting is maddening I don't think I can sit through the rest of this for that alone.

Aside from all that the writing and cinematography are bad, worse than things my friends and I put together in high school. Unless you are a huge fan of someone in this movie don't bother it's terrible.
