Smile (2022)
Started off well, but...
After seeing the first 15 minutes i believed i was about to watch a decent film but could i have been more wrong...
The first trauma scene with the patient is really well executed and that smile scared the shi out of me. But it seems the movie goes downfall after that. Every time we get a jumpscare and someone smiling at her it becomes less effective and horror is gradually lost. By the end of the movie i wasn't even scared.
And if you try to find meaning in all this, apart from the obvious evil forces threatening the protagonist, you will find a lot of plot holes that don't back up the theory that it is all an illusion and her trauma is causing all that trouble. Otherwise all of the victims wouldn't be connected through such a clear pattern.
Shôgun (2024)
Disappointed
I agree this show excells in many aspects, i.e. Production design, the use of the two languages, costumes, sound, etc... However when it comes to the plot i was expecting something else. I was looking for a more action based series, but instead i got endless political disputes and human relationships that didn't make too much sense (at least for my western mind)
When i say this i don't mean the story is not interesting and i'm sure it is very accurate and inspired by actual events. I just don't think it was the most appropiate story to tell for a tv show. On top of that, the ending just didn't deliver. Especially when the whole time we are told there's a huge battle incoming and in the end there is none. Not only that, we also find out that all the protagonist did was meaningless and it was all part of Toranaga's plan...
Prospect (2018)
Pedrito saved the movie
Prospect is about a space rush for harvesting a certain kind of gem found in another planet. We are not given much detail about the lore but the concept can be easily paralleled to the search for gold in the past centuries. Also, the whole movie can be seen as a western, but in space.
We follow a family -a father and his daughter- ,who make a living out of this activity, in their last run before the orbit returns to ... earth?
This is where the movie started to dislike me. From the beggining their relationship doesn't feel right. It is implicit that something is wrong with him and that something bad has happened to the mother. However, the story doesn't seem to bother and continues to show us their oddysey on this planet. Nothing ever happens that make these two bond and, when he dies, the girl continues with her life as if nothing had happened, showing little to no concern.
The second part of the movie though gets a bit better, when Pedro Pascal shows up and brings some good acting and human emotions that the story needed so badly. He is the main reason why the movie (kind of) works and in the end doesn't feel like a waste of time.
In my opinion, the little girl (Cee) never worked as a character and neither did the actress shine with her performance. To be honest the storytelling could've been better too. What does that smile at the end even mean?? What was the point of the whole thing? Losing your father AND any chance to get rich but SMILE because you survived?
One last thing i would like to add is the time factor that is mentioned so many times throughout the movie. It could've worked well IF ONLY we knew what a goddamn cicle is!!! All we know for sure is that they need to hurry, but instead all they seem to do is waste time and walk slowly. In the meantime the audience is sitting wondering how much time they have left and given no clear answers whatsoever (yeah, i know about her clock, but it doesn't look like a countdown to me).
Perfect Sense (2011)
Definetly deserves more recognition
I'm so glad i stumbled upon this movie. I was looking for science fiction films when this one showed up. After watching it i realized there was more to it than that.
It is a love story. It is beautiful cinematography. It is great acting. It is joy as well as it is sadness. It is surprise and it is entertainment.
My recommendation is that you watch this film without reading any summary or watching any trailer (that includes this review i guess).
Movies like this deserve more recognition. With only a simple but strong idea and a couple good actors you can make a wonderful motion picture, and Perfect Sense is the proof of that.
The Warriors (1979)
Weird in a good way
What can i say... i just saw the movie and i am still wondering why i liked it so much.
The plot is quite simple, some gangs are ridiculous, and the context... well, we are hardly given any context. I guess it is set in a near future where crime has risen to extreme levels.
However bad i thought it would be, to my surprise i found that it wasn't. There's something about the way the story is told that makes it super entertaining, every other corner the Warriors find another threat they must confront with. The movie is also very stylish and every gang has its own costume design. What i liked most was the main character Swan, he has some Heath Ledger kind of look. Not sure about the girl though, her intentions weren't clear but she made a good companion for the boys i guess.
Vivarium (2019)
Surprisingly not bad
For a movie rated so low i must say i was pretty impressed. Some may say it symbolizes living in a suburbia or whatever, but for me it is a pure horror film. Ever since the boy shows up to the couple, tension does nothing but increase. We as viewers know something is not right, as well as the young parents, but don't know exactly what. Eventually, the decision they have to make is whether saving themselves or hang on to humanity and raise the baby as they are told to.
Of course this film is not the greatest as it lacks a bit more accuracy or realism. I even agree that it feels rather slow from time to time. But i don't think this average rating is fair at all.
Hauru no ugoku shiro (2004)
Unclear
I didn't read the novel and i guess that's why i was so confused when the movie ended.
After that i looked up the eplanation of the whole story and ending and realised there's so much this movie doesn't tell us: the curses, why there is a war, who the witch is and what she really wants, etc. It is almost impossible to figure those things out on our own without a little context.
It is a shame because it could've been a great experience but instead, for me, it was just two hours of trying -and failing- to understand the plot. Damn 600 characters is a lot. Damn 600 characters is a lot Damn 600 characters is a lot.
The Gray Man (2022)
OK for netflix standards
Entertaining. It certainly provides what it promises. Apart from that, don't expect much else from this film. Turn off your brain and enjoy the explosions.
Signs (2002)
Shallow
I didn't really get the point of this film. It was never clear for me if it was science fiction, fantasy or a drama. I think that not even M. Night knew for sure what kind of movie he wanted to make, so he tried all at once to see what happened. The result is kind of confusing and, most of all, boring.
Panic Room (2002)
Good idea, poor execution
Panic room is an entertaining film that kept me on the edge of the seat in a few occasions. However, it is full of plot holes and errors that ruined it for me little by little.
The worst part is that it makes policemen look like complete idiots when all they were doing was their job.
Commando (1985)
Too silly, even for Arnold standards
I knew it wasn't going to be a masterpiece when i decided to watch it. I just needed my dose of Arnold's muscles and funny quotes that i very much (to my shame) enjoy. However, this time they took it to far.
The plot is hillarious, almost unbelievable. Why depend on just one man to overthrow an entire government?
The main villain is a joke, impossible to take seriously.
The stewardress? Well, she decided to take a day off and blow things up just for fun. I wouldn't resist either.
Looper (2012)
Even though it's not perfect, it's a must see for time travel fans
This movie is fantastic, especially when it comes to the time travel situations. However, that is also where it shows some plot holes.
The fact that in both timelines (the one from the old joe who gets killed and the one from the old joe who doesn't close his loop) the rainmaker becomes that person after her mother is shot and he is wounded in his jaw by TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE is a huge coincidence. In fact, i don't think it is a coincidence at all. For me, it's just a plot hole as the movie hints that in both timelines old joe did that, but he was alive in only one of them.
Nonetheless, Looper is a terrific film and a must watch for time travel fans like me.
Deja Vu (2006)
Good movie but no logic
If you are a time travel fan as me, you will probably end up confused after the ending. The thing is, he was able to change the past even though it was a time loop. That means that he was assigned to the case, travelled back in time, failed, the ferry explodes, repeat...
Why would he do anything differently in this time loop? As far as we saw, nothing had changed (he said that himself in Claire's house) so what led him to make a different decision?
The most accurate ending would be (unfortunately) if we saw the ferry explode once again, him and the girl dead and his pone ringing inside the bag as his past version of him approaches the crime scene and hears his own ringtone.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
How far would you go?
If you can take the gore, you will definetly enjoy this movie. It is a revenge story like no other, some kind of john wick commited to make a single person suffer. In order to do that, he must become the sort of man he is hunting: a monster.
Sputnik (2020)
A different kind of alien
As a fan of sci fi and space movies, i enjoyed this movie. Outer space however doesn't play a major role in the story. In fact, it unfolds mostly on earth while space is only used as an introduction and to explain the origin of the creature.
In general, this movie is innovative and has a few plot twists. It is't all about horror or action as it develops the relationahip between the alien and the scientists who study it (very much like arrival).
It may fall short on the second half but all in all i would recommend it.
Nobody (2021)
A bad copy of John Wick
Don't expect to find a meaningful story. Even though at the beginning the movie looked promising, the rest was full of nonsense action scenes and RED like comedy. I mean this guy could easily beat superman with his eyes folded.
El agente topo (2020)
Beautiful
I didn't realise it was a documentary until i rated it on imdb. In my opinion it qualifies as a very touching film, which gives us a powerful message about the elder and our commitment to them. I was hoping for a bit more at the end though, but the rest of the film makes up for that.
Gi-eok-ui bam (2017)
A copy of Oldboy
This movie tried to be a thousand films in one. Horror, thriller, mystery, etc. All in less than two hours and using every cliche and coincidence as they could. And, of course, this wouldn't have worked without using the hypnosis factor that had shown great results in Oldboy (the greatest Korean film). What could go wrong?
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
The movie "without plot"
For all of you who say that this film doesn't have a plot let me tell you... you're right! It has two!
On one side we have sharon and roman polanski, who don't need no introduction as we all know what happened that night.
Next to them lives a fictional character, Rick Dalton, who is struggling to survive in the film industry as he is becoming a "has been".
So i don't understand why people keep saying that it has no plot or that nothing happens, i suggest they watch the whole movie instead and enjoy good cinema
The Kings of Summer (2013)
Beautiful
Great story, good laughs and beautiful photography? Yes please!
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Complete waste of time
Like some user said in their review: not everything you don't understand is art...
I'm sure people who love this movie are just trying to look smart and i'm so full of them.
The Hunt (2020)
Stupid, just stupid
One of the worst films i've watched in my life. Idk what do people have in their minds to rate this piece of s&$# more than 1/10. I'm really upset i just spent an hour an a half watching this nonsense
High Score (2020)
Brief history of gaming
I for one enjoyed it. It is true that it does not make a deep analysis of every console or game it shows but it gives you an insight that helps you sort the history of gaming out. I loved every interview, every fun fact and even the visual style of the documentary
It Comes at Night (2017)
Nothing comes at night
It is one of those movies that make no sense (like most of A24 films), but this time most of us felt that way and i am so glad that happened. Most of the times these movies are so overrated...
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
I expected more
I feel like this movie could have scared me way more than it did. I understand it is a different kind of horror but at least they could've shown the witch at the end or something. Such a wasted opportunity...
