Broken Hill (2009)
Inspiring
A overcome odds movie set in the Aussie outback, what could go wrong🤣
The odd American accents seemed weird and there is some poetic licence with some of the music which is why it didn't rate a 10 with me but this is a great movie well worth watching. Loved it. The subtle character development was excellent and the emotion and very personal aspects of music were brilliantly and beautifully drawn.
Great filming & editing as well.
Some of the critics here said it moved at a slow pace but they missed the point. I found that was clearly part of the intent and charm, as it exemplified remote country life, gradually building to a powerful crescendos as you would expect from a great piece of music.
Hard Quiz (2016)
Best quiz on tv
Bizarrely Hilarious
Tom's whit has strongly developed and I suspect he is as surprised as anyone that this show is so good and popular but it could only work on the ABC.
Intelligent people with peculiar hobbies, interests and obsessions answering equally peculiar questions so meticulously researched by Tom..
We all have at least one friend with an excessive and obsessive amount of knowledge on an often seemingly pointless subject that becomes interesting just by their passion.
The contestants give as much as much as they get from Tom forming a special partnership that is truly entertaining.
We all know that trivia and quizzes can be fun but this takes it to another level.
One of the best parts is the unique and almost totally worthless prize which is in itself an attraction.
Falling Skies (2011)
Clever and original
Parallels to the invasions of lands by technologically advanced countries over the less advanced do occur; there is the Occasional discrepancy that can be overlooked, and some American rah rah but this is original with many twists, moral challenges and surprises.
Call the Midwife (2012)
Beautiful
I imagine that every single person involved in this program, from writer to actor, cleaner to prop sorter, everyone, carries a great deal of well deserved pride to have been involved.
Each and every episode brings laughter and tears, issues of public health, the challenges of poverty, social justice, resilience, pure joy and love.
The attention alone to detail is amazing.
The series educates and informs while reminding us of recent history along with the changes in society and how we live, dress, eat, work and interact.
I buy each season on DVD for my wife but we enjoy each and every episode, together.
The Song of Names (2019)
One of the most beautiful films
Magnificent
The musical score alone encapsulates the soul of this story. You do not really watch but experience.
The only real spoiler I will offer is that the title is eventually, but powerfully revealed in conjunction a very human perspective.
A must see.
Endeavour (2012)
Brilliant
I don't think I ever watched Morse but surely will now. This is the captivating evolution of a young Morse beginning his uncertain career but as a highly intelligent, knowledgeable and persistent man with many faults, he battles to find truth with an incredible ability to see beyond the obvious to find the complex truth while sometimes appalled at others not seeing all as plainly as he.
Highly Addictive.
The Father (2020)
Anthony Hopkins is amazing
I was getting confused and bored before I realised that was a small part of the necessary experience and at that realisation was drawn into the journey of dementia and the revelation of the importance of a simple watch. (You'll understand when you hear 'Anthony' explain in a throw away line of great importance.
Anthony Hopkins' performance is incredible as he draws you into a distorted but honest reality.
Not for the feint hearted or those without compassion but a must see for those seeking to understand dementia.
The Merger (2018)
Bloody beauty mate
This is sooooo Aussie and so contemporary
Like an Aussie actors who's who and so funny.
Great music as well
Person of Interest (2011)
Brilliant
Great concept brilliantly Scripted and performed.
Each character has flaws but depth and sincerity of conviction.
The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee (2020)
Nooooooo
Why did I watch this!
Why was it released!
A movie made to gain a tax right-off?
Destination Wedding (2018)
Painful
Keanu and Winona are of course brilliant but this movie is just painful
Depressing.
Those who find it funny are presumably American because they have a uhm .....unique sense of humour.
Top End Wedding (2019)
Brilliant!
So great to see such quality
So entertaining while being respectful and true to culture as it currently exists.
Loved every minute
I've got to visit the areas and islands depicted.
Spotlight (2015)
A story needed to be told, told well
This is an award winning story about what it takes to put together an award winning newspaper story that just happens to be true.
I am so very glad this movie was made, am so very sorry for the many victims of predators and so very horrified and angry that I didn't fully appreciate the extent of the crimes against children & adults and how extensively and successfully they were covered up.
Every Catholic should watch this movie to understand what has happened and what yet needs to be done..
Every reporter should watch this movie to learn that they need. To investigate.
Everyone needs to watch this movie to know why we must all be vigilant because it is not just the Catholic Church but every church, scout hall, school, courtroom, police station.... anywhere a predator hides.
Face/Off (1997)
Stupid concept
So two men who are of different builds and heights and accents/voices; supposedly get face transplants in a day and come back completely recovered with everything changed with no indication of surgery whatsoever.
Why on earth would two acclaimed actors take on these roles with such an absurd concept.
Were they short of cash or did they lose a bet
In a word... stupid
I turned it off halfway through. Just too ridiculous.
Septembers of Shiraz (2015)
Powerful & disturbing
I read other reviews and ratings and wondered if they watched the same movie or maybe a poor pirated copy.
It is a disturbing story because it portrays life under a hypocritical & corrupt regime that uses religion as an excuse to perpetuate cruel acts of violence, sadism, theft, torture and brutal murder.
It does not tell the whole story but gives an insight into the impact on one family and those around them.
I grew up hearing these stories and by coincidence sat across a table today from a young woman whose true story was so extraordinarily similar.
