The King of Staten Island (2020)
Pete made me smile
To be honest I only really review movies that are either really bad when I was expecting fan faire... or if the movie is exceptional when I was expecting a good 2 hour nap.
I really enjoyed watching this, to the point that I found myself smiling throughout and I didn't mind hanging out with Pete for 2 hours and 15 minutes. He was so relatable and oddly likeable, that I now want to have a joint with him and laugh until my cheeks hurt (and I don't smoke pot).
It wasn't a role far from who he is, and I don't really think Pete could ever be a great character actor, that wasn't the intent. So if you're looking for a Forrest Gump kind of transformations from his persona don't bother. Nonetheless his portrayal of him-playing-himself with a different name was an excellent casting.
Papillon (2017)
Calling all Manly Men...
I haven't seen a movie worthy of my typing skills in a quite a while; either positively or negatively motivated. I found this epic tale riveting that kept my attention from the beginning to the end. It's unfortunate that is film was released via the film festival route to a smaller audience, it deserves a wider look. Charlie and Rami's portrayal of these two mens relationship was pure love... without the erotic undertones.
If your a man with a solid grip on your sexuality and open to expressing emotions, I suggest taking your best buddy to see this. You both will walk out with a heart filled smiles on your faces.
True friendship is when you always do, and never want or expect anything in return.
The Lovers (2015)
Bad...bad...bad
An absolute waste of time. The storyline made no sense, the characters were very weak, and I didn't see the "love", for a movie entitled "The Lovers". The story could have played out better; there should have been an ending to the 1770's relationship, and how the ring got in the ocean and not to mention how the rings could have brought him back to life. Don't get me started on that 300 year old witch or ghost that had the second ring. The premise behind the rings should have had a different outcome whereas the soul of a present day living Tulaja should be his soul mate, not some dumb treasure chaser that acted like Gollum from Lord of the rings. I'm no playwright but this should never have been produced, are we that hard up for a good script that just about anything can get green-lighted. I am a fan of Josh's...or rather I was. He's been away for quite a while; he should have picked a better project for his second coming. I'll give him a second chance only because of his prior work. If the next one sucks too he'll hear it from me. Next time IFC Films wants to throw away 35 million dollars I'll play catch with them.
