Alien (1979)
An iconic product of its time whose spectacle may never be repeated with how this genre is sold nowadays.
It seems risky nowadays for Production to invest heavily into all the plastic, rubber and paper it takes to make the miniatures, set dressing and costumes for a movie like this. That's why it makes me sad when I re-watch Alien (1979) and get reminded that it is very hard to find the feeling this movie gives me in contemporary horror sci-fi. Watching Alien I am transported to another world. The film slows down at all the right moments and allows the ambience to be quiet when it needs to be. You really feel the powerlessness and isolation. To me Alien (1979) serves as an undying testament to just how immersive and memorable practical effects can truly be over CGI and how important moments of quiet and slowing down the action are to ultimately grant the desired horrific or spectacular payoff. And just when you think all the payoffs have paid off, the movie continues to surprise and delight.
CODA (2021)
A very poignant film for the times
For anyone with an unconventional family structure I think this film will resonate, as it celebrates the strength and value of not only a differently abled group but also of people under duress in general. The film touches on many different subjects over its runtime, which surprised me as I expected more focus on the central premise. However, coming out of it I found myself thinking about social subjects that had never crossed my radar quite in this way until now. Especially enjoyable when viewed in a family setting!
Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! (2020)
An explosion of creativity for the brain, sincere and full of heart
I really enjoyed how 'free-form' the twelve-episode piece felt. As though the creators' vision was coming together more organically than any high profile anime I have seen in recent years. My favourite part of all is the three main characters, each very different in her own way but an indispensable member of the team. All the characters felt very human, with all their talents and personal challenges given plenty of time to shine despite the relatively short total runtime. I found the plot airtight with all its ups and downs coming beautifully to fruition at the end. The art is very expressive, dipping into unorthodox styles to show what animation is like from the maker's perspective. I recommend this anime to aspiring artists or makers of any creative project, as I can see how the way it tells its story could be enormously inspiring to anybody who develops a piece of work in collaboration with others.
Sutorenjia: Mukô hadan (2007)
Simple tale but well told and in a beautiful setting with interesting characters
My only gripe is that most of the characters receive little to no character development, while fight scenes last a little overlong for a short movie like this one.
If you can look past the chinese being plain cast as heartless baddies in this film, the historical setting is actually quite enchanting. I also really liked the musical score. The story has very high highs and low lows...it takes you on a journey and keeps you engaged throughout. There wasn't a single dull moment.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Thought-provoking, inspiring film that looks long and hard at tough topics
The film made me uncomfortable with long, painful quiet bits that let all the pain the characters are experiencing set in. The events are set against the breathtaking backdrop of New Zealand plains and mountains although the story takes place in Montana. I was deeply immersed with the solitary, adventurous shots that explore the area and time period. For those seeking a movie that goes somewhere very wild and inhospitable following very human and flawed characters, I recommend this film! Maybe it will inspire you like it did me.
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Fantasy movie that doesn't do anything you haven't seen before but still feels meaningful if you let it
Best not to overthink the adventure in my opinion. It's a world to get lost in and that's about it! For what I was after, it ticked all the boxes. Intriguing landscapes, colorful characters and a culture painted with broad enough strokes that you can fill in the blanks with your imagination.
Encanto (2021)
Lovely family film to learn more about Colombian traditions and culture
I am excited to see where disney studios go next after watching this. It is particularly good for kids who like animals, food and wacky personalities. My favourite part was the way the literary world of magical realism was given a nod to in this film.
Palm Springs (2020)
Northernlion the Youtuber recommended it and I'm glad he did
This movie cheered me up when I was feeling blue. What more can you ask for out of a romcom with a modern twist? Loved Andy Samberg in it found it a perfect place to project my frustrated young male psyche into. Laughed and relaxed, would recommend.
Aliens (1986)
I freaking love Sigourney
The film was tense, gripping and a thrill sci-fi ride throughout. The score helps solidify this as one of my most memorable sci fi films of all time. Hats off to the special effects team as well. Definitely recommend.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
Incredible anthology, feels like a videogame cutscene from your dreams
My favourite ones were the aliens fighting in the arena and the russian zombies one ;)
