Paper Towns (2015)
Reality check!
This movie is not what I expected. I wanted to watch a heart-warming romantic movie as the blues were getting to me and I came across Paper Towns. The title was appealing to me, so I gave it a shot. And, I turned out to love the movie. Being 25 years of age, my idea of love has evolved but most romantic movies always aim at giving high hopes, high thoughts and unrealistic fairytale ideas of love; which is sweet when you are a teenager but as you grow up, trust me, you kind of want a different perspective. Paper Towns is exactly about that. A different perspective on love, on life. It was unpredictable, seriously. Basically, the story starts with Quentin, who's always been in love and fascinated with Margo. As kids they were neighbors and very good friends but as they grew up, the friendship did not really last. They grew apart until one night.. Margo sneaked to Quentin's window and asked him to come help her plot her revenge against some people (im not telling, you better watch the movie man!). Quentin was reluctant at first but then he gave it a shot and they had an all night unforgettable adventure.
However, Margo mysteriously disappeared after that night. She left behind clues that Quentin and his friends unraveled. When they finally found out the last clue about where Margo could possibly be, they set on the journey of a lifetime. When Quentin finally finds Margo, he was anticipating to tell her about his feelings for her. Watch the movie to know what happens next. There is a beautiful message at the end. Perhaps not everyone will like the ending, but I must say that I personally loved it. It is about growing up and making choices and knowing what matters the most to you in the end. Brilliant movie. Go watch it, you won't regret it, i promise!!
Barefoot (2014)
A simple but sweet movie not to be missed
The movie starts off simple (no beating around the bush and stretching the story; it is straight to the point) with Jay (Scott Speedman) who is a janitor in a psychiatric hospital. Jay owes a lot of people money and is actually on probation for the janitor job. He likes to spend some of his time with some of the patients. But the psychiatrist does not approve of this as Jay usually provides them with porn materials and booze. Anyway, one night, he saves Daisy (Evan Rachel Wood), a newly admitted patient in the psychiatric hospital, from getting raped. From that point, Daisy follows Jay as she does not want to stay at the hospital. As the story unfolds, we learn that Daisy has never stepped out of her house her entire life when her mother was alive. She is different and her sense of communication is different as well. Daisy is naive and we even see her lack of awareness of social rules but her character is nevertheless charming and will warm your heart as she is innocent and genuine in her own way. Jay takes Daisy home for his brother's wedding. Things soon get messy as Jay's parents find out about the real identity of Daisy. This movie was heart warming and different. Evan Rachel Wood portrayed the character of Daisy so well. The way she acted confused in pure innocence and the way she responded to the environment around her was amazing. She played her role really well. Loved it!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Mind-Blown!
"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each prayer accepted and each wish resigned." -Alexander Pope
This is a movie I can watch over and over again and never get tired of. It is an original sci-fi love story. The possibility to forget and erase all memories about your past is looked at. So, the movie starts off with Clementine and Joel who were in a rocky relationship since a long time. Clementine, being impulsive, got Joel erased from her memory so when Joel met her, she no longer recognized him to Joel's surprise. Joel looked into the matter and found out that he was erased from Clementine's mind. Angry, he decides to do the same. However, while Joel is in the process of erasing his past, he relives the moments and memories that he and Clementine have shared. He realizes that no matter what, he does not want to forget about his relationship with Clementine. He wants to get out of the procedure but there is no going back.
Now this movie portrays two dysfunctional people in a relationship which appears to be unhealthy since they are constantly fighting. Familiar? Yes, surely one can relate to their relationship fights and issues. We get an insight of what could have happened if painful memories could be forgotten and erased forever. I came to the conclusion that, even if this was possible, feelings would eventually resurface. Like in the movie, both characters felt there was something between them even after forgetting about each other forever. They were like two strangers meeting for the first time but having the "déjà- vu" impression. Strangers yet feeling so comfortable and close to each other. Both Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey did an amazing job. They were so into their respective characters that the movie came out brilliant. Excellent directing as well! It is a movie that will leave you awestruck! Heart-warming, packed with emotions with a little touch of fantasy and yet ending on an unexpected but realistic note. Extraordinary movie! A must-watch
The F Word (2013)
Simple & charming movie
"What if" is a very well written movie. It is a story about Wallace and Chantry, two young people who crossed each other's path, one night. Wallace who is coming out of his shell after being recently heart-broken becomes friends with Chantry who is actually with her long-time boyfriend Ben. As predictable as this might sound, Wallace and Chantry start liking each other & eventually develop feelings for each other. Sounds like a cliché, I know but trust me, you should totally give it a chance! It is such a charming and heart warming film packed with laughs and romance. Being stuck in a love triangle is portrayed from a mature point of view, while still keeping the romantic side of the movie. The cast of the movie was well chosen because everyone played their role so well. Kudos to Daniel Radcliffe for being so natural in his role. Watching this movie will make you realize how versatile of an actor Radcliffe can be. He truly has evolved and matured in his roles. This is not some famous character (Harry Potter) that he plays here. In this movie, we see him as some everyday-life normal guy who is having a bad time. Radcliffe is a great actor. Loved him in this movie! Hats off!
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)
A must-watch movie
I watched this movie 1 month after I went vegan. At first, I went vegan because I wanted to adopt healthier food choices. Cowspiracy is a life-changing movie which made a great impact on me. It is an eye opener explaining why and how the agroindustry is the leading cause of the world's major problems. Animal agriculture contributes to greenhouse gases and is the leading cause of rain forest destruction, poverty etc. Ideally, a plant-based diet is recommended to live a sustainable life. Clearly, this movie encourages veganism and explains why meat and dairy-products are bad for our health and planet. I firmly believe that everyone should watch this movie because it has been so well researched and documented and above all, the director took a logical stand to promote veganism. No barbaric acts from slaughterhouses are shown. The goal here is really to educate people on how consuming meat and dairy products is messing up our ecosystem and how the only way to save the planet is actually by switching to a plant-based diet. It is a movie everyone should watch to know and be conscious of what is going on around you.
Margarita with a Straw (2014)
Loved it.
Great art movie! I don't really watch Indian movies but when it comes to such art movies, it is indeed worth watching. This movie is different and yet entertaining. It teaches us about acceptance of oneself. Basically, the movie started off with a disabled teenager struggling with self-identity and sexuality issues which are very common during the phase of adolescence. The role of Leila, the main character, was so well played and portrayed by the talented Kalki Koelchin. Things become complicated when Leila flies to America to pursue her studies. She explores her sexuality fully. Taboo issues such as homosexuality have been subtly looked at. Finally, while being quite of a heart wrecking movie, it ends on a feel-good note where Leila is finally at peace with herself.
