It Follows (2014)
It Follows REVIEW by @killfillm on Instagram
**VERY MINOR SPOILERS IN LAST PARAGRAPH**
.
IT FOLLOWS .
Written & Directed by David Robert Mitchell .
So horror movies are part of what makes me able to function in everyday life and after 2014 being a not so great year for horror....I needed something bad. If it weren't for Oculus and The Babadook I probably wouldn't have made it to 2015. After all I've heard about this, my expectations were high. Well, It Follows surpassed my already extremely high expectations by a mile.
.
So It Follows is about Jay, a sweet girl who has sex with a guy, and after having sex he reveals what he just got her into. This monster, demon, supernatural force, STD, whatever "IT" is hunts you down and kills you. The only way to get rid of IT is to pass it on by having sex, but you'll never be rid of it. It will just follow down the line and eventually IT will be after you. IT can be anyone anywhere, IT doesn't stop, IT Follows.
.
This is one of the most unique and coolest horror movies I've ever seen. David Mitchell, the directing was pure insanity. Its masterful. Every single shot looks like a beautiful painting. The cinematography in this is straight Eye Porn. The score, probably one of my favorite scores of all time. The musical score in It Follows defined and made the movie. Without it this movie wouldn't have been as great. Maika Monroe was phenomenal and all her teenage friends were too and all really likable. Which is different because usually when there's a group of teens in a horror movie they're 25yr old college jocks and whores who have half a brain and just want to have sex in the Woods. It Follows dodged every cliché and made a very likable group of characters, that actually looked like teenagers, with an incredible story. What I really love about this, although it's a horror, it feels a lot like a terrifying adventure that you're on, but you're just hanging out with these cool people adventuring place to place as they run from IT. It's not the scariest film ever, but it's very suspenseful and thrilling and there were scenes that were completely terrifying.
.
Is it a perfect film? No. The way it is marketed and the way "IT" is in the film, "it doesn't think. It doesn't stop. It doesn't give up." Well, there's a point in the film where they break their own code. "IT" thinks. Without spoiling....the pool scene. Also, the ending was a bit disappointing to me. This may be a bit of a spoiler so if you haven't seen it just skip to the grade at the bottom: the way it ended, I feel like they never really made any progress the entire movie. Like they started at Point A, and by the end, they were still at Point A and I wanted to see them get to Point B. All that said, this was still a very unique horror movie, and its one of the best horrors i've seen in years. If you're not a horror fan, the cinematography and score alone make this worth a watch.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Avengers Age of Ultron REVIEW by @KillFillm on Instagram
**SPOILER FREE** .
AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON .
Directed by Joss Whedon .
Don't worry, if you haven't seen it, you're safe here. No spoilers. I don't believe in spoilers. You can trust me. So opening night I got to see one of my most anticipated movies of the year, in a packed theater, in 3D, with a Monster energy drink to get my heart racing for this spectacle. After the 73% on RottenTomatoes, and everything I've heard.....I tried to keep expectations low.
.
So you guys already know the plot. So short version: Tony Stark creates Ultron for good. For an AI protector of our world. The next step in evolution. Plan backfires...Age of Ultron. After everything I heard, I wasn't expecting it to live up to the first, and I was fine with that. Well it hooked me from the very beginning this time, we start out with the Avengers right in action, IN THE SNOW! Finally got out of New York and had a change of scenery. That's something I've been wanting to see and it was awesome. Throughout the amazing looking action the jokes were there, and I believe this one might be funnier than the first. Especially with a certain joke about 'cursing' that goes on throughout the movie. Its like an Avengers inside joke and every time it gets brought back up its even more hilarious.
.
Now the addition of Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver I was nervous about. Mainly with Quicksilver because I'm not the biggest Aaron Taylor-Johnson fan, and I think he was the sore-point of Godzilla. Now while he doesn't come close to the awesomeness that was Evan Peters's Quicksilver from Days of Future Past, to my surprise I did like him. I really liked Scarlett Witch. Yes, the Russian accents were a bit weird, but only for a moment then you're okay with it. What Scarlett Witch did, how she uses her mind control, and taps into people's minds and we get some psychological traumatic scenes for some of our characters. She was a great addition to this movie. There's more characters in this than any Marvel movie ever, and they are juggled perfectly. That's one of the things I didn't like about the first one. Some characters led the show while others faded into the background. I didn't care a bit for Hawkeye in the first movie cause he got zero character time. In Age of Ultron, I can say Hawkeye was my favorite character in the whole movie and I would say was given the most character time. Not only do we find out more about him, but we learn about his personal life. That's was phenomenal for this movie. It was the perfect blend of Action, Comedy, and Drama. We spent more time with the Avengers OUT of their costumes than ever. My favorite scene in the whole movie was a party at Stark Tower with all them just hanging out and conversating.
.
In closing, YES. Hulk vs Hulk Buster was one of the most beautiful fights I've ever witnessed in a theater. ULTRON, great villain. Menacing, evil, and very funny. He's a likable villain and you just wanna hear him talk cause his voice is awesome and he is awesome. Out of him and Loki, I might like Loki a tad bit better....but just a bit. Vision, I wish he was a surprise and not spoiled in the trailer....but without saying much and avoiding spoil-age, Vision is greatness. Originally Age of Ultron was 3hrs31mins and got shortened to 2hrs22mins, and I feel like we needed some of that. I think Ultron needed more of an origin story because he was just sort of* poof!* I'm hear to destroy. I wished he had more reasoning explained in his origin. My only other gripe is that the Hulk/Black Widow romance felt a bit, rushed and not believable and I just feel it could've been done more natural instead of so sudden and in your face.
.
Now here's the thing, I was actually planning to be hard on this movie. I didn't want my inner fanboyism to effect my grade, so it won't. There were those two things that I feel would've been better in the original 3hr31min cut. Nonetheless, the theater experience was incredible and it was the most fun I had watching a film in theaters in YEARS. It surpassed my expectations by a mile and just completely blew me away. Not only will I say that I liked this one more than the first, but it might just be my favorite Marvel film yet.

Ex Machina (2014)
Ex Machina REVIEW by @KillFillM on Instagram
**LITTLE TO NO SPOILERS** .
EX MACHINA .
Written and Directed Alex Garland .
I got to see this last night and I got to walk into it not having a clue what it's about. Well if you haven't seen it, I wouldn't want to spoil anything because it is best experienced knowing nothing, so in short....a man (Doomhnall Gleeson) wins an opportunity to meet and test an AI created by a drunk genius (Oscar Isaac). .
Ex Machina is Alex Garland's first film and it is so great. Its a very tense film. Subtle tension, that builds throughout the film so much that by the end when any of these characters are even in the same room together it's unsettling. Oscar Isaac is definitely the best part of this film. His character is definitely the best developed, but also really funny and just steals every scene. Alicia Vikander who played Ava, the AI, played a robot phenomenally. Every tiny facial and body movement and the way she talked made a perfect robot...or human...AI thing. Doomhnall Gleeson, I hate to nitpick, but we didn't learn much at all about his character....and the one scene we were told some backstory I think was supposed to be a sad moment were you feel bad for him....but I just didn't. It wasn't much to take away from the movie, because this movie was SOO good. Every "AI session" was so awesome to watch. The finale was completely unpredictable and so amazing. I do think Doomhnall Gleeson's character could've been a little more interesting and have more depth, I.stead of just being this guy in a terrible situation. It also was slow paced at times. As I said I knew nothing about this movie prior, including the runtime. It felt longer than it was, because when I got out the theater I thought it was close to a 3hr movie, but it was actually under two hours. All that said, Ex Machina is still a really great, original and tense sci-fi film and its probably my 2nd favorite this year. .

Halo: Nightfall (2014)
Halo Nightfall REVIEW by @killfillm on Instagram
**NO MAJOR SPOILERS** .
HALO NIGHTFALL .
Directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan .
Technically it's a TV series, but the 5 episodes in total are 93 minutes....and that's basically the length of a movie. .
I wasn't too much a fan of the last Halo film, Forward unto Dawn....when Master Chief got there...it was awesome, but up til' that last 20 minutes....ehh. But I am a Halo fan. I own and have beaten all the games, except ODST...wasn't a fan. Halo Reach is definitely my favorite. Anyways i've been looking forward to a new Halo film so i was very excited to check out Nightfall.
So Nightfall is about a group of ONI troopers led by Locke, going to this ancient abandoned world to solve the mystery of a terrorist attack. Things go wrong, the team gets marooned and they have to survive from the native species.....so, Halo Nightfall was disappointing. It wasn't bad, it had a lot of potential. It was going good for the first 20 minutes, but once they landed on Sedra......though that world looked amazing....it had problems. The characters were predictable, with your rookie girl who ends up being more than people thought of her. Your character who is an asshole just for the sake of having an antagonist within the group. Two people who were mortal enemies but end up sacrificing themself to save the other. It was just nothing new. Then, the whole reason they were there in the first place, to investigate this terrorists attack, yeah they never get around to doing so....so the entire beginning and attack on Earth isn't answered. It is only season 1 so maybe they'll answer that later on. My main problem with this movie, is the villain. When I think of a Halo movie, I want a film that's at least SOMETHING like the game. y'know some good ol' Spartan vs Covenant action. I just wanna see someone go up against the Covenant, the Elites, the Grunts, the Brutes, give me that please. When I found out they're enemy wasn't the Covenant but.....WORMS....I was upset. They're trying to survive from swarms of obvious CGI worms attracted to electricity. The ending, I called 20 minutes in. I didn't care for the characters, and the enemy was just....WORMS. I did enjoy aspects and visually it was cool. There was one really tense scene but overall it was a letdown.

The Book of Eli (2010)
The Book of Eli REVIEW by @KillFillM on Instagram
**LITTLE TO NO SPOILERS**
THE BOOK OF ELI
Directed by The Hughes Brothers .
Another post apocalyptic world where the essentials to live have become scarce, and its made people desperate and violent. Although this is one is one of the more entertaining, unique, and stylish ones I've seen. Eli (Denzel Washington) has the last remaining Bible, and he has been traveling alone for decades in search of a home for it. Carnegie (Gary Oldman) is one of the corrupted men, running a town of maniacal people, and he has been searching for the bible for a long time. .
One of my favorite things about this movie what it has to say on religion and the beliefs of people. Eli is a man of God, and Carnegie is an atheist. Eli wants to bring the bible to a holy place where he can preach the word of God to good people. Carnegie knows the power of the bible. He says that it can control people because it speaks to the weak and the desperate. He's seen it happen before. I always love hearing people's views on religion so I really thought the plot of this was great. .
It feels very much like a Zack Snyder movie in the style it's directed and shot, the slomo's, the very vibrant or very bleak colors. Movies like that are always very visually entertaining and this definitely was. It feels like you're watching a graphic novel on screen, with a mix of Mad Max, western, and Japanese samurai elements. The fight scenes were alright. The choreography was great, but since Denzel did all his own stunts I feel they could've been filmed better and less choppy. Though some action scenes were awesome, especially a shootout at a house and a car chase scene. I really liked Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in this, and though I never particularly like Mila Kunis in movies, I didn't mind her in this and I really liked her character near the end. The finale, a lot is revealed and explained and when it is it makes it so much better. I wasn't expecting to say this going into it, But I can say I loved this movie. Definitely check it out. I think it's very underrated and pretty great. .

There Will Be Blood (2007)
There Will Be Blood REVIEW by @KillFillM on Instagram
**LITTLE TO NO SPOILERS**

THERE WILL BE BLOOD (2007)
.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson .
Saw this for the first time yesterday.......Jesus Christ. .
There Will Be Blood is the story of Daniel Plainview, an Oil Man, and his rise to power. He drills oil, is great at speaking, is far from religious, hates people, loves to succeed, loves to watch others fail, and is incredibly manipulative. .
This is gonna be an odd comparison so bare with me: this felt similar, for me, to Boyhood. Not necessarily the film itself, but the feeling I had watching this was exact to the feeling I had watching Boyhood. I thought with both, this movie is a masterpiece, that I'll probably never watch again. It's nearly 3hrs long and its very noticeable while watching. But when you look at it as a whole, Its absolutely incredible. Daniel Day Lewis is a god of an actor. He, as Daniel Plainview, I think is, or at least one of, the best performances of all time. Paul Dano is extremely creepy in this. Dillon Freasier, who played Daniel Plainview's son, was SO good and his story in this was so heartbreaking. From the head hit his life starts going downhill and when the train scene happens and abandonment happens is when I started to hate Daniel Plainview. Which if your supposed to by the end, and I think you are, the movie made you slowly disagree, then dislike, then truly hate Daniel Plainview by the end and it did a great job at it. Although I did love him in that final bowling alley shot and that confrontation with Eli was perfection. "I am a false prophet and God is a superstition!" I also loved the score so much, and It just gives the feel of the insidious slow turn to crazy. The cinematography was great and especially the scene of the burning oil site was complete eye porn. I knew from the first 15 minutes of no dialogue as Daniel Plainview climbs out that oil well after falling and breaking his leg, that this movie was gonna be great. Overall, Daniel Day Lewis. .
