Into the Wild (2007)
One of those lovely movies without all the usual Hollywood stunts
An amazing story, and well played. I agree with all of the other positive reviews here.
But! There's always a but, isn't there?
I think this movie would have been far better if all the scenes had been presented in chronological order rather than this constant jumping back and forth in time. I know that it's quite popular, but I for one hate it. That's why I can only give it six stars.
The Event (2010)
Really?
So it took 22 episodes to end up with nothing?
A major cliffhanger.
This advanced civilization could barely transport a bus with around 60 people in it, but shortly after that they transported an entire planet with 2 milliard people on it? Into Siberia?.
If they could transport an entire planet, why didn't they do it 66 years earlier? And why didn't they placed their planet in an orbit opposite to the Earth? Wouldn't that have solved all the problems they needed 22 episodes to solve?
How I wish that the US media industry would spend more money on experts and less on fireworks....
Gubben i stugan (1995)
The best documentary ever made?
Well, I don't know it this can be classified as a documentary only.
But I think it must be the best "movie" ever made, no matter how you classify it.
It has everything that the modern movie industry has not.
It has the most wonderful screen shots you can imagine, with some of the world's most amazing scenery.
It has not a single script line spoken (just some occasional radio sound).
Just imagine making a 90 minute film without anyone talking -- just some of the most amazing shots you can thing of.
How much better can a 90 minute flick be?
Just sit back and watch how you are taken from the Big City of Stockholm and gradually via smaller and smaller roads to the little red cottage in the woods. And then, a year later, you'll be taken back to the big city via gradually bigger roads.
If this isn't Oscar material, I don't know what really is...
The Grudge (2004)
Highly recommended!
Now this is really what I think Hollywood should spend all their huge resources on! This is a plot that takes place far away from LA, NYC and Miami, with all the usual stereotypes we usually are fed from there. And that makes all the difference. Not only because of all the Japanese only talk going on, but also because this obviously is a very alien situation, that the movie characters has found themselves in.
In this movie we have a Sarah Michelle Gellar, that has distanced herself from her usual Buffy character, and actually demonstrates that she can act also as not being a Vampire Slayer.
The scares are, if not all too original, enough to make you choke on your midnight drink, and I don't think you should watch this movie alone.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
What a waste of a really exciting idea
If you enjoy watching a two hour long trailer for an upcoming attraction, this is the movie for you. Like in a trailer, there's absolutely no logic, thought or attempt to explain any of the scenes, just an endless sequence of action scenes.
If you, on the other hand, want some comedy on the Mr & Mrs Secret Agent theme, go rent Undercover Blues or True Lies.
What a waste of resources this was. The basic idea is great, but I think the producers should have left out a big load of ammo and spent the then saved money on at least having someone proof read the script. Somehow I get the feeling I'd rather read the book, then at least I could expect to get all of the logical flaws of the story explained -- but unfortunately there is no such book.
This is truly Hollywood at it's worst, with absolutely no respect for the movie audience, only for their dollar bills. But then again, reading some of the comments here, maybe the average movie public is just as easily seduced as the industry thinks it is...?
