Life on Our Planet (2023)
This is for ILM
Back in the 90s, Tim Haines approached ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), the company responsible for the JP VFX, to make the dinosaurs from what is today known as the docuseries Walking With Dinosaurs (1999). They refused for a reasonable reason, CGI were time taken and too expensive.
Three decades later, tho, ILM brought the pre-historic creatures alive in Life on Our Planet, and I'm so happy for this! The animals look great, don't know why ppl complain so hard on them. Of course, quality constancy varies, there are inaccuracies, and it even seems they reused some models from the JW franchise. But overall, I was plenty satisfied, and we had some genuine great moments.
It's a pity the script and montage don't follow, they're both mediocre, dumb, and the marketing really misled us of what to expect from this docuseries. The imagery of the present is surely beautiful, but besides the analogy, they don't fit the pacing and themes of the storytelling properly. The back and forth was awful, I was so aghast that from ep 5 onward I was just skipping to the prehistoric scenes. Well, I'm high-key disappointed, it could have a good improvement if the series had fewer episodes and length, and could be a masterpiece if it had a clever script.
I'll give it an 6 for ILM and all the animators involved.
Moby: Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (Reprise Version) (2021)
Where are we heading to?
I'm so glad that Moby and Steve Cutts could combine their forces and ideas to bring up this masterpiece, especially 'cause thematically their works are quite similar. It keeps the same depressing vibe from their previous work for the purpose of one mission: alert us of where we're heading to and for what cost? It also seemed to be slightly more positive than most of Steve's and Moby's past works, because yes, we need to be more optimistic and act for a better future.
The vocals are superb, and Moby's music does never fail to touch us, and Steve's art ranges from sth minimalistic to sth realistic full of details and shadows, the man simply nails the principle of contrast.
Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure (2022)
It's back! Its roots are different though.
They're back! But there are things you need to know.
1st - the scale of the series has grown. Now they are in an adventure park with a linear plot to follow, which implies that it's more like an adventure story than a slice of life.
2nd - There are more side characters, and each one of them have an important role to play.
3rd - Sometimes the animation gets more stylish and experimental, which I loved, and I wish there were more of it.
I'm super glad they attempted to do sth different instead of copying its predecessor success, but it saddens me a bit that I couldn't feel that intimate and heartwarming feeling we once had with those few main characters inside a house. That animation communicated so well with kids and adults (I will never forget the snowmen episode), but here in general it's more childish.
With 2 or 3 exceptions, I couldn't get along with the side characters (they took too much time screen as well), and although the animation is still good, we can really see how complicated it was to animate all those peoples and elements in the park, which resulted in a some lifeless static scenes.
In conclusion, is it that show that in its 12 minutes created that cozy place and made us believe in the humanity again? No, but it's definitely a must-watch, especially if you were looking forward to watching more of these cute teddy bears, 'cause they will make you smile from ear to ear along these 8 episodes (although I think they could have been told in only 1 or 2).
Dinosauria (2021)
The biggest Tribute for an old age
When 3D meets 2D in a correct way, then we have visual masterpieces like that, but when great art finds great narrative, then it becomes meaningful, in some cases unforgettable, and that's what you have made with the Dinosauria Series, David.
We have the perfect amount of speculations, the art is really stylish, which elevates the quality of the 3D models, and Dinosaurs are portrayed as real animals. 2022 has been a great year for paleo media, and this short series is one of its highlights! I'm impressed.
I couldn't be gladder for the fact Dinosauria isn't an isolated short movie, but a whole series, 'cause the more I watched it, I realized Dinosauria is a unique universe that could only be brought by David's mind. And it's so alive, beautiful, cruel at times. It's a must-watch if you are a life appreciator, or a fan of art and animation. But if you like dinosaurs, it'll be unforgivable not watching this.
