Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Fun And Enjoyable
I considered giving this ten stars to help boost the low ratings, but decided to go with what it deserves. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (PPZ) is a fun film with good action and worth your time if you like to think out of the box.
Seth Grahame-Smith's novel is an unusual mash-up of Jane Austen's original and the current obsession with the undead. When I read the novel, I thought it was amusing and original in its way, but it was a one-joke premise and quickly grew boring. The premise works better on film. PPZ (the film) has enough action and humor to keep one interested throughout.
A couple things make this worth watching: Matt Smith's performance, which is hilarious and quite different from his Dr. Who persona, and shows his versatility; and How well they capture how society would change with a zombie outbreak in the early nineteenth century.
The film wasn't perfect. For example, one thing that irked me was how Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bennet was thought to be plain, especially compared to her sister Jane, yet Lily James, who played the character is very attractive. That's typical of Hollywood casting, however, and if you can get past that, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is quite good.
Immortally Yours (2009)
Vampires, Illuminati, Cops, and Bad Acting
A film such as this could only come out on DVD. The studio probably realized how bad it was and decided that it would crash and burn if it was released in the theaters.
While some of the cast have been in decent films, most of the cast are wooden or sounding like they're reading cue cards. Most of the dialogue sounds amateurish and fake.
The plot seems to be a composite of a few story ideas, with the hopes of making something stick (a cop story, a vampire romance, a conspiracy involving the poor man's version of the Illuminati. Unfortunately, none of it works.
The main vampire, Alex, is boring, as is his love interest, Estelle. Since they can't act, it's not a big deal. Neither can the cops, or anyone else.
Finally, when the closing credits are playing, the theme song, "Immortally Yours", is like ice picks to one's eardrums.
Save your money and avoid this turkey.
Happily N'Ever After (2006)
Disappointing
While this had some good points, there were many weaknesses. The characters didn't always fit their voices and the animation was pretty weak. Freddie Prinze, Jr.'s character, Rick, looked like Justin Timberlake, for some unknown reason. Characters walked as if they were automatons, not with the fluidity of humans. And Sarah Michell Gellar, while I'm a big fan of hers from her Buffy days, seemed bored the whole time. In fact, her (Cinder)Ella spoke with the same stilted simplicity as the robot Buffy from Season Five of the series. The monumental talents of George Carlin were wasted in such a small role. The whole thing seemed as if it were a rushed rip-off of Shrek and Hoodwinked.
