L'uomo che comprò la luna (2018)
Charming fairy tale magical realism
Charming fairy tale with magical realism touches. There's a wry, sardonic perspective on geopolitics, just what we need right now. I won't give away the "plot" - too convoluted and bizarre to really explain. Just watch it unfold before you, and smile and smile.
West of Redemption (2015)
Brooding, atmospheric mystery/thriller set in Eastern Washington
This modest but powerful film explores the intricacies and ramifications of relationships, in particular a complicated triangle of three individuals, set in the bleak farmland of Eastern Washington. It's as if Ingmar Bergman met Hud.
The performances of the protagonists will be enough to captivate you, but the unfolding of the "backstory" will enthrall you.
The cinematography is breathtaking, with subtlety of color and variation in camera angles keeping the viewer a bit off balance.
The setting is in fact a character in the film. The place begins to affect you in clever ways.
